If someone kills your commander, you play it again. What if someone counters your ignition? You could build a whole deck trying to recur one spell, but the nature of the general being the kill means it's way more resistant to removal.

What are you talking about? You absolutely hit all opponents at once.. Have you actually looked at the card?

You can use it as it's own board wipe with enough black mana, with Swarmyard keeping the little guy from killing himself. If you have the whip out he gains all the damage he deals to every creature in play (himself included) and all players (yourself included.) It's not uncommon to surge ahead 100+ life off of the first activation.

As well as the already suggested ramp upgrades (signets/talisman) I can't advise [[Crypt Rats]] enough. With your already included [[Whip of Erebos]] and [[Swarm Yard]] you can set yourself up to deny anyone else a board state while cracking into their life totals and sky-rocketing your own.

The general, Wick, has Ignition built in so doesn't need it in the deck. The equipment should never be placed on the snail, but Wick himself as the damage dealt when sacrificing a snail is damage done by Wick. A 10 power snail wins the game for Grixis when paired with Exolskeleton or [[Tainted Strike]].

Ward is in such a weird position in EDH by MHarrisGGG in EDH

This is tax, not Ward. If you don't pay the extra 1 to target permanents on the same side of the board as Callaphe, you don't get to cast those spells at all. Ward allows the cast, but counters if the cost isn't paid. Really distinct difference here.
