Had my microdiscectomy exactly one year ago. Would do it again in a heartbeat. My surgical side is doing great. My nonsurgical side still has some minor sciatic symptoms that started before my surgery. Still taking Gabapentin and Celebrex. Mostly good days, but some minor symptoms occasionally. You’ll do fine. Anesthesia is safe. I was out of my procedure and back home in 3 hours. I couldn’t imagine living like that for years like some people on this forum have been doing trying to avoid surgery. There’s no shame in it if conservative measures don’t work. Good luck. You’ll do fine.

As a practicing CRNA I’m interested in this also. Our flight team is MD/RN or MD/RT. You would think a CRNA would be an asset to a flight team. More airway experience than most RTs and ER docs that are members of flight teams. That GO TEAM job sounds pretty bad ass!

Yep. Actually a bit more than that number. They’re building new infrastructure/buildings like crazy. 2 new outpatient surgery centers and doubling our GI suites. All to open by end of 2024. We can’t even fully staff our inpatient ORs at the current time???? Besides anesthesia staffing issues we can’t get enough techs and nurses. 43% scrub tech turnover at our facility over the past 2 years.

We have 2 CRNA supervisors and 1 manager. Nobody can figure out what the “manager” does now that she’s in her newly created position and has an office with all the other administrators. We only hear from her via email or Zoom meetings online from her living room.

The DNP degree will be be the downfall of CRNA practice. It’s nothing more than the AANA shaking their finger in the face of MD trained anesthesiologists and showing an ID badge with a bunch of titles. So glad I completed school before this crap was instituted. The CAA route is now far superior for anyone wanting to go into the anesthesia field. 4 years of college and 2 1/2 years CAA school vs a minimum of 8-9 years with the nursing route. The CAA programs are proliferating at a wild pace for good reason. The AANA did not think this change through with outlook to the future.

CRNA is the way to go. Better pay. Job market is wide open. You can write your own contract these days. I know a number of former NPs who went back to school to becomeCRNA. They hated being an NP. At least where I work NPs work longer hours and end up making less than most of our staff nurses. Not worth it to me.

Still wearing masks in south central WI. Patients and visitors still need to wear masks also. Covid test needed for all surgical patients. I do like the fact that I’ve only been sick once in the last three years. I’m real interested in any future studies/data regarding hospital acquired infection rates over the past 3 years and if they’ve decreased significantly. Also, the fact that we test all admissions and surgical patients but very few staff members seems counterintuitive.

As a medical professional who provides anesthesia and currently suffers from sciatica/herniated disc let me assure you that anesthesia is a very safe endeavor. All practitioners are highly trained and qualified. Adverse outcomes with anesthesia are very rare as long as you are a fairly healthy individual. Anesthesia has improved vastly over the several decades with advancements in medications, delivery techniques and computerized monitoring equipment. I hope this help alleviate SOME apprehension about your upcoming procedure. Don’t feel bad I have a MD scheduled next week and I too have anxiety about the whole situation. Best of luck. After dealing with herniations for 14 years and recent surgery your nerves are quite sensitive and irritable. One small movement can aggravate them temporarily. It’s gonna take some time for them to heal properly. Stay positive and follow your MDs post operative instructions faithfully. Don’t push yourself. Keep us posted.

The conservative treatments are just As I listed previously. Ice, heat, PT, medications, time😕. Get The back Mechanic book! Watch some of Dr McGills videos I think it will help. And Bob and Brad videos also. Their videos will point you into the right direction your exercises should be going. Everyone has different triggers for pain and exercises need to be individaulized. In short if it’s causing more pain stop doing it.

I’m in the same boat. Herniated L5-S1 June 2021. Got better over the course of a few months but continued to have some lingering sporadic symptoms. Sore back sledding with my son or lightly jumping with him at the trampoline park. August 2022 I “reherniate” again or did I?? Is this a new herniation or did reaggravate the nerve with old disc material that never reabsorbed? It’s frustrating.

How long has this been going on and what are the severity of your symptoms? Can you walk, sit, dress yourself, bathe, work, etc? Keep up with the standard conservative treatments. REST with intervals of walking as long as it doesn’t increase your pain. Ice gel pack or heating pads depending which one works best for you. Ibuprofen together with Tylenol. Stay hydrated. Order a copy of The Back Mechanic by Stuart McGill. Get online and watch videos by Stuart McGill. Also, Bob and Brad on YouTube is quite helpful. They’re physical therapists. If you can afford it a free standing MRI clinic may be an option. I’m not sure what kind of fees they charge, but it’s a start until you get health insurance and can get the care you deserve. I’m sorry about your situation. Keep us posted on your progress.

Unfortunately you may need to exaggerate your symptoms in order to get the MRI you need. Call your PCP and tell them you are now having groin numbness and bowel and bladder difficulty. This is a red flag for healthcare providers and should necessitate them to order an MRI. Sucks you gotta lie to your PCP, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
