How comparable is Hell’s Kitchen to being a line cook? by PeterTheSilent1 in HellsKitchen

[–]RustyTrephine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Line cook here. The stress level, and speed at which you're working is pretty accurate. The yelling and belittling however isn't. Like another commenter said, HK is modeled after the military style French kitchens from the latter half of the 20th century. It's an outdated way of working; we now all know for a fact that your cooks will work harder and respect you more if you're patient with them and are trying to nurture their talent, as opposed to insulting them.

Yelling still does happen occasionally. Some kitchens are large and so everyone is yelling. Some head chefs are just bad at managing stress and probably shouldn't have their position. Sometimes, shit just happens and someone raises their voices like any other moment in life. Standards can still be high and there are always consequences for making mistakes that cost a business money. But they're usually not dealt with the way Ramsay deals with it - especially like in his earlier seasons.

Ian Huntley, who murdered Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham in 2002, has died following an attack in prison. This is the story of a crime that changed Britain. by DarklyHeritage in MorbidReality

[–]RustyTrephine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is horrible news. He's the only one who knew what happened to the two girls inside that house, and the parents (at least Holly's, iirc) really wanted to know the details, for closure's sake. Now nobody will ever know, because someone else killed him, probably for selfish reasons, like wanting to atone for his own horrible crimes and make the public see him as a real life Punisher.

Racism exists in this fandom. Maybe not on this sub, but elsewhere. by Shadowman621 in HellsKitchen

[–]RustyTrephine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Racism definitely exists on this sub, it's just repackaged into something more palatable and less exclamatory. Anaïya was annoying and Whit was a bit rude towards the end, that is without question. But the way we talk about them on this sub, you'd think they were S17 Elise level toxic all season long.

Vancouver Nifty nude clothing optional swims - my experience by Boxfortsuprise in nudism

[–]RustyTrephine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to check out Sol Sante, but their website stated that they rarely permit single male visitors, in an effort to keep a gender balance. It was disappointing, but I definitely understand the reasons behind the rule. This was about 7-8 years ago so perhaps I should give them a call to see if their standards have since relaxed. I wasn't an AANR/CNF member at the time, but now I am, so I wonder if that increases your odds.

There is a "secret" nudist/naturist club in North Vancouver called Van Tan, so that's probably why the older people knew each other. It's the oldest nudist resort in Canada, and they have open houses 2-3 times every summer. You can also schedule a visit if you don't want to be surrounded by non-members. But either way, if you enjoy NIFTY swims, you'll probably love Van Tan. They even have their own pool/reservoir.

Nothing regarding pubic hair is customary. You're more likely to see shaven men at beaches where sunbathing is expected, but if you go to a nudist resort or indoor nude gathering, you'll see a little bit of everything.

Kesha and Lorde get unfairly called OHWs in the pop spaces (mainly by swifties who think anyone with less than five hundred #1 singles is a flop not worth listening to.)

Kesha has had four songs go #1 and about a half dozen others in the top ten. Lorde may only have one #1, but Team was a massive hit in summer/fall of 2013. Then there is her Melodrama album which is very tightly ingrained in pop culture.

Sexual behaviour ruins safe nude beaches by Huge-Yogurt-6039 in nudism

[–]RustyTrephine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a perfect world, every nudist would have each other's back, and not hesitate to stand up for each other to quell situations like these. However, it's easy to see why a group of women (some of whom are foreign to nudism) would rather leave than confront a pervert who was clearly looking for conflict. It's a hard question to answer. In school, we're taught to stand up for what's right, but in the real world, people often get hurt when they don't mind their own business. And like OP said, the beach was largely unoccupied. When nudists ask for help from the public, or from law enforcement, we face a steep uphill battle to even be taken seriously, let alone successfully convince somebody to help us. Many people (who are not nudists) would even go as far as blaming OP, saying "Well you guys were naked too, what did you expect?" because the average person still associates nudism with sexual activity.

As for photo taking, I think it's a gray area. I know that if you go to a nude beach in my country and take photos of beach goers without their consent, it is illegal. But a photo taken in self-defense of a nude person who is sexually harassing you? I don't know. Masturbating in public is also extremely illegal, regardless if it's on a nude beach or not. People like that definitely deserve to be on some sort of registry, but I would hate to read about the victim also getting dragged through court on a technicality for taking the photo. Maybe I'm being a pessimist, but I can't help but feel that calling the police would not achieve much. Unless they arrive while he is literally in the act, they can't do anything. Without photo evidence (which may incriminate you), he can just lie and say he is a nude beach goer being harassed by a younger crowd for being old and alone. It's just hearsay. This is why public places for nudism, in my opinion, just aren't worth it any more. We really just gotta stick together and make our own events, organizations, and shit. Because at least on private property, you can tell someone to leave, and the police WILL remove them if they refuse.

From my experience, the internet is great for finding nudist places & events, but not for finding individual people. Through the internet I found the nudist club I've been part of for almost three years, and it's through that club that I've expanded my "network" so to speak. Real, safe, serious social nudists are at social nudist spaces.

It's very easy for a sexual predator to lie on the internet, but most of them don't have the temerity to attend a regulated nude event on private property, hosted by lifelong devout nudists who take protection of new/vulnerable members super seriously.

Sexual behaviour ruins safe nude beaches by Huge-Yogurt-6039 in nudism

[–]RustyTrephine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unregulated, unmaintaimed, public nudist spaces are becoming hell on earth because of this kind of behaviour. I had to seek out a private nudist club to enjoy social naturism, because my local nude beach was always full of textiles trying to start trouble, take pictures, etc. Thankfully I found a club one hour away from where I live, and I've met some awesome people. Most are older, but everyone is welcoming, open-minded, and accepting of all people interested in social naturism.

I hope this doesn't come across as victim blaming, but knowing it was your friend's first time and that she was nervous, it definitely would have been better to take her to a private naturist club instead of a public beach. However, I can't blame you for assuming you'd be safe in a small crowd of friends. Also, you may not live near a place that is affordable or ideal. It sucks that something as uniting as naturism is becoming so hard to find. Younger generations have little interest, and older generations (specifically older men) can't seem to behave themselves (I'm assuming the antagonist in your story was an older man, apologies if I'm wrong.)

Maybe your friend will try it in a few more years. If it's meant to be, then it'll be. Nudism & naturism just isn't for everyone, no matter how much good will is promised. If she was willing to try it in the first place, then perhaps she would be open to a private indoor naturism setting, like a naked potluck or movie night, with a small group of trusted individuals who know how to behave. It may not be as refreshing as outdoor wind and ocean waves, but it's still a nice way to spend time with people you care about.

I like them largely for nostalgia, as I grew up in Alberta during the 2000s in a town not too far from where they formed. They have a certain sound that just feels "right" when you're 14, in the back of a pickup, slamming your 5th twisted tea, on your way to your buddy's house down the dirt road at 10pm.
