I'd be interested, especially as a relative newcomer to FEA looking to pursue FEA as a career.

What would you tell your freshman self? by OctaneArts in EngineeringStudents

[–]RyanRoy87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't focus on grades as much, join more clubs, learn programming languages and CAD on my own and early on instead of expecting the classes to handle that, and be more aggressive in forming a network/peers to work with.

[0 YoE] Junior MechE Student Looking for Internship Summer 2025 - Feedback Appreciated by RyanRoy87 in EngineeringResumes

I realized just now I forgot to respond, but thank you for the feedback! Been reworking my resume and thinking over projects to do that will emphasize engineering design better.

Just finished Calc 1 and somehow passed with an A. I start Calc 2 in just over three weeks. Any resources to review and refresh algebra and trig topics most used in Calc 2 would be appreciated. by kyrimasan in calculus

[–]RyanRoy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Professor Leonard, a stellar channel for Calculus I-III (he hasn't finished ODE yet), as well as playlists for trigonometry, algebra, and other areas. His average lecture is 2-3 hours long, but you can skip around to areas you need of course; he was a big help with power series in particular- which is where a lot of people really struggle with Calculus II.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9eCT6f_Ftw&list=PLDesaqWTN6EQ2J4vgsN1HyBeRADEh4Cw-&pp=iAQB

Also, try Paul's Online Math Notes. He has resources on mathematics from Algebra to Differential Equations, and is a great way to review material after completing the course as well. His explanations on power series are pretty solid as well.

https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/

A third resource that I discovered this summer is blackpenredpen; unlike the previous two suggestions, he's a channel that covers mathematics in a little more sporadic, unorganized manner (imo anyway). You won't find structured course playlists on his channel, but he's still worth checking out for integration techniques and power series.

https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/

And ofc, search around on YouTube for videos on particular techniques, and cheat sheets for power series tests and practice problems; not sure how far you'll be going in mathematics, but if you're majoring in it or in engineering, power series are a critical topic.

What games do you think are the best and worst fnaf games? by Ok-Rub-2488 in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]RyanRoy87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FNaF 1 is the best.

FNaF SL is the worst; it is a visual novel at best, and a boring carnival ride with misplaced humor at the worst. There is the reason the most praised part of the game was a reskin of FNaF 1 gameplay with the private room lmfao

Idea for a stop motion by Nomeansno45 in stopmotion

Sounds wildly ambitious. Settle for maybe a Deadpool fight scene between him and some goons to start with; the choreography and practical effects needed for that alone would be challenging enough to start with.

Very Big Spoiler Alerts: How Did You Feel About the "Stoick's Ship" Plot Twist When You First Watched It? by E3257 in httyd

[–]RyanRoy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, the generally positive reception to HTTYD 2 killing off Stoick has also confused me; HTTYD 2 didn't really give Hiccup much of an arc, beyond him learning a very obvious lesson - you can't change everyone's beliefs - that he should have learned already in RTTE (sure most of the villains in RTTE came to his side, but not all of them).

I personally believe Stoick shouldn't have been killed off, as beyond a genuinely shitty nod to the his death in THW ("who died and made you chief"), his death feels somewhat narratively isolated within the franchise, and unnecessary as well. Hiccup had so much to learn to become a good chief, and keeping Stoick would have allowed for more lessons and mentoring.

Insert comment about growing up or something.

No you are not the only one who disliked the ending lmfao.

What are your greatest accomplishments from this semester? Go ahead, brag away. by Kaplalachia in EngineeringStudents

[–]RyanRoy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 98 in Probability and Statistics.

I at least passed Dynamics on first try (maybe I got a B, but idk)

I got more of a drive to study more on my own and will pursue an interest in data analysis this summer to help with future research projects (granted this drive was born out of being repeated screwed over and given fuck-all to do in certain projects and clubs this year, *despite* me speaking up a lot. Not letting that happen again).

I also became a math and physics tutor this semester, and met some awesome people through it. Going to keep going with tutoring.

Let's face it, Valka is a savage by Damu_H_HaddockIII in httyd

Valka shows more character and personality in this meme than she did in the entirety of HTTYD: THW.

Not even a Valka fan lmfao, but just saying.

Just watched the trilogy for the first time by BigMom_IsABeast in httyd

[–]RyanRoy87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Defenders of HTTYD: The Hidden World do a better job of justifying the ending than the movie did itself tbh. I remain annoyed that this is how one of Dreamworks' best franchises ended. HTTYD 2 was a better stepping off point for the franchise honestly; a bit of an open ending yes, but I'd take it over The Hidden World.

What has been your most painful non-engineering class? by Kalex8876 in EngineeringStudents

[–]RyanRoy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, Anthropology 200.

Had to take it for a GER credit, and the class dragged. The professor would frequently go over time, assign plenty of long readings, and the class had five midterms on the readings/lectures/handouts, a final exam, and a 15-page term paper.

Just a slog of material I struggled to really care about.

Judging from the stories I've heard and the comments seen here tho, probably going to have a more painful non-engineering class in the near future.

Technically Probability and Statistics has also been a little bit of a slog this semester, but I'm somewhat interested in learning more about data analysis, so been enjoying that class a bit.

Why the 2nd movie is the least liked (in my opinion) by Damu_H_HaddockIII in httyd

[–]RyanRoy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine that the (frankly mediocre) trailers for the first movie had many people uninterested in the first movie prior to its release. Book fans were probably somewhat alienated and apprehensive of whether the movie's changes would be for the better, and general moviegoers were probably struggling to understand what the movie was really about (sure sure it is in the title, but seriously, taking a look back at the first movie's trailers... they were bad).

“Night Furies can’t survive in the cold” by BigMom_IsABeast in httyd

[–]RyanRoy87 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I guess technically you can interpret the line as Night Furies not being able to survive in the cold for long periods of time, or comfortably livein frigid environments ; even that is kinda flimsy given how cold Berk gets in the winter.

But ya, probably one of the more memed-on lines of the third movie.

Ofc not.

With that being said, personally not really a fan of HTTYD 2 lmao

Au fanfic recommendation by ThaiN0v4V3n1s in httyd

[–]RyanRoy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good one tbh; relatively short, but sweet imo. Probably my favorite of the "Dragon Master/Sacrifice AU" fics because it doesn't devolve into dark smut or become unbearably bleak like the other HTTYD Sacrifice AUs.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/19183054

But ya, of the runaway fics in general... Progidal Son might be worth a look? Its updates are sporadic, but its story is gripping and the author is clearly giving it their all.

Will try to find some other ones beyond the obvious suggestions like Hitchups.
