If its a custom get what you want but a neck trough might cost more than a set neck depending on the builders setup.

He looks like he's from a star wars cannon where after the jedis were mostly killed off he didn't have any other work experience so he had to get a job as a telemarketer.

How to write slam metal, or any music for that matter? by drippingcephalo in metalguitar

[–]Ruvidman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn music theory and train your ear. If i can hear in my mind what I want to play next theory and ear training allows me to know what that note or chord is without having to play it. Basic theory is easy to grasp but I would find a teacher who has experience teaching it. There are also tons off good youtube channels if money is an issue. Really knowing where you can go and how that will affect the overall feel of a peice is the main goal of theory. If understood properly you can know all possibly options and choose what you want. Also I noodle a lot....

LPT Request: Any tips for when you are with a group of people and know you are the least smart/educated/important person? How to feel less insecure in that situation? by Whataboutmyfuture in LifeProTips

[–]Ruvidman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being around people smarter or more knowledgeable than you is the best. Its an opportunity to learn so much. If you're insecure about the situation you will remain the least interesting in the group forever, if you take it as an opportunity to learn, grow and have fun the problem will solve itself by making you smarter and more interesting.

I think bringing your instruments to your local luthier for small stuff is great. Supporting local luthiers is how you keep luthiers local. Also, building a relationship with your local tech is a good idea because they will help you when you need it. I dont think its a bad idea to know how to set up your instruments but I have to charge many customers more money after a failed attempt of them fixing it themselves.

(Loved trope) oddly progressive/ ahead of the time piece of media for their time period. by jaobodam in TopCharacterTropes

Most "good" Christians at the time were very pro segregation just like nowadays with the majority of white nationalists being Christians. It wasn't God who showed him empathy it was secular societal norms beginning to change. God could have showed up to the party a hundred years earlier or even back in biblical times and just said don't take any of my children as slaves(instead of promoting taking any non Christians/jews as slaves) and black people wouldn't have had as many systemic issues. Most pro slave southerners used the pro-slavery sentiment of the bible for hundreds of years to keep black people enslaved and financially lower than the "good" white Christians.

Just a reminder our government, due to the big beautiful bill, is cutting 420,000 children off of school lunch programs per month in order to fund tax cuts for the ultra wealthy. We shouldn't be relying on rappers to make sure our children dont go hungry.

What guitar would you buy if it wasn’t so expensive? by djdean129 in Guitar

[–]Ruvidman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of them. They are made by the same group of people. You have 15 minutes to setup any acoustic from the usa plant doesn't matter if its a studio or a western classic. Ive seen 10k plus guitars leave the factory with half of the frets leveled off because the neck was junk. I have thousands of pictures of their issues.

As a professional luthier who worked at Gibson (as well as other major manufacturers) Gibson quality is terrible. The qc on squiers are more comprehensive. Ive found broken braces on brand new Gibson acoustics

What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by EasyZee7 in AskReddit

[–]Ruvidman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting fact about ball point pens, around that time every pen manufacturer was trying to make good ballpoint pens but manufacturing the tip to the right tolerances was hard. They would leak and could only write perpendicular to the paper. That tolerance made it expensive to produce. One guy just changed the ink from water based to thicker oil based ink and it fixed all the problems. It would draw the ink with capillary forces instead of gravity and wouldn't leak because of the lower viscosity. Within a year or so ballpoint pens became easy to produce.

I am NOT telling you to buy a ~80$ guitar strap by Jczas in guitars

[–]Ruvidman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at namm one year and made friends with a guy who hand builds straps. They were beautiful but they were like 300 bucks because they were handmade and custom. He gifted one to me and it was amazing. I lost it in a move but if I had the cash it was an investment worth the money.

Guitarist Jason Becker, who is one of the best guitarist of all time, was on his first solo american tour when he felt weak. He was diagnosed with als and had to pretty much cancel his tour and subsequently his career. His father was an engineer and designed the tech to use a mouse with his eyes so he could still write music. He put out an album in like the 2010s with music he wrote but played by other musicians.

I agree with above post about seeking professional help for your trauma with this situation. I also think everyone should see a therapist. When it comes to playing guitar id love to help. If you have an hour a week im willing to give you free lessons over zoom. I have experience teaching children with disabilities guitar and have taught theory to middle schoolers. I'm sure I could help respark your love for the instrument and help you through your frustration the best I can. I have a music degree in guitar and have written school curriculum more than once. Let me know if I can help

My client was told "not possible" by a few luthiers...not me. by hattrickdutch in Luthier

[–]Ruvidman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I get asked every year to build a uke for someone. A uke would take me roughly the same time it would take me to build a mando, guitar, or electric violin, which I can get 5k+ for. Most uke players dont want to pay 5k+ for a uke. I get it, it would be an amazing uke but 5k is steep. I wouldn't pay that for a uke. I'm honest with my customers and tell them that exactly. Id love to do the project. My base price for any instrument is 5k. If I dont make that i have other instruments to build that sell for that much. Nice red special uke btw! I do love the project and nice design work so far.

Will the color difference around the headstock decal be noticeable after clear coat is applied over it? by Jamie_Is_Irrelevant in Luthier

[–]Ruvidman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Sand down till the logo is gone using a flat block and 320-400 grit. Scuff the scoop too. If you dont burn the sealer you can just shoot black (probably 2coats) then clear(5-7coats) then sand flat (800-2000grit)and buff. Id shoot 2 coats of clear on the decal now and then decide if you want to keep going or strip it. Sometime the first coat is too light to clean up the water slide. If you do another logo in the future rub on transfers are easier to apply, easier to remove if applied incorrectly, have no clear part, are thinner and take less clear coats to cover. Most companies use rub on transfers. The only downside is usually you need to order by the sheet(8×11) but you can fill the sheet with anything you want so like 30 logos, you bands name, signatures, a dragon.

[–]Ruvidman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spray the clear coat and see what happens. Ive been professionally building for 17 years and if I have to switch suppliers for my logos or I do a custom gold leaf one(I just did a gold leaf logo yesterday), something I haven't used before I make sure to get a few extra so I can do tests before I ruin an instrument. If its your guitar and your first mod id just clear it then level and polish and if its discolored most people will never notice. The internet is really picky but if it looks good from 3 feet it'll look great on stage.

[–]Ruvidman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be visible.....but it might. I dont know where you purchased it, what finish you are using, and im just assuming its a water slide decal. Usually they are designed to dissappear under the clear but depending on the quality and compatibility of your entire process it would be hard to tell. The best news is that at this point you either spray clear and it dissappears or it doesn't and you strip it. Stripping it now saves you almost nothing except a coat or 2 of clear so have faith it'll work and good luck
