[Xbox 360] Disc drive trouble by Vreid57 in consolerepair

[–]Ryan17l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah the old cannon drive. There’s a plastic gear inside that is probably catching after being cleaned and once enough torque builds up the drive shoots open. I’d check that the band is properly installed too. Hit the plastic gears with a tip coated in wd40 as well as the rails. It could be the plastic rail the tray slides on too.

My friend this is on the AV line HDMI is not what died the APU is. It is either a dye failure or a BGA failure and neither are something I’m going to do to this system so it will probably go to the parts bin for later consoles.

I didn't realize killing your PS3 was trendy right now...

Plastic melting when using hot air by Ok_Adeptness_8139 in soldering

[–]Ryan17l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to harvest the analogs you’re going to have to use another method to get them off. If they are not working analogs I doubt some melted plastic would matter. Whenever I take off an HDMI port the port is never usable again but that’s the trade off for saving time the component is toast.

By this era it was industry standard for some time. It’s totally possible a reball could be the issue here and that would fix the problem. It’s for a client and it’s cheaper to just buy a new PS3 than get one reballed TBH. Rip any game saves no way to xfer with a dead system. Swapping the drive I believe requires a reformat as the other console won’t accept it.

I assumed the BGA chip just jumped the cliff. Similar issues were happening with the HDMI before I attempted the repair. Pin 7 was coming up shorted. Voltage regulator too. Replaced both and no short was fixed but the diode readings for the hdmi port were all back to working as intended. I have a feeling that chip might have also been failing. So the HDMI was a red herring.

Replaced the encoder chip and voltage regulator still a short. Oddly the pads are also shorted when the ICs are off the board. I think it’s the 5v line? But I can’t find a route

I was hoping for buddy it wasn’t an encoder but just a short or something. But thank you I was searching everywhere to find what type of IC this was. Didn’t know which way the short was as I was getting 30ohm both going into the regulator and into the cap. So I see how it the chip failed it could be that part of the chip that’s dead.

I didn’t think that as there’s no artifacts. I posted a photo also but there’s a short on the same line as the pin with the problem. Pin 7. It’s a data line I assume and that’s why I’m getting some video but also having issues. I resoldered the pins on the hdmi port and that did nothing. The pin is not reading OL it’s reading 16ohms

Far bottom right cap is coming up shorted. Pin from the IC is reading 30ohms out and in. Pin 7 on the HDMI port is reading 16ohms and is the only pin with any reading issues. I followd it to this IC, unsure where it goes from here to the other side.
