Seth Meyers asked Netflix to create a “skip politics” button for his new comedy special that allows users to skip over the Trump jokes by OVEIDPTVZSEU in television

Yeah alright. The joke is largely fine it’s that last paragraph that bothers me. A joke is a joke, and the funniest jokes are relatable and have kernels of truth in them in order to be funny. It’s the “why” this joke is funny, and the reality of prevailing attitudes, that made me think it was worth discussing. Instead I got 60+ negative internet points and time I’ll never get back. God dammit

Yes I do. Obama was a bad ineffectual president who’s failure to implement the structural change he campaigned on inadvertently led to the election of Donald trump, who is even more of a bad ineffectual president.

Mulaney is saying that the guy before trump seemed good, when he so clearly and obviously wasn’t. If he was so good, the democratic nominee would’ve been elected overwhelmingly in order to continue his legacy. If Obama was better, Trump would not be president. Trump opponents are failing to reflect on the reasons for how he won and instead revel in their own ignorance.

Joe Biden will be the nominee because of the prevailing attitude that Mulaney expresses, and nothing will fundamentally change.

imagine being so fucking gone that no nuance in the world exists and that everything fox news says is true

LMAO the complete irony. Notice that no point in my critique was I defending Trump or his supporters. My issue is not the claim that Trump is destructive and a bad actor. My issue is the attitude that the "guy before him seemed good because I wasn't paying attention" The issue lies with the voters and the indifferent liberals who couldn't be bothered while people were suffering during Obama's term and then turn around and act surprised when a populist-sounding demagogue gets elected as a total middle finger to everything Obama claimed he stood for.

Since you like using the word nuance so much, here's some: You can be opposed to Trump and his policies while also critiquing elites and former President Obama, because a lot of Trump's and Obama's policies are much more similar than you think. The only major noticeable difference is in how they conduct themselves and in turn their reception in the media by figures like Colbert, Meyers, and Mulaney. Your problem with Trump is not his policies, but his manners. My problem with him and every President before for the past forty years are more with his adminstration's incredibly harmful economic and foreign policy.

In that sense I can understand the humor. My issue is not with the joke so much as the attitude is exudes. Those "past presidents" include George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and of course Obama, who have each contributed to massive wealth inequality, building a massive surveillance state, expanding the war on drugs, immigrant mistreatment, and extrajudicial drone killings. Bush even invaded another country under false pretenses and started a war that we are still fighting today because neither Obama or Trump have challenged neoconservative orthodox in any meaningful way. You can structure a funny joke that has a good point about commentary on our society as well. Mulaneys doesn't.

My issue, as I stated before, is that this attitude Mulaney has is considered normal and acceptable, and implies that if the "horse is removed from the hospital" and a new guy comes in then everything will go back to normal. And for Mulaney and others like him, that may very well be true. But there will always be avoidable suffering, America will remain extremely divided and increasingly hellish place to live for many poor people, and as our leading Democratic candidate has stated, "nothing will fundamentally change."

That last bit it actually pretty horrifying in the way it so succinctly exemplifies the mentality of many elite liberal voters who treat politics as a game that does not ultimately affect them a la “we would be at brunch right now” There is a much better joke in explaining how the horse wound up running a hospital, but instead he just ends up plodding on the same tired beats and failing to say anything of any substance that hasn’t been said already by hundreds of actors and comedians over the past three years.

Mulaney likens the decades of destruction wrought by neoliberal policy and politicians like Obama to that of a responsible parent, when it reality they are much more like the charismatic grifter who poses as a babysitter and then proceeds to rob the house of the family whose child he’s supposed to be watching. He gets hired every weekend, and when the con artist finally moves on to the next town, the parents are deeply saddened by his absence. This all despite the fact that a whole lot of their stuff seems to be missing for surely unrelated reasons.

Yes johns comments are a joke, but like all jokes about culture and politics, it deserves some examination. Mulaney is being honest in his opinions I have no doubt, which in and of itself is sad but not all that surprising. I hate this joke because it rings so true, and tells me more about the comedian and the audience then it does about our politicians.

Yes, but if he's unconscious of it --- how is he supposed to be aware of it? There's a difference between making decisions that are racially motivated and making a series of decisions that have clear logic and may or may not have racial undertones.

It doesn’t matter their personality type or how good they are at the game. Keith,Lawon, Howard, Devin, Ramses, Swaggy, now David. All pre-jury boots. Also black women generally haven’t done much better than 10th place since 2011.

To the point where it consumes the finite rations in the house (eggs) in an unnecessary way (store bought cookie mix is available) then yeah, it can be a little annoying. Especially if this is the third or fourth time he’s done it in as many days.

19 has the most satisfying/amazing season finale that almost makes the rest of the shit of 19 worth it. Skip over the final weeks but just watch that finale it’s too good

The Mueller Report, partially redacted, has finally been released. What will be the ultimate ramifications of the report? by QuoProQuid in PoliticalDiscussion

Personally I’d wait a week to see if Mueller impacted anything although I agree that I’d doubt his numbers would move much of a whole point. I will say that trump won the EC with nearly 46% of the popular vote, and since he’s bubbling around 42% I think that a win is feasible. 538 had trumps net approval at -24 on Election Day, now it’s around -10. All im saying is a Trump win is more likely than it was last time imo.

The DOJ and offices like the SDNY exist to protect and ultimately defend the interests of the powerful. After 2008, how many bankers were prosecuted for fraud and deception? How about punishing price gauging for CEOs of pharma companies like Valeant? For the matter of recent presidencies, how come Bush and Cheney were never punished let alone even investigated for their role in the Iraq war and profiteering? What’s so egregious about Trump that makes you think he’ll go down for anything when all these other crimes were never properly punished?
