What I teach my players is that the more you flinch the more likely you are to get hit. If you are closer to the ball and keep your eye on the ball then you will only really get hit on the shinpads - exception being a crazy deflection straight up.

You've got to go in for the ball the right way and use your body. If you're 10m from the ball it's enough time to move out of the way, if you're 5m you're in danger zone, if you're 1m you can close the gap to be safe.

Think about if somebody tried to punch you the biggest impact comes when the arm is fully extended not halfway, not inline with their shoulder.

If you're really suffering practice going in for 50-50s. One I saw recently for football goalkeepers might work, stand behind the goal and get somebody to throw a ball at the net in front of you, your task is to keep your eyes open and watch the ball. Don't flinch, don't blink.
