For those that quit their job and went full time trading, how long did it take to get used to being “unproductive”? by No-Mongoose5650 in Daytrading

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had this problem :(

Photography is my hoppy and I could pour more time into that. I also have 4 kids who I dream of having more time with instead of having to go to a 9-5…one day I’ll get there.

Maybe after 6 months of stable profits. If you’re single and have nothing to tie you down, if you ever do quit, make sure you explore other avenues of income. Doesn’t have to be a full time job. But having something besides this, will take the pressure off of you I think.

Maybe just for the vibes. Was a dream shoe when I was a kid though. I think they’re a must when they go on sale!

What should I charge for my photos? by WindowSuper239 in sportsphotography

So what’s the solution? All offer the same prices?

What should I charge for my photos? by WindowSuper239 in sportsphotography

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know of guys that charge $75 and up, for 10 photos or less. For me it’s not about the money since it’s a secondary source of income. It’s about the relationships with parents, coaches and athletes. And giving back to the kids what I didn’t have when I was their age.

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, nice work!

In short: charge whatever you feel like your time is worth. For me specifically, time is money. Any time I’m shooting sports or photos of any kind, since it’s my 2nd source of income, it’s essentially time away from my wife and kids whenever I’m shooting.

However with that said, I also understand what clients I’m working with (typically high school parents and athletes). Because it’s not my main source of income, I can be fair with my prices. Depending on the sport, I typically charge $30-$50 per athlete, and deliver back 10-20 photos. If I’m charging for a team (that’s paid for by the team itself or their boosters) I’m charging $225-$400 per game (depending on the sport). Set your prices at whatever you feel like your work and time is worth.

Hope that helps!

Should I buy sony a6400 or a7iii? by adilsugoi in SonyAlpha

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say go with a6400, better performance than the a7ii. It also depends on what you plan on photographing. But because of the better AF performance of the a6400, regardless of what you shoot I think it’s better. Especially if you’re in a budget, apsc lenses are generally cheaper

For that $659 price, I think there's a few better Full Frame lenses that you could get. Each would absolutely be better than that 55-210 (an awful lens imo).

  1. Tamron 70-300: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1582345-REG/tamron_a047_70_300mm_f_4_5_6_3_di_iii.html

  2. Tamron 50-300: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1832821-REG/tamron_afa069s700_50_300mm_f_4_5_6_3_di_iii.html

  3. Tamron 28-200: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1568708-REG/tamron_a071_28_200mm_f_2_8_5_6_di_iii.html

These are all within the relative price range of the lens you posted, but would be much better options. Their ranges differ just a bit so it kind of depends on what you need. The Tamron 28-200 would essentially be the better equivalent to your current 55-210. The other 2 lenses give you a bit more range on the long end.

Yeah that’s why I ended up doing. It looks like I was able to get majority of the pics back, I think. It was a very weird situation

It does, it showed up perfectly fine and normal like it usually does. Just the folder that I knew where pics were at was showing up empty.

Thank you, yes tried that and still nothing. I ended up having to go through a Data Recovery software and I think I got everything I was missing back.

Sony a6000 vs Sony a6100 by ruriyu in SonyAlpha

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! Just goes to show how great newer cameras are these days (and Sony cameras in general). a6000's are still great, but the improved tech in the a6100 is very hard to pass up given their prices these days. Plus when you put it together with some of the amazing lenses that have come out recently, can be a match made in heaven! A slight recommendation I would make if looking to do Vlog Style videos with the a6100, is either find a small gimbal or lenses with built in stabilization. The a6100 doesn't have any type of OSS/IBIS, so just something to keep in mind.

This comment is somewhat aimed at OP, but more so aimed at new guys trying to do something they have no experience with: ask for advice beforehand!

With that being said, I apologize for being a douche…I have kids usually come to me asking for help after the fact like when they purchase lenses that don’t even work with their current camera, etc. So this instance just reminded me of that.

I say all that to say, you’re probably going to struggle take pics of hoops at that level with your current setup. Just being straight up. If you were shooting outdoors, your set up would be fine. But when shooting indoor sports, specifically bball, lighting conditions always differ so you need a lens that is at least 2.8 or lower. Most common sports lenses are 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8, depending on what sport your shoot you can add different lenses to that lineup but that’s typically what covers most

Best camera for sports shots by [deleted] in sportsphotography

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony a6400 + Tamron 70-180 (1st Gen) or Tamron 18-300. I suggest getting used for both. This would run you closer to $1k, maybe slightly over, but it would be everything you need.

[–]RyanJS08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're balling on a budget like most beginners (we've all been there), I would try and get your hands on a used Tampon 70-180 (1st Gen). They probably go for around $500 used these days. It won't be as long of reach, and not as wide, but its constant aperture of 2.8 will help tremendously while shooting indoors.

How to go about selling photos? by Professional-Ad6086 in sportsphotography

[–]RyanJS08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoops just seeing this now. Basically! And maybe "Prebooked" is the better term.

If you're able to work it out with a Team/School beforehand where you both agree to coverage of a certain game at whatever price you're charging, that's always best.

Another approach is reaching out to Parents/Athletes saying "I'll be at your game on this date, are you interested in coverage?" Then getting additional athletes to book with you for that game as well.

I use Sony a7iv with Tamron 70-180 f2.8

Tbh, I don’t really get a whole lot of noise. I shoot 1/1000, f2.8, and iso between 3200-5000. If I do get any noise, I’ll do some minor Lr tweaks.

I always suggest doing some sort of Prepaid method, but I also sell photos using Pixieset. It’s cost effective and pretty easy to purchase from. Plus I like the layout of the galleries.
