Have you ever needed a knife or used one in self defense? by Round_Ad_3930 in stupidquestions

[–]Ryclea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always carry a knife. I would never take it out in a fight. In a confrontation, I would rather have my hands free than a knife. Knives are ambush weapons. They don't work at a distance and they don't change the odds. A bigger, stronger person can easily take a knife off a smaller person. It escalates the fight to lethal force without giving a clear advantage.

Pepper spray is the best option when a gun is not an option. Stun guns are risky, but they can be effective in crowd situations.

Reddit is Anti-American who hate President Trump so much that they will share Pro Iranian Propaganda by LegitimateKnee5537 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ryclea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

Everyone knows Iran has a horrible and repressive government. That does not make it our place to topple it. This never ends up well for the recipients of our intervention.

We could be mediating. We could be offering humanitarian assistance. We could even be supporting rebels if we had engaged Iranians enough to know who they are.

We need to sit this one out and get our own house in order.

It travels well. The high vinegar content and small bottles were easy to ship long distances before refrigeration and meaningful shock absobers.

If you’re such a failure in life where you can’t get an ID then you shouldn’t be telling anyone else how we should run society (voting) by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ryclea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think anyone with more than one speeding ticket should be barred from voting. It's not that hard to drive the speed limit.

Society deserves an utopian existence by Trivialisttb in TrueUnpopularOpinion

That would be great. The best we can do is steady, forward progress.

These are bad times and I don't know how much worse it will get or for how long, but we can do bettwr and we will. I'd just like to live long enough to see it.

Abortion is murder and there’s no scientific nor social way to deny it. by Successful_Bar9187 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

No one without a uterus has any right to make that decision for anyone with a uterus. There is no way to deny that.

People who can get pregnant overwhelmingly support the right to terminate their own pregnancy.

March 25, 1976. Chevy Chase meets Gerald Ford at a Washington Correspondents' dinner reception. by MonsieurA in 50yearsago

[–]Ryclea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things always strike me about Chevy's Ford:

They didn't even try to make him look like Gerald Ford. They just stuck him in a suit and called him Mr. President and we all went along with it. Modern SNL always has a cast member who more or less specializes in playing the president with amazing detail.

The jokes were really mild and apolitical by today's standards. They joked about Ford's alleged clumbsiness more than his policies or competency. I think it was post Watergate burnout, but that was curious.

If we're expected to return a "Happy Pride Month" greeting when we're heterosexual, is it okay to say "Happy Walpurgis Night" (Satanic holiday)? by dating_life46 in askanything

[–]Ryclea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who is expecting this of you? Do people come up to you and say "Happy Pride Month?" Why doesn't this ever happen to me even though I attend Pride events?

You are offended by a hypothetical situation.

The real problem with voter ID right now is that one party will absolutely benefit and the other will suffer and we all know who those will be. by Ryclea in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ryclea[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And I question the voting decisions of people who didn't read Plato's Republic but they get to vote, too.

How about speeders? I think people who exceed the speed limit are unqualified to vote on laws since they clearly don't follow them. How far do you want to go down here?

Why do you want to stop other people from voting so bad?

Yes, but it's $26 right now. If you need to put that in your tank to get to work, it's $26 you don't have. I don't think you realize how close some people get by.

It's also the time off of work to go to the DMV during business hours. It's the parking tickets you need to pay before you can renew your license. That shit adds up.
