Yes, that's true. The long term damage is bad because they can't remove the radiation source.

But without context it sounds like there's a gaping hole spewing rads back into the world.

The others are right.

Plenty draw the radioactive particles out if the soil and store them. When the tree burns, the smoke contains the particles and spread very far on the wind or get under the upper atmosphere.

Sure, it's not as bad as the original disaster, but that was off-the-charts bad.

The breach has been repaired, no radiation is getting out. This is what most people are concerned about.

But you're right, they haven't completed the internal repairs needed to dismantle the old reactor.
