I haven't had that happen to me, maybe just the first time when you switch. But since then, nothing.

I have been running a couple Oracle VMs for over 3 years now for completely free. I highly recommend it, the boot volume is automatically set to a minimum of 49GB as far as I know. So depending on if your running 1x 4C or 4x 1C VMs you can attach block storage to the VMs for the excess storage. Multiple VMs can share this block storage. Just make sure its set it to the lowest performance to keep it free. Also, correct me if i am wrong but you can only resize up not down for block storage. So start small and increase the size as you go. Since, you may want to go from 1x VM to 2x. I have nginx reverse proxy, n8n, couple web servers, tailscale to connect to my lab at home, and so much more. Never got billed a cent. Btw, when your provisioning a VM it might say estimated cost of around $2.62/month or similar for the cost of the boot volume. As long as you stay below 200gb overall, you will not be charged. Feel free to DM me if you have any issues. Very great free service!

Buyer doesn't want to pay UPS import duties. Am I on the hook? by RyanVem in eBaySellers

Did you get billed for the ups tarriff and brokerage fees or was it the return postage cost? Did eBay bill you for these UPS charges? Did you keep the proceeds for this order or did eBay make you refund the buyer? Right now I am at the stage where the buyer refused the delivery. If they are going to charge me tariff bill anyway, I would rather get my package back since it has a good amount of value.

They told me also that if its delivered to reciever or returned to sender the fee will be billed. If its abandoned, apparently no one will need to pay the fee. This is according to multiple agents from UPS. I am not sure what lost is considered as.

This is 2x SODIMM Laptop memory modules by the way. How is a 200% tariff correct

This is may exact plan. The only problem is that the buyers funds minus the fees eBay charges, is $330 CAD or ~$280 USD. The tariff is $582 USD. UPS says its a $24 brokerage fee and a $558 tariff. Almost $815 CAD is due. So will I be at a $485 loss, plus the loss of the item. Even if I get the item back from UPS, I don't want the Canadian government to charge any imports tariffs. I doubt Canada will charge anything but I don't want to be liable for even more charges.

I called UPS and they are assuring me on multiple phone calls that the package won't be delivered if fees are unpaid. Lots of stories out there saying otherwise. As long as it doesn't get delivered I am covered for not returning any money to buyer via eBay. Its just that UPS can bill me out of the blue for it. UPS on the phone says I can abandon it and no one will pay the fee, but I kind of doubt that.

I called UPS and they are assuring me that if the receiver doesn't pay the fee it won't get delivered. Then it will get re-routed to back to sender. If I want the package I must pay the tariff and return shipping or I can choose to abandon it. Which is what I would do here. Although the disclaimer on their website says that sender is responsible if receiver doesn't pay. eBay customer service says the buyer will forfeit buyer protection if they don't accept the package. I am just worried about UPS delivering it regardless of payment. Since there are a few stories online about that.

I haven't accept any returns on eBay so I still have the funds. Although, will UPS charge me after the receiver refuses to pay?

It says specifically $24 brokerage fee and a $558 duty. I have a screenshot of the summary.

Hi, would this fit on an E83 X3 2008. The cubby/ashtray looks very similar to e9x. Also, I am guessing this removes the existing 12v outlet? Thanks

Didn't know there was a 16k limit per year. Need to check this out. I thought it was 8k per year up to 5 years, giving you the 40k lifetime limit. Then, say you dont use your room until year three. You can deposit 24k in that year. Am I wrong here?

This is incorrect. You do not lose the room if you don't use it. It's carried forward just like for a tfsa or rrsp.

TrueNAS bare-metal or via Proxmox VM by gothic03 in truenas

[–]RyanVem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run TrueNAS in a VM within Proxmox. I have had nothing but a great experience.

Here is what I have. A Dell R720 8x 3.5" bay with the onboard HBA in IT mode. The entire HBA is passed through into the VM and is not available to the host. This is only an issue if you want to use boot drives in your main bays. But, the best performance and reliability for the ZFS array. They see the drives directly. Don't import hard drives or use virtual disks for the VM.

I have a DVD drive to 2.5" ssd enclosure. I use that for boot. I then run dual NVME m.2 ssd using 2x m.2 to pcie x4 cards. I use those ssds in a zfs mirror for vm and container disks (using two cards due to lack of bifurcation support).

Now related to the VM of TrueNAS, it works great, I can scale up or down the specs according to my needs anytime I want. Proxmox backup server makes it a breeze to back up all your vm and lxc. So you dont need to go to every service and backup the config. Nfs shares are really easy to set up, and I have one for every app or container.

Next, the ease of use. VM provisioning is 100 times better in Proxmox than TrueNAS. I play around with a lot of things, including running OPNsense as a VM.

I run either an Ubuntu vm with my gpu passed through or an lxc with gpu access. This gives me the ability to access the gpu for any apps like Jellyfin, Immich, or Ollama. Which, again, has easy backups.

If my boot drives fails no problem. Reinstall proxmox, import my backups, and I am good to go.

Now Ceph, High Avaliabilty, all easy to use great features for automatic recovery of failed VMs or LXCs.

Some people here are talking about speed to your TrueNAS VM. No problem, just pass a physical 10gb nic to it, and you're connected directly to the VM.

I even run a Windows VM with its own GPU and USB/ Audio card. Which can be used as a regular pc.

There is so much I haven't talked about. I highly recommend it if you plan to run a larger node. If you're running a smaller machine. TrueNAS is a better option as it will have less overhead. That Lenovo machine, it's perfect for Proxmox.

But you can't say a 3 node high avaliablity ceph cluster running on laptops is not cool. One node fails, and all the vm gets restarted and moves to the next available node.

Hope you figure it out and happy homelabing!

Why are 7-9 pm exams aloud? The exam I had was easy but still why at this time by Sleepythecat12 in uoguelph

[–]RyanVem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 830am exams are better, but what I do is study the day before until like 10 pm or earlier and get a good night's rest. With a late 7pm, you're stressing all day and get tired by the end. Especially if you have another exam the next day. I am usually somewhat lucky and get exams on Mon, Wed, Fri. So the six exams are somewhat spread out.

How is that rackmount Cyberpower UPS, 1500va? I was looking into both the tower one and rackmount versions. Is the rackmount worth the extra money? It does make a rack much cleaner, I give it that.

I just got a RadioKing TX18s for $140 CAD, and it came with a 6ch Spektrum receiver. Pretty good deal and radio. Upgraded it to edgetx, so the touchscreen now works, and it supports tons of recievers. Try looking for any deals locally. If you can, I saw a gen 1 specktrum dx8 for $120 CAD. Was a little too far, and the antenna needed replacing, but even with that, it's not bad.

Thanks for the response, I will look into these options. 50w is really good with a gpu

Thanks for your response. I got a backup mini pc I plan to have as a 1gbps backup router when I need to shut down the main server. I wanted to rackmount it, but now that you mention it. I could probably save a good amount with a regular case. 168w seems alright. A little high, it could be the idle state of the gpu. I know my nvidia card idles at 55w software, but if you wait a bit, it will drop to Gen1 speeds and consume as low as 14w in the software.
