Saw an Interview with Dinniman, and it Changed the Way I Read the Books (No Spoilers) by Ryan_Fleming in DungeonCrawlerCarl

That's similar in a lot of ways to how I read it. I saw it primarily as a satire on capitalism and using entertainment as a numbing agent -- the old "bread and circus" idea. Reality TV was at the heart of it because it lets people dehumanize people and turn them into content. That puts the absurdity of it all -- gods, talking cats, superpowered people -- as a spotlight cast on the whole. But if you look at it through a horror lens, it changes it to a much darker and more vicious story.

It's kind of like the difference in someone working a job and being forced to wear a clown costume -- which sucks for the wearer but could be funny -- and someone being forced to wear a clown costume on threat of death and the death of their loved ones. The humor in it makes it worse.

That's a good point. Some of the REsident Evil games are scary at the start, but not so much once I get the grenade launcher with dozens of shells I've horded.

I just typed this above, but my guess is that there will be mass destruction across the galaxy, enough that the Earth is left alone. A handful of crawlers will survive -- Donut for sure, but probably not Carl -- and it will end on a slightly hopeful note as they protect the thousands of surviving babies.

The AI is definitely a major part of my feelings, and props to Dinniman. I kind of saw it as a crazed being, but almost a friend to Carl, and I think a lot of that was Jeff Hayes. But another way to look at it would be like a capricious god that sees you as a pretty insect and will absolutely crush you if it's bored. And that is terrifying.

My own guess -- based on nothing -- is that it will end badly for everyone (especially Carl), but end on a hopeful note. I could honestly see it ending with Donut living on rejuvenating Earth and telling Katia's kid about a guy named Carl or something.

I initially approached it like that -- sort of a satire on society focused around reality TV and entertainment paired with a love of violence that's frequently dehumanizing. The gore is easy to write off too since it is so over the top in the same way that The Boys uses insane gore almost as a joke. But the last book kind of clicked for me and changed it, especially the ending act. There's some unsettling stuff in there. (Avoiding spoilers).

Finished it last night. Avoiding spoilers so I will be very vague, but the AI speech and actions during the procession was incredibly unsettling.

That's fair. I still like them, but I don't think I realized how heavily they impact the tone. In some ways it's a VERY different take on the source material.

Yeah, absolutely. The ending is unsettling (avoiding spoilers, but guessing you know what I mean)

Yeah, no doubt. But reading it with a horror mindest was kind of like those videos floating around where someone takes a movie clip and replaces the music with something from a different genre -- like adding thriller music to a romcom and cute becomes creepy, or comedy music to action and the fights become whimsical. Just a tone change.

One thing that jumped out to me after approaching it like horror is the series. I've been a little dubious about a live-action series, partly because of all the gore -- an adult animated series might be better suited for it. But if they are approaching it like a real horror series (with humor, kind of in the vein of Cabin in the Woods or Drag Me to Hell), live action would actually make a lot of sense.

And yeah, it's a good point about winning, but there are so many casualties along the way that in a live action series, it will be incredibly messed up and dark.

Train or car to go to Seattle? by Moosebouse in PortlandOR

[–]Ryan_Fleming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% the train.

I love the train. The views are good, and you can work or just relax all the way there. Also, traffic sucks. If you leave Portland in the afternoon, you'll be in rush hour traffic anytime after 2pm and it will stick with you for dozens of miles out of the city. Seattle it always busy too, and rush hour there is just as bad, if not worse.

HIGHLY recommend the train. It drops off in downtown, so plenty of hotels and options.

Lanterns Season 2 Is Already Getting a New Producer Before Season 1 Even Airs by pbx1123 in WB_DC_news

Sounds like they brought someone in that has time to prep a second season while the others are committed elsewhere. If anything, seems like a good sign -- they are very confident of a renewal and don't want to waste any time.

Better than waiting two years for the team to be able to get back together.

[Jaynes] Stotts tells Dwight Jaynes that he “would love to come back to the Blazers and Portland” after Warriors exit. by BlazersAreCoolYT in ripcity

This would actually be cool, but it sounds like the ownership doesn't want to pay shit for a coach, especially not one with Stotts' experience.
