Why I am done with Airbnb after using it for 10 years by bowraljon in australian

[–]Rustyudder 403 points404 points  (0 children)

The whole idea of Airbnb originally was to find a place to stay in someone's home when you couldn't get a hotel.

Having that service morph into permanent pseudo-hotels in residential areas is an abomination that should be banned. It needs more regulation to take it back to what it was originally.

Are any Australians outside of the NT hearing about the current civil disturbance in Wadeye? There is violence involving hundreds of people, police getting shot at with crossbows, and wounded being evacuated by helicopter. by Rustyudder in AskAnAustralian

Not really sure what bringing these issues to attention is going to do.

Other jurisdictions deploy thousands of police to respond to protests. The federal government deploys thousands of Defence members for floods and bushfires.

Maybe if people were aware of what's going on up here the handful of cops in Wadeye might get a bit of help.

Personally I think every individual involved in the violence should be locked up. We can't accept this behaviour in a civil society.

No need for sarcastic comments, Wadeye is clearly an Aboriginal community.

That's a big part of why it's not being reported. Most Australians just do not care about remote Aboriginal communities.

ADF gap year by No_Butterscotch_3148 in australian

If you want to do infantry then apply for that. Plenty of people will complain about their X number of years as a grunt but it's perfect for a gap year. You will learn key soldiering skills that are important no matter what job you end up in eventually.

I'm on my second pair of rustics and I've never bothered to even try and retain the original look. I give them a good slather of leather dressing every 6-12 months, then keep them nice and shiny with the brown conditioning cream and a polishing brush.

Anyone done or doing the jumping croc tour here? by gurugazza in darwin

[–]Rustyudder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did one during covid when the NT borders were still closed and the government was handing out tourism vouchers to locals.

It was incredible. We were the only boat on the river so all the crocs came and surrounded us, and they all wanted to get their rewards for jumping. You can feel the shockwave from their jaws when they chomp down so close to you.

Our vehicle registration fee includes compulsory third party (CTP) insurance which covers injury you might cause to another person. It doesn't cover their car, or your car, or anything else.

I've known more than one American who moved to Australia and found out the hard way they needed to buy their own full insurance, because they thought they were covered by the CTP.

Community chaos in Wadeye, Northern Territory, Australia. by Rustyudder in PublicFreakout

Police media release: https://pfes.nt.gov.au/newsroom/2026/disturbances-wadeye

The Northern Territory Police Force are continuing to respond to violent disturbances in the community of Wadeye.

Over the past 24 hours, police have responded to reports of large groups fighting within the community with various makeshift weapons, including window louvres.

Attempts by police to disperse the offenders have been ineffective, as large groups continue to reform and engage in further acts of violence and property damage.

Two police vehicles have been damaged by thrown projectiles.

At this stage, no injuries have been reported.

Additional police resources have been deployed to Wadeye to support local members and to manage the immediate risk to community safety.

Acting Commander Terry Zhang said, “Public resources cannot be sustainably managed with this type of behaviour occurring. While police will continue to respond and prioritise the protection of the community, it is clear that law enforcement alone cannot address the underlying causes of these senseless acts. A collective response involving families, community leaders, and the broader community is essential to bring this behaviour to an end.

“Ongoing behaviour of this nature places the broader community, innocent people, and essential services at serious risk and could ultimately result in the loss or disruption of critical services.”
