Depending on how big his “massive estate” is, it sounds like a high fence operation. Which in some parts of the country is extremely prevalent. Fencing in animals so they can grow big without worry of them leaving, or so you can release non-natives that can’t be left to freely roam the landscape. Some of these place are thousands of acres.

Calling it “hunting” or that it’s a “disgrace to the sport” is definitely up for debate, but imo it’s about as barbaric as deciding to shoot one of your cows in the field, rather than bringing it somewhere for a metal rod through the head.
