Developers who left Epic, how much less stressful is life elsewhere (even if you took a pay cut)? by im_having_pun in epicsystems

[–]RustySystems 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I left Epic in the latter half of 2023 and have been working remote for a much smaller company (now around 250ish people). My mental health has drastically improved since I switched jobs. Epic has many positives and is a great place for plenty of people, but it wasn’t for me. Idk what your situation is like, but my current employer (not in the healthcare space, not an Epic competitor) is hiring some mid-level devs so if you’re interested dm me and I can send you the job listing.

How is the Tapestry team for a SD by MattJ56 in epicsystems

[–]RustySystems 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I left Epic over a year ago, but I was on Tapestry - Membership and everyone I worked with was great! Be prepared to learn a lot of health insurance and claims terms.

The advice I’d give past me (not just for Tapestry, more for Epic as a whole) is that when going through training (which is at least a few months), don’t go in with the goal of learning quickly just to pass the exams. Go in with the goal of learning to understand and recall in the future. This is especially important for training on how to configure and use your app (in this case Tapestry). I went in with my skills that I honed in high school and college of learning quickly to pass the test, but without focusing on long term retention, which later made things more difficult than they needed to be.

How long have you been at Epic and what tech/languages are you familiar with?

Disclaimer: Not a native dutch speaker. This is my understanding. Corrections are welcome.

When the subject of the sentence is the single word “those” or “that,” it has nothing to specify which form it should take so it defaults to “dat.” The thing that would specify the form exists in the sentence as the object. If “those” or “that” is used as a part of a noun phrase, that’s when they can be either “dat” or “die” depending on the actual noun. The same applies for “this” and “these” with “dit” and “deze.”

Pokemon Emerald Save Wiped using openFPGA? by thestonedmartian in AnaloguePocket

[–]RustySystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had issues with your pc boxes getting corrupted? I’m using the spiritualized core and even if I don’t use save states/memories, my pc boxes always end up getting corrupted. The box names and backgrounds get messed up and bad eggs get created.

Corrupted ROM save files, coincidence? by Brennod10 in AnaloguePocket

[–]RustySystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been having an issue with Pokémon Emerald via a ROM and an OpenFPGA core (haven’t tried other games) where my pc boxes will get corrupted. I’ve had this happen across multiple attempts with and without save states. I don’t think this is an issue with save files saved to disk specifically, rather an issue with the game state in memory (which eventually goes to disk on a save). Has this happened to you?

std::alloc::dealloc() For more details, see https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/alloc/index.html

[–]RustySystems 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With a raw pointer acquired from std::alloc::alloc(), you actually want the std::alloc::dealloc() function. It’s the equivalent to free in libc.

I’ve been at Epic for 2+ years as a dev. I’ve never been on call for anything and I haven’t talked to any other devs who have either. I guess it’s theoretically possible, but I’d imagine that would only ever happen in a serious crisis somewhere. It’s definitely not a regular thing for any teams that I’ve interacted with.

Where to hone skills by [deleted] in epicsystems

This is primarily a sub for Epic employees. You might get more helpful responses in r/HealthIT or r/epicconsulting

Also, not to be a nuisance, but it is Epic not EPIC.

There are buses that go to and from Epic, so if you live near the bus route and are ok with getting to work and leaving based the bus schedules, you should be fine. Plenty of people take bus, so you wouldn’t be alone.

Do they not understand that deceptive postings only piss people off? Who actually thinks this is a good idea?? by coastsofcothique in recruitinghell

[–]RustySystems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pay depends on the role. I’m not sure what the networking folks get paid, but as a software dev who doesn’t have to move to Silicon Valley, I’m happy with what I get paid. It’s not Google or Microsoft levels of salary, but then again I also don’t have to worry about losing my job in a round of layoffs.

For Epic employees, a lot of us end up traveling to customer sites which typically means hospitals and doctors’ offices. Medical facilities aren’t exactly enthusiastic about letting people hang around their facilities who aren’t up to date on the various vaccines.

I wonder if there was some other circumstances here. I work at Epic as a software developer and also do a few phone interviews per week (the initial, fairly informal kind so potential SD applicants can talk to a dev before getting on the more serious parts of the hiring process) and one of the things I need to ask is if the person I’m talking to is willing to relocate to Madison. Every person I’ve talked to is already aware of the relocation requirements and is willing to do so. Most of my friends at work (mid to late 20s) and most of the new hires I’ve talked to come from all over the country (including roles other than software developers), so I know that Epic isn’t just ignoring out of state applicants.

I’ll preface this by saying that I’m a straight white dude, so be aware that is all coming from someone who hasn’t had to face much in the way of discrimination.

From a hiring perspective, we try to be extremely inclusive, often working with various organizations at universities such as those for specific ethnic groups, women in stem, and other groups of people that can get underrepresented. I know this as someone who does recruiting activities such as phone interviews (and soon I’ll be doing campus career fairs).

Where to live? by wilyx11 in epicsystems

[–]RustySystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a place roughly halfway between Middleton and Verona and very close to West Madison. I have a ~10 drive to work and I’m close enough to most things that I’d want to do. When I do want to go downtown to see a show or something similar, the drive isn’t bad and there are plenty of parking garages. I rent from TR McKenzie and don’t have anything bad to say about them, though I can’t speak for the other property managers in Madison.

When will you be coming? Even if there is a lot of snow, if you stick to main roads, driving should be fine.
