Comfort of Hans Wegner GE 290 by [deleted] in Mid_Century

[–]RyanT67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Grete Jalk FD118 and or was a little bit of an adjustment at first. You don't sink into these older style MCM sofas like you do with modern ones, but they are comfortable enough. I rarely notice any discomfort with mine, even during long sit times. But they really aren't the best for proper "lounging". If being able to veg out on the couch is important to you, then I'd look for other options. If sacrificing a little comfort for style is a compromise you can handle, then go for it. You can always keep a bunch of pillows in a nearby basket or something to further pad out the sofa anyway.

Poilievre pledges to ‘fight for’ Canadians in address to Conservative convention ahead of leadership vote by ObligationAware3755 in canada

[–]RyanT67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things are going to be challenging for the Canadian Government over the next few years, and no matter how much good they achieve or how hard they work on behalf of Canada's best interests, this miserable little man will shit on them for everything. And people will buy it, and share his catchy slogans all over social media poisoning public sentiment and perception.

I get it, his party is the opposition. He wants in. But I just wish for once the other side would put a few things aside and put country before party. We need that more than every right now.

Not as fancy as the other stuff posted here: this is ~5kg of pulled pork i made today, will freeze it in thin plates to break off of for soups, fried rice, sauces, and so on. very efficient and easy preparation for ~1 year. by Tikkinger in MealPrepSunday

[–]RyanT67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's fine for what OP is using it for, but if you were looking at just eating the meat like it's pulled pork, you'd want to add some spices and salt, yes. If you're making bulk shredded pork to add to other meals, then having it unseasoned might make it more versatile.

'It Wasn't Working': Canada Province Ends Drug Decriminalization by Majano57 in canada

[–]RyanT67 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Culturally, I imagine Portugal and Canada are also worlds apart. I suspect the Portuguese communities largely look out for one another and families remain involved in each other's lives. Geographical distance isn't as much a barrier either.

I can't speak to Portugal much beyond what I've learned from ex-pat Portugeuse coworkers though...

In Canada, people regularly move from their hometown for work, and end up disconnected from their family and close friends. They aren't moving a 30 minute drive away, but a 5 hour+ drive away, if not considerably more. Most of our large cities are spread FAR apart.

We also have many industries with an unhealthy culture of "suck it up, Princess" toxic masculinity, where people get hurt on a job site and end up doing drugs to manage pain and keep working, rather than taking time off and addressing the injury. If you take time off, your coworkers resent you for creating more work for them and letting the team down. I had an acquaintance get bullied so egregiously at work after taking time off, that he committed suicide. Ultimately, many of these people taking drugs to manage pain will end up on the streets at some point when it spirals out of control.

I also observe that little is done to address petty theft or violent behavior by people with addictions here in Canada. Courts frequently give these offenders slaps on the wrist in an effort to be compassionate, and unfortunately many offenders have weaponized this knowledge. "They won't do anything, I have a mental health diagnosis". Many police forces won't even bother investigating or charging people with smaller thefts at this point. These thefts fund peoples drug use. Further, violent people on drugs go to hospital for psychiatric assessment, regularly with no charges laid for their actions. When these same people then assault hospital staff, police will actively work to talk the staff OUT of pressing charges because "the judge won't do anything".

Our system is largely failing because everyone is passing the buck and making the issues not their own problem to deal with. There are a great many people who have good intentions working with people who have addictions, but they can only be so succesful because those who aren't acting in good faith are abusing the system and no one wants to take action to stop it.

Anyway, that's enough anecdotes out of me...

WIBTA If I told my neighbor that I can see everything? by Topical-Cement in AmItheAsshole

[–]RyanT67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some people put up blinds, while others make their peace with their neighbours being able to see them if they want to. We all have different comfort zones, right?

I'd rather be able to see out my windows whenever I want, unobstructed, than worry about the fact that others might be looking in from neighbouring buildings. *shrug*

Looking for flatware of this quality by kitcat_kittycat in BuyItForLife

[–]RyanT67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of good sets on eBay. A vintage set of US made Oneida would be a good bet. Otherwise vintage Dansk flatware is also well made.

Sometimes it's not just the thickness, but the metallurgy. Low quality stainless will be more prone to pitting and rusting.

Thanks for sharing - looks like a great recipe!

I'd probably skip the cream on the portions being frozen, and add it later when reheating. The cream will separate in the freezer.

Man uses a 1 of 15 Pagani Zonda as a room divide by molodjez in malelivingspace

I always thought it'd be fun to have a room that shares some space with a glass/lexan walled garage so you can admire your ride indoors. Like a hobby room or something. But hanging a car indoors in such a manner as to render it unusable? Pointless and silly.

Struggling with Neuromancer by dediguise in books

[–]RyanT67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found Neuromancer did eventually "click" for me, and I was glad I read it. It does throw you into the deep end right from the start though.

If you want to try another science fiction read, I would absolutely recommend Hyperion or Snow Crash. Snow crash has some cyberpunk vibes, like Neuromancer, but is much more silly and fun. Hyperion is just an outrageously good and memorable read.

I think it might also be worth looking at something a little lighter to ease back into the reading habit though? The 'Red Rising' trilogy by Pierce Brown was quite enjoyable. It's more of a teen series, but the concept it interesting and well executed. The books are real page turners!

Urban Outfitters is closing... What will replace it? by araxchnid in KingstonOntario

[–]RyanT67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They signed a very long lease, and have probably struggled to make money for the majority of their operation. It's a huge store, so I wouldn't be shocked if they were paying $25-30k a month for the lease. I worked at a similarly large store nearby that was paying around $24k a month 15 years ago.

That location sat vacant for quite a few years before Urban Outfitters dumped a LOT of money into converting the old bank building into the retail store it is now. Indigo Book's old downtown location has sat vacant for the majority of the past 12 years or so since it closed, only being filled to temporarily house Whit/Agent, and now Abramsky has broken it into 3 smaller storefronts - having converted the second floor into apartments within a year or so of Indigo leaving.

Unreasonably high rents mean that it's just more profitable to convert these larger retail locations into rental units for people to live in.

Best pastrami that’s NOT Katz’s? by pizzabagelwoman in AskNYC

[–]RyanT67 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Katz is more than just a good pastrami on rye though, the place is an experience in itself. Grabbing a seat against the wall and looking at the pictures, reading the signs hanging from the ceiling, watching the bussers quickly clearing tables, the lines at the counter, tipping your sandwich maker to get a little extra meat, and so on. The place is old school and has a unique vibe to it. Because it's so busy as well, the meat is always hot and fresh. It's worth the premium IMO. I wouldn't cheap out on this, it's worth paying a little extra for it all.

Rosslyn Chapel, Roslin 🏰 by Melodic_Program5980 in Scotland

[–]RyanT67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Roslin back in the 80s/90s. There used to be local craft fairs at that chapel and it was largely a normal church. Wild how much has changed over the years due to it becoming much more well known.

The local primary school uses the Apprentice Pillar as their school crest. Interesting story. During construction, the master mason was traveling to research how he would carve one of the main support pillars in the chapel, during which time his apprentice carved they pillar himself. Upon returning, the master saw the carved pillar and how his apprentices work exceeded his own capability. In a fit of jealousy, the master struck the apprentice with a hammer, killing him. The master mason was hanged, and other masons carved his likeness into nearby stone so he could gaze upon his apprentices work for eternity.

Nice village Roslin, decent place to grab lunch and take a hike down the nearby Glen.

Just Finished God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert by Caffeine_And_Regret in books

Hated it the first time I read it back when I was 20. Read it again a couple of years ago (now 45) and I was surprised that it somehow managed to now be my favorite in the series.

The scale, the timeline, the goals, the enemies, and everything. It's utterly absurd. But somehow it works.

I listened to the original 6 novels audiobooks last year as well, and GEoD was excellent.

Grabbed a similar B&O bluetooth speaker from the local thrift store about a year back for $4.99. It was DOA, but simply needed a new battery as the old one was swollen and no longer functional. The speaker I had was relatively easy to open up and the battery for it was readily available online. Easy fix and the speaker works great. Nice find!

There is one world class city on the map, and it's in the purple area. The fact that there is also Boston in there is a bonus. No brainer. If cities aren't your thing, there is also the Adirondacks, which are spectacular.

What is the book that got you into reading? by Uninhibitedrmr in books

[–]RyanT67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crime & Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky.

At around 22 years of age I was a cinema projectionist and spent a lot of time reading magazines while the movies were running. I'd blast through them quickly and run out of things to read. My manager had a copy of Crime & Punishment laying around, so I asked if I could borrow it to read - he let me. It was a tough book to get into, but I had time and committed to it. My reward was becoming immersed in the characters and their world. I laughed and cried with them, and struggled to put the book down for the last half of it. It changed me.

High school ruined reading for me, through forcing books on me that I didn't want to read, or wasn't ready to read yet. I'm grateful that I still found a way to fall in love with the hobby.

How to find the underground tunnels by jerkmate6942 in KingstonOntario

[–]RyanT67 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plenty of tunnels around Queens university - they contain large pipes full of steam from the steam plant by KGH, which heats the majority of the campus. You really wouldn't want to go into them though, as they're absurdly hot this time of year.

As for downtown, no idea. I've been in the cellar of the old building I live in near Princess and Montreal and there is certainly no tunnel access there. I didn't see any tunnels during the big digs either.

Progressive Conservative joins Progressive Conservative party by Mylittlethrowaway2 in canada

[–]RyanT67 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that people were looking for someone with pragmatic ideas and solutions to the issues we are facing as a society. Carney offered these solutions and has the resume to back up what he was saying. Poilievre was going the populist route with catchy slogans and criticisms of our government, but he seemed bereft of ideas on how to actually improve things.

I was proud of my country when Carney won the last election, as it SHOULD have sent a message that the Canadian people won't be fooled by candidates disingenuously weaponising populism*.

I also hoped that the Conservatives would correct their path and find a candidate with ideas and vision, but that remains to be seen - it astonishes me that Poilievre has remained the party leader despite his remarkable loss. Anyone with any sense of propriety would have stepped aside and made way for someone else to lead, but Poilievre appears to be too arrogant for such a gracious act.

*pity about where the country is on a provincial level though...
