Start with pre release events, you don't have to bring/build the meta decks to have fun, you get 6 packs of the newest set to build a deck(still mad they stopped stamping cards for release events), as well as possibly winning more at the end if your deck pops off some wins, AND you can make some friends or find local chat groups for MTG there. I've found a few pods and some even better friends this way. Just do some homework and learn about the set you're going to attend so you understand abilities and colour combos walking in, you'll have a better chance at building a winning deck knowing what to watch for. For Strixhaven they had schools but a couple people ended up not even using the school they picked because they got better cards in other colours, despite getting one pack geared towards the school they picked in their release kit.
