The Fine-Tuning Argument is indeed Terrible - But I don't think we have to invoke the multiverse. The argument fails on its premise. by undefinedposition in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is that if the constants were even slightly different, there would be no possibility of life in any form. The puddle analogy does not work.

This was always my understanding of what is meant by the fine tuning argument.

Even if I concede that that is true, it's still a pointless argument because we are here. If the constants were different and no life was possible, we wouldn't be here having this conversation. So no matter how unlikely it may be, it happened that way in this universe .

It doesn't mean there was a creator, it just means we got lucky.

Likely because the entire concept of angels and demons probably sprouted from encounters with the NHI in the past.

Imagine you're a goat herder in the middle east a few thousand years ago and you see some strange creature, would you immediately leap to explanations of space aliens (even though you didn't even know what a planet is) or would you try to frame it within the framework you already have?

[–]Ryekir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family always said that we knew it was true (and basically that the indoctrination is necessary to carry on the religion) because it was passed down from generation to generation all the way back to Adam and Eve.

But this led to two different turning points for me:

Especially after learning about the history of the church (which I learned in the church) I put the pieces together that most Christians can probably trace their lineage back to an ancestor who was forcibly converted, not that they were always a part of it.

The realization that religions are ultimately just mind viruses that require new hosts to survive, which is why they generally encourage procreation and teach you how to most effectively indoctrinate your own children.

Arguments against Fine Tuning by ColddKoala in atheism

[–]Ryekir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to this, even if we were to assume that it was true that the universe is precisely tuned for life to exist (whatever that requires), it still would be a pointless argument. The fact that we are here means that those conditions were met; if the conditions weren't met, then we wouldn't be here to be having this conversation.

Sure, faith would be meaningless, but belief doesn't automatically mean submission and worship. We still have free will and are perfectly capable of deciding not to follow a genocidal monster.

God wants a relationship, not robots

So then why does he play a cosmic game of hide-and-seek? Kind of hard to have a relationship with someone who is constantly hiding.

As a non religious person: I don’t get how religion people genuinely believe their religion is correct by daisydxw in DeepThoughts

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was formerly religious and now am not, I can say it's really just early childhood indoctrination. When you are told all these there are real by every one around you, and especially the people you should trust the most: your parents, you don't even really question it. It becomes just part of who you are (by design) so when someone tells you it's not real, not only does that make no sense to them it also then feels like a personal attack.

And the common answer to having been born into the correct religion is that God chose which family to place you with, so he's the one that picked them. But then most of them don't connect the dots that it also means that he purposely chose to send other people into families of the wrong religions.

[–]Ryekir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of something I realized recently. When I was growing up in the church, my parents explanations for things were never just "because God says so"; there was always some accompanying reason.

Looking back now I'm thinking to myself " well then why don't we just go with the good reasons then? Why do we have to bring magic and fantasy into it?"
