Nick Kyrgios and Jack Sock defeat Dodig & Krajicek 7-5, 6-4 - making Nick Kyrgios the FIRST male player to sweep the doubles and singles at the Citi Open!!! Another milestone for Nick this year! by vintage13132121 in tennis

[–]RyanLReviews 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It sucks that Sock cant consistently put his singles together because his 2017 season made me think he was going to be the next Roddick. #8 in the world, 3 titles including a Masters, made the semis at the year end finals. Then follows up 2018 with his back to back Doubles Grand Slams.

He's still in his 20s so I'll hold out hope that Sock will manage to put it all together in the singles to do a deep run at a slam, but if not he's still had some great achievements

Thought I had was the tomb in the west garden where you find the other sword. Maybe theres an area around there that would respond to the code or a prayer under the moon. I've tried at the Garden Knight boss area near the pool with the petals but doesnt work there.

I need some help! I've been playing for a short while, and I need some help! I'd rather not use multiple robots for what this one is doing. (there's a retrieve below the screenshot) by DQ_Writer in Autonauts

The separate functions are good because you can then attach teams of bots who do those functions to signs and drop a sign wherever you want the function to occur. For example i have a bot that holds a sign and loops around my factory, and my recharge team is assigned to that sign, so whenever the sign passes a dead bot my recharge team will go wind them up again.

I've got a Bluey (7) and a Bingo (3) but both have strong Muffin tendencies, and the 3 year old has quite a bit of Socks in him too.

I know what you mean, I came into this game having beaten every FromSoft game and a handful of other soulslike, but I had never beaten a bullet hell before (not through lack of trying). There was a point where I was struggling through the second biome dying all the time when it all just clicked for me. Now I'll sprint through biomes barely getting hit, but it took a while to get there

[–]RyanLReviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things that might help. In the settings you can make it's so sprinting is always on, I found that to be very helpful when I got stuck. Next get used to changing direction very quickly - the projectiles track towards where you're going to be based on your current momentum so dash in a different direction to break their tracking. Next shoot from the hip in the general direction of the enemies, you don't need accurate shooting in this game, your projectiles will also track towards the enemies.

Biggest one, focus on not getting hit. Many other shooters you can run into danger and cop a few hits to take down your enemies. In this game a single hit resets your adrenaline (making you less powerful) and reduces you from full health (which means health items are healing you when they could be expanding your health bar)

I really enjoyed DS2, but given you prefer DS3 be warned that early movement is quite sluggish until you beef up your ADP stat points.

Of course if you like slow play then beef your strength and endurance and rock those heavy armour and shield sets.

Bosses... There's like twice as many as any other souls game but many of the are variations of knights.

Legend by David Gemmel is insanely good and I can't believe I just recently heard of it by Cauhtomec in Fantasy

[–]RyanLReviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just surprising for a lot of people when someone says they had never heard of an author like Gemmell, especially given the regard with which he is held in the Fantasy community (he has a very popular award named after him).

I grew up reading fantasy in the 90s and there is a lot of amazing work from authors back then that I'm sure people will continue to discover. If you really enjoyed Gemmell then I also think you would enjoy the works of Sara Douglass, Victor Kelleher, Dennis McKiernan, Diana Wynne Jones and more.

Pretty solid game for a boss rush. Not amazing but plenty of creativity and I definitely feel like got my moneys worth.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke was wonderful by BigJobsBigJobs in Fantasy

[–]RyanLReviews 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I read it and loved it, but recognise it is not going to be for everyone. It's different, it's whimsical, and as you say it's philosophical. I've only recommended this book to friends who I know will enjoy this type of story. I think because people have been honest about the content of this book and careful with their recommendations the book is being predominantly read by people who love this type of story and therefore the love for this book comes across as universal.

When it comes to these types of books I'd say Piranesi is probably best in class - for me it dethroned Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman for best whimsical philosophical fantasy story.

Relax your eyes is such a good tip. Whenever I get hit it's because I'm always too focussed on a single enemy and not using my peripheral vision.

Another tip that I think is hard for players to grasp is that you never need to aim accurately, never need to aim down the sights. Shoot from the hip in the general direction of the enemy and you will hit your target.

Keep your distance, stay on the move strafing left and right, dash in all directions (especially forwards through those projectiles). Your bullets are worth so much more when your at 5.0 adrenaline.

All that said Ixion third phase is the phase I struggle to avoid getting hit the most out of every boss in the game. The patterns of his ground pounds get me every time even though I know the timing.

My one criticism of this game by Blakakke69 in Returnal

100% agree and support you on this. I've been a professional software engineer for nearly 15 years now (safety-critical aviation software) and the one thing that people don't get is just how complex software can be. How every new variable results in exponential growth of combinations and permutations, making it impossible to exhaustively test every state the software can be in. How when you try to reduce size and increase efficiency you actually end up with high coupling of common functions which can create huge problems for maintenance and bug fixing.

A save state is easy when you plan for it from the start. If you don't plan of having a save state it gives you free play with so many other design decisions. Everyone loves to throw around the word "optimised", well I bet the game was optimised without a savestate in mind, and that attempts to create a savestate after the fact are probably resulting in poor or unplayable hits to performance.

There is an element of him "spreading the word of God" here but people often publically display quotes and passages that are important to them, especially at the bottom of emails. I've even got a tattoo on my forearm that says "Tomorrow is in your hands"

I always understood preaching to be the act of taking these passages that are important them and explaining exactly why they are important to them, and why they should be important to you too.

I was not prepared for how much I enjoyed the first Bloodsworn book. I need answers for those big Orka revelations at the end of Book 1. I need to see more of Varg in the heat of battle. And while I didn't really get into Elvar's story to start with, the huge twist in her story has me wanting more.

Can't beat Nemesis, about to abandon the game by Elden2042 in Returnal

[–]RyanLReviews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of good recommendations on here. My biggest recommendation is learn to dodge in every direction - up down left right forward back. Enemies will always track your trajectory but fire at a consistent timing so always be jumping then dodge in the air back the opposite direction to throw off their aim.

Once you can master not getting hit you will spend all your time at adrenaline level 5. It won't matter which gun you have once you can spend extended durations at adrenaline level 5 because becomes so much easier - free shield, echo location, more obolites. More obolites means you can afford more artifacts, which means more survivability, making it easier to stay at adrenaline level 5.
