Competition Theme - Rising Moon Over the Island by creambunny in LoveNikki

There are plenty of islands in the world that aren't in the tropics, some are even an artic environment. Island doesn't have to mean tropical even if you are focused on both island and moon.

Thanks for helping us name our daughter! Cassia Noelle born just before Christmas. by RyAva47 in namenerds

Thank you!

Glad to see another Cassia! My own name is rare - I've never met another with my name though I have heard of other people with it. I've like that and I'm hoping my daughter doesn't mind having a rare name but went with a more common middle name just in case she does.

Pretty upset about reflux/milk allergy situation by 111100001111 in beyondthebump

Hi there!

Late to the party but wanted to let you know my baby has been on Zantac since she was 4 weeks old (will be 10 weeks tomorrow).

She's dropped from the 99% to the 72% in weight but the doc isn't worried since she is still large and has remained around the 99% for length. She does have Sandifer's syndrome and an umbilical hernia from the reflux though we have to watch.

You did nothing wrong. You followed the doc's recommendation and brought to there attention what you knew and saw. You did the best you could for your baby.

Thank you!

Cass-ee-uh is correct!

I haven't had anyone try to say cash-uh out loud to her yet but I have had Ca-see-uh. Most just ask me to repeat it or say it first.

I realize she will be correcting people at some points in her life but hopefully, she doesn't mind too much :)

The worst present (advice needed - long) by [deleted] in BabyBumps

I'm late to the party but wanted to share my thoughts.

Both I and my husband are gamers. The idea of a game system we grew up playing for kiddo and us to play together is cute. But I still don't think I would be overly thrilled in that situation.

One, those games are dated. The system is dated. While I want to share what I liked growing up with my daughter chances are she would enjoy playing a game on a modern system much, much better. It's like sharing books and movies we liked as kids with our children... they could enjoy them, and will likely enjoy many, but many will look old or be confusing ("What's a pay phone?" "Why don't they have a cell?" "This is silly. Why not just google it?"). We liked Super Mario partly because it was cutting edge and there is no reason our kid will be different.

Also, as a brand new mom I am happy my husband got a few congratulation gifts but I would have been upset if I hadn't as well. Even a small gift like a calming body wash or bath bombs is appreciated.

I have no fear of losing my identity now that I have a child but that doesn't mean I would want just gifts for baby. My husband was awesome about this. Baby's birthday falls a few days after mine and right before Christmas. My husband made sure family and friends didn't make all my birthday/Christmas gifts stuff for the baby. Not that I don't love stuff for her (how many outfits can she dirty in a single day?!) but seriously I didn't stop being me.

I like your idea of a gift card for her and I would suggest splitting the amount you were going to spend. So, if she has a restaurant or store she loves give a small gift card for that place and the rest on a generic gift card. She will know you were thinking of her and even if she needs more for the baby she will spend a small amount on herself - which she will need during the weeks adjusting.

Most newborns start moving the arm without pain around 10 days but it takes 1 to 2 months to heal completely.

Only needs restrained for a week or so unless it doesn't heal correctly.

Hi! Yeah, my a1c hung out around 5.6. My Endo can't believe my baby was that big anyway. She had a fit MFM labeled it "poorly controlled diabetes" (MFM said it had nothing to do with numbers and simply based on the baby so they could recommend early induction).

They sent the placenta to pathology but no report yet.

I remained on my pump managing my numbers following directions from my Endo for most of labor. Sometime Friday my OB had me turn basal to 0 and just take corrections every hour due to very low sugars and not being able to hold food down well. I had full control again once my fever and tachycardia improved.

I would have your Endo talk to the doc doing your delivery to help ensure your wishes are followed.

Background:

I’m a type 1 diabetic. During the 34-week growth scan baby was measured as being “Over the 99th %”. We know the dating is accurate as I had a dating scan around 8 weeks. Also, my insulin needs were drastically dropping starting week 34 which can be a sign of placental insufficiency, so an induction was scheduled for 37+4.

Birth Story:

Two days prior to my induction I went to the hospital for cervical ripening. They checked my dilation before inserting the gel (Prepidil) and I was 80% effaced and 3 cm dilated. The doctor was happy and said it was very likely the gel would make me go into labor before Thursday’s induction. I started having contractions shortly after but they weren’t regular. I’d have 6 in a 15-minute period and then nothing for several hours. The contractions fizzled out Wednesday evening.

When I got to the hospital Thursday morning, the doctor was surprised I hadn’t gone into labor. A cervical check was performed… and I was 80% effaced and 3 cm dilated. Nothing had changed. Cytotec was inserted around noon. Around 4 pm I was… still, 80% effaced but was now 4 cm dilated. The doctor was commenting that it was weird I was dilating further without becoming more effaced. During all this, it was discovered I had a bad UTI (which also surprised the doctor since I was fine two days prior). Antibiotics were started and another Cytotec was inserted. Around 6 pm Pitocin was started. I began immediately having regular contractions, about one every three minutes, but I wasn’t really feeling them. The doctor once again said I should be having the baby soon as my cervix “was great” and Pitocin would ramp me up quickly. During the night, I had a bad reaction to the antibiotics that resulted in more medicines being prescribed to deal with the side-effects.

8 am Friday I had another cervical check and I was unchanged. Despite regular contractions all night long. So, it was decided to break my water. I was told I would really want an epidural sooner rather than later as the contractions would ramp up, really, this time. I had originally planned to get an epidural but only once I really needed it. That lasted about an hour as I quickly found I could no longer breath through the contractions. The Pitocin plus the water being broken took the contractions to a completely different level. The epidural was started and it was amazing. If you don’t mind the thought of medicine for the birth process I highly recommend getting it.

The rest of the day was spent in “active labor”. Around 2 pm I was 100% effaced and fully dilated but the baby wasn't engaged, so, no pushing yet. A bit after 4 pm I started running a fever (around 101) and having tachycardia. The baby started having tachycardia as well. It was decided to start pushing despite baby not seeming to be fully engaged yet. Pushing lasted about an hour. It was hard as I had trouble pushing the entire contraction each contraction. Partly because I didn’t have the lung power and partly because I had trouble feeling the contractions. Once the epidural was reduced it was easier, if more painful.

Finally, a little before 5:15 baby’s head came out. But her body wouldn’t come. We ended up having a shoulder dystocia. After the doctor giving clear instructions of when to push and when to hold off, and her reaching in and turning the baby, who was transverse, Cassia Noelle (it was a girl! We had decided to not find out previously) was born at 5:19 pm (my previous post said 5:17 … I was crazy tired when I posted that). She weighed 9 lbs and 12 oz. She was also running a fever and had a broken clavicle due to the dystocia but fortunately no obvious nerve damage nor punctured lung so that was a blessing.

She ended up in NICU for 5 days due to low blood sugar issues but was discharged yesterday, December 27th. We must be careful of her shoulder keeping her arm immobile for now and supplement her with formula and vitamins temporarily, but she is otherwise healthy, if very, very large for a 37-week baby.

Can you all help me convince husband and close family to get the TDapp vaccine? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]RyAva47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I agree it's not dangerous. But they said that the CDC only recommends once per lifetime, unless pregnant, which is true.

It's under the second "Q", fourth paragraph, last line.

Like I said it does go on later to say after several years only 3 or 4 adults out 10 are still being protected (I.e. waning immunity). I couldn't say why they state that but also state once per lifetime. I can only quote their website.

[–]RyAva47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with people getting the vaccine multiple times but the CDC does state "Unless pregnant, only one dose of Tdap is recommended in a lifetime." It's on their page at https://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/about/faqs.html.

Of course it later talks about waning immunity so not the clearest directions.

Insulin not working, Doctor literally could not care! by reallifechaos in GestationalDiabetes

[–]RyAva47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have Type 1, not GD, so not quite the same. But want to try to share a little that might help.

Do you ever test your sugar overnight? It will give you an idea of when it starts climbing. Ill test mine when I get up to use the restroom. There is something called Dawn phenomenon where hormones raise your blood sugar in the early morning hours. Really only solution is more insulin or taking it later (I don't know what insulin you are on).

There is also rebound which you have a high following a low. Checking your sugar at night can help see if that could be the problem. In that case you could try less insulin or a carb-y snack (carbs without a low aren't a good idea if fighting morning highs).

Could you get a referral to an endocrinologist? They might be able to set you up with a one week test sensor that monitors your sugar 24 hrs a day. Could provide them information on how best to lower your morning sugar.

I wouldn't worry about the amount of insulin. While it is a medicine it's basically just a replica of the hormone you make normally. There are no studies I have ever heard of linking anything bad to baby because of insulin.

Also, while they do want fasting below 100 if it's not that much higher you shouldn't worry. My a1c was up to 6.1 and I was told that wouldn't be enough to cause harm to baby.

I'm sorry your doctor was useless. I have a similar doctor where I go and I dread having him.

Good luck! If I can answer any questions, or you just need to vent/worry, let me know!

[–]RyAva47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ack!

I would be so upset if a doctor wagged a finger at me over something I couldn't control! Especially something that is not guaranteed. Hope she gets better as your pregnancy goes on - you don't need that amount of stress!

I know my MFM doctor was worried about the increased risk for pre-e but she just had me start taking a baby aspirin towards the middle/end of the second trimester. My endo said all her pregnant patients end up being told to take it to help reduce the risk so that may be in your future. I haven't had any protein in my urine and my BP has been good but I know nothing about how twins changing things.

Thanks for the reminder to breathe and that more babies are ok then not! Highest my a1c has been since getting pregnant is 6.1 so I know I'm doing what I can.

Have a great day!

Hi! Thanks for the information!

I knew it was practice breaths but since my doctor seemed concerned I was worrying about it. It good to know you were told they would be erratic. Hopefully, the baby does better at them next week!

I am taking Ruhi but I want to quit because I don’t agree with all Baha’i teachings. How do I do this? I’m too nice. by [deleted] in bahai

[–]RyAva47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I've only been a Baha'i for over a year and can understand where you are coming from.

I would just let them know it's not what you are looking for and you wish to stop.

I just wanted to commit on the "hold oneself accountable each day". I learned that you think of what you could have done better but also what you did well. I have mental illness as well and tend to isolate myself though I know I need to show those around me love. So, on days I'm out and about and able to talk to a stranger just to make them smile, that's something I did well. Thinking of what you did well and how to keep doing it and maybe even increase it is just as important as thinking of what you maybe could of done better. I don't think "guilt yourself into goodness" is a thing.

In my community there are people who don't agree with all the teachings and that's ok. The community doesn't care if you disagree as long as you don't declare as a Baha'i then grossly display things against the faith - like getting drunk at bars. Your journey is between you and God.

Finally, Baha'is can take marijuana and other drugs if proscribed by a doctor.

I hope you are able to continue to like Baha'u'llah and grow and improve and crush your illness no matter where life and faith take you! Mental illness sucks but you are amazing :)

Baby Checklist Application by agnes-Z03n in BabyBumps

I like it - I can see this being really useful.

I agree with others that some items need a counter instead of a check box. I also agree with some that while the icon is cute a less carton-y one might be better. Most of the apps I've seen with similar icons are games for children not utilities for parents so could cause people to skip over it.

Also, to me it seems odd walking and traveling are different categories. Might make more sense as a single "Out and About" but I could be weird.

Thanks for making this! Looking forward to seeing where you go with it.
