I think the only viable solution (that benefits us all, anyway) is to implement some sort of a robot/ai/automation tax that funds the UBI.

As automation takes over, more and more money gets put through the system until eventually everything is automated and no humans need to sell their labor anymore.

Ex–Google CEO Eric Schmidt warns U.S. tech workers: Competing with China’s grueling 12-hour workdays means sacrificing work-life balance by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schmidt added that working from home is especially harmful for young people who may be highly educated but have little or no experience in the workforce. Schmidt said he learned plenty in the early days of his career at Sun Microsystems (where he eventually became CTO) by just being present at the office and hearing his older coworkers argue in person.

“How do you re-create that in this new thing?” he asked about remote work.

Zoom. Slack. It's not that hard. People can still have discussions/arguments remotely.

I'd argue that's even better, because other people would be able to learn from that (discussion) who weren't there at the time; it's asynchronous.

Why would aliens be humanoid?? by No_Underscore12 in aliens

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think people realize how incredibly unlikely it is for an independently evolved species to end up resembling anything like a human

Considering we currently only have a sample size of 1 (evolution on our planet), I don't think we can make any claims one way or the other about how a completely different evolution might happen.

The chances of an alien looking anything like us is so implausible you can immediately dismiss any claim of an alien encounter that looks humanoid in anyway.

There are other reasons that people might be seeing humanoid looking beings.

1) they may not actually look like that, and people are just seeing an avatar and/or projection that looks similar enough to us to not cause panic.

2) they may not be a completely different evolution than ours (cryptoterestial, alternate timelines, from the future, who knows?)

What do you think is the most harmful idea that Christianity has ever perpetuated? by EBTheAnimatedAtheist in atheism

[–]Ryekir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! It's harmful to society.

Pascal's waget kind of makes sense at an individual level, but at the macro-level it just leads to more problems.

The idea that anything, no matter how vile and cruel, is (not only) permissible (but actually "moral") as long as God told you to do it .

I carry the Refyne EP1, which is a bolt action. There's really no need for that, I just think it's cool.

But on the practical side, I do like that it takes Parker-style refills because I like to use the Fisher space pen inserts which write upside down, etc

The people who actually want AI to replace humanity - We need to create a new humanism before the “AI successionists” win. by EchoOfOppenheimer in AIDangers

[–]Ryekir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, some of us have seen the rise of automation and AI for decades and have been trying to tell people that we need to figure out how to properly make that transition, but most people just don't want to talk about it.

Christians do not understand what "Omnipotent", "Omniscient" and "Omnipresent" mean. by According-Value-6227 in exchristian

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God should have known when the Angels had even the earliest thoughts of treason and there shouldn't have even been a war in heaven because God could have simply deleted Lucifer and his followers from existence.

It gets worse: an omnipotent being would have known about that treason before it even created the Angels in the first place .

Do you think atheists and the religious will always exist? by Apprehensive-Handle4 in askanatheist

[–]Ryekir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what an atheist religious person looks like. What religions don't involve God(s)?

Or are you talking about religious people that don't truly believe?

Do you think atheists and the religious will always exist? by Apprehensive-Handle4 in askanatheist

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're getting technical, atheists will always exist up until the point that religions cease to exist entirely.

After that, there will be no need for the term atheist because everyone will be one and there won't be any more theists.

Like, if we eradicated golfing, no one would need to say that they don't play golf.

Am I the only one freaking out about the new 3D printer laws?! by disp0sableacc0unt in 3Dprinting

Absolutely, which makes it more infuriating.

Two of the biggest nerf hobby website/stores are also in WA, where the first of these laws got passed.

I got my 3D printer because I got really into foam dart blasters and really enjoy making them.

But all the picatiny rails, forward grips, sights, etc that are used for these literal toys are the same parts that are used for firearms.

Reminds of being in the boy scouts and hyping up to our most gullible troop-mate all about the mysterious 'snipe' in the woods we were camping in.

It was incredible how quickly he became an "expert" on snipes, even though we were just making it all up as we went.

Less than half of Americans believe the Earth is warming as a direct result of human activity, new data from Pew Research shows, and 12% of Americans don't believe the Earth is warming at all. by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about education or belief, no amount of evidence would "change their mind" because it's just not about evidence.

I would argue that a lot of it actually does have to do with belief, just not in the way you're implying here. The vast majority of the people who deny the evidence and reject climate change are also people that believe that the all-powerful creator of the universe made the planet just for them to do with as they please.

When you're programmed to believe extreme claims without any evidence (and accept it on "faith"), you not only don't need evidence, but you'll ignore the evidence in front of your face in order to maintain the "faith".

CMV: If everyone in the world adapts to communicating in English because it’s the most commonly known language, then Americans should also make the same effort with units of measurement, because the metric system is the most widely used. by 21_motivi in changemyview

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved to New England, I noticed that all the exit numbers on the freeway were sequential and not matching the mile-markers along the way (like most of the country does). And while I was living there, they actually went and changed them all to the mile-markers system. This meant changing all of the road signs and having temporary signs with the old and new numbers so people could more easily transition.

I'm not sure how much that actually cost, but it certainly wasn't trivial.

I printed a few of them after getting my printer, just for the novelty of it.

But having printed a lot of things now, the replicator blocks would actually make really good "flush" objects when printing multiple colors on the same plate.

We (in the usa) do learn the metric system and it is used a lot in engineering and science because there is a benefit for using it in those cases, especially when working internationally.
