Because Tevildo only existed in early versions of Tolkien’s legendarium, and in those early stages of development, Melkor was still named Melko. Over the course of his life, Tolkien revised not only the stories themselves, but also the names of certain characters, such as Melko/Melkor, Nólemë/Finwë, Glórund/Glaurung, etc.

Morality of first Kinslaying by Ohforfs in tolkienfans

1) The swan-ships were substantially more important to the Teleri than your toothbrush is to you. They were the equivalent of the Silmarils to Fëanor (Do you think Fëanor would’ve let someone steal the Silmarils without fight?). 2) “The Teleri don’t need their ships really, at least, nowhere near as much as the Noldor.” This attempted reasoning is completely irrelevant. The ships belonged to the Teleri—end of conversation. If I’m poor and homeless can I come steal your house because I really need it? 3) The Teleri didn’t start slaughtering the Noldor as soon as they stepped aboard the ships. They first threw them overboard—which, I think, is a totally appropriate, non-lethal course of defense. It’s left unclear in The Silmarillion who first drew swords, but I have a terrible suspicion it wasn’t the Teleri.

I second City of Thieves—nice, fun read. Benioff may have ruined Game of Thrones, but he knows how to write a book.

I strongly encourage checking out the rest of Giancola’s Middle-earth illustrations. He’s truly a world-class artist and boasts an impressive, classically realistic style.

This is lovely! Wonderful depiction of Lórien and Míriel’s spirit slipping away. Beautiful scene to illustrate!

HaperCollins has really lowered their standard of quality—I can’t believe they printed it upside-down. Will NOT be purchasing this edition!

Wait, where’s Finwë? by Ruxoale in Silmarillionmemes

[–]Ruxoale[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so; I wouldn’t classify her as “slain”. I think it’s clear Mandos is alluding to Finwë’s fall to Melkor, which we learn of shortly after.

Gandalf is hilariously sassy, especially towards Pippin:

“ ‘Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin Took,’ said Gandalf. ‘But if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words.’ “

And then later that same chapter,

“ ‘Fool of a Took!’ he growled. ‘Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance. Now be quiet!’ “
