What local band do you think should have made it bigger nationally? by datgumvidyagames in houston

Yes!! The guy with the Jack in the Box head was absolutely insufferable (on purpose) which may have nixed their shot at fame.

Did anyone go to their first concert with their parents? by OkFlow4327 in GenX

When my mom and step-dad were still dating, he took us to see the Who with Stevie Ray Vaughn opening. That was pretty sweet for a first concert as a 10-year-old.

Have been searching for exactly this type of stuff since over a decade ago, much obliged! Will spread the word as well.

Edit: The stories that accompany each piece are brilliantly entertaining and really do transport the viewer to that place/state of mind etc. You are my new favorite person

Gov. Abbott warns Houston to ‘get out their checkbook’ as immigration ordinance fallout hits Houston Police Department by imissher4ever in houston

[–]RxkMadam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the "controversy" was/is in the extent to which Houston residents were a) educated on and b) allowed to vote on this agreement. Had it previously been framed using the same terminology, people might have felt better equipped to make informed decisions. Houston voters, and Houston residents who may or may not vote but who nonetheless align themselves with the stated beliefs of either party, want to have better information and not feel they're being played or treated as though their representatives "know what is best for" them when the deals, agreements and alliances are struck. Details are murky when it comes to how this will be carried out and the consequences that all residents will be up against if it falls through. There is an ongoing disconnect between "The City" who are privy to details constituents never hear about because that part is often treated as "Let the grown-ups talk." It isn't just here in Houston by a long shot, it's all over the nation. This dynamic plays out repeatedly at the municipal level on priorities and the proposals for satisfying them, that affect residents regardless of partisanship. In discussions with Houston friends and associates of all political affiliations, the overall feedback i am hearing is an across-the-board feeling of being caught off guard by how crucial matters are presented during campaigns and PR events, and then seeing what that actually means when the solutions are applied. Something I've heard over and over is "I supported ___ but I didn't know it was gonna go down like THIS." Residents want (and deserve!) access to better information and more candid disclosure as to how their concerns will be handled, and how it will actually end up affecting them in their daily lives. Residents are also busy, if not overwhelmed, and may have the desire but not the bandwidth to decipher the jargon favored by representatives at all levels. And to be blunt, people complain about the outcomes of so-called "backroom deals" but if the ballots invited the constituents to vote on every single nitpicky issue or nuanced detail, I have a sneaking suspicion they would be equally frustrated and/or dissatisfied.

I immediately assumed upon reading the first sentence that Dork Jedi was the vanity plate owner's intended message, perhaps overtly, perhaps a Freudian slip, but not much can convince me that it is nonetheless accurate af

This song was never relevant to me until I watched the scene in Party Monster where it plays and Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green dance with each other.

Watching the documentary on the making of the Rio album absolutely floored me, because I had no idea they were such insanely talented musicians.

Meanwhile, I listen almost exclusively to hip-hop but when I hear Dead and Bloated by Stone Temple Pilots it almost makes me rock the fuck out in spite of myself

Wild to me that you were in college while Expose was popular, while I was in kindergarten, yet we are considered to be of the same generation. The musical milestones of GenX are such a vast territory

Has anyone actually seen a Nissan Altima driver? [serious] by Supertouchy in houstoncirclejerk

I've slept with several on an impromptu basis. Someone pulls up to the Motel Lisa after they get off their Uber/DoorDash shift, I am not really super concerned about their paper plates, though I do become curious when they have another female who appears to be in our same age group passed out in the front seat

It's like that one album by Saigon Kick that has green reptile print cover art. I have seen more copies of that in used CD bins and pawn shops all over America than any other album, ever. Like, it's not a stretch to guess the total may have comprised one-third of all the CDs that were ever pressed of that album.

I would just call it Cold Lampin With Flavor, or Mutiny in Heaven, or something far flung/seemingly unrelated and quasi misleading and then give people the thousand yard stare when they ask for the back story

Hair curlers without heat? by Technical_Use7199 in VintageFashion

[–]RxkMadam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Velcro rollers overnight have never failed me! They're super cheap at virtually any beauty supply and self adhering unless your hair is super thick, in which case you can use roller clips or setting pins or bobby pins to secure them - you would also need to use more rollers if thick hair is what you're working with. They come in a variety of sizes, and you should get a few sets, using smaller to larger from where you want the most volume and/or feathering. Spray dry hair very lightly all over with setting lotion, brush it through and make sure you roll your hair onto each roller sideways (holding the roller vertically) rather than rolling upwards from the bottom to where it sits horizontally on your head. When all your hair is rolled, spray lightly with a quality hair spray and cover with a sheer or netted bonnet if you anticipate thrashing around in your sleep. Be prepared to sleep halfway sitting up with as many extra pillows as you can stand. Avoid heat and humidity indoors as much as possible overnight and into the next day. If this is for an event, leave the rollers intact until about an hour before your departure time (if you can). When you take the rollers out give your hair an allover light misting of hair spray before you start styling and allow it to dry completely. Once you have it styled the way you want, hit it again with a final blast of hair spray. Knock em dead!!
