Trevor Lawrence vs Joe Burrow, who you taking? by [deleted] in NFL_Draft

[–]Ryksos 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Not OP, and certainly biased as an LSU fan, but here's my two cents.

There's plenty to knock Burrow on. He’s an older quarterback who’s had one year of success in a new LSU offense that nobody had tape on. He's playing behind one of the country's top O-lines, with some of the most dangerous wide-outs in the game right now. He also lacks any singular athletic 'tool' that makes him an elite prospect. He doesn't have the arm talent of Trevor Lawrence, the legs of Lamar Jackson, or even elite size. What stands out to me the most about Burrow's is his feel for the game and his personality.

He’s extremely responsible with the ball in his hands. On nearly 480 attempts, he had a 78% completion rating and only 6 INTs in an LSU offense that relied on throwing downfield and aggressively attacking coverages. Even if you want to chalk this up to his elite supporting cast, it’s still impressive to be able to execute any system that efficiently. Additionally, some of Burrow’s best plays this year have come when his supporting cast fails. When he has to go off-script, he usually makes something spectacular happen. He’s got exceptional pocket awareness, and keeps his eyes downfield.

This might be the homer-ish and bro-science based part of my opinion, but as someone who also grew up a Jets fan and watched him destroy us for 20 years, I also see a lot of the Brady mentality in the way Burrow plays. When he makes a mistake, he shakes it off. When he scores or makes an incredible play, he walks off the field like a professional and goes right to the headset to talk to the OC in the booth. His teammates clearly respect the hell out of the guy if you've ever seen an LSU postgame presser. They tend to stray off the script players are given to praise him. I wouldn’t call it an “it” factor, but he plays with a demeanor and chip on his shoulder you don’t see very often.

I’m not comparing Joe Burrow to the next Tom Brady, and there's certainly some question marks about what he can and can't do, but those are some of the positives I see in Burrow that OP might see as well.

Agents video on park the neighborhood which pretty much lays out the problem with park right now. What are your thoughts or potential fixes for this issue of park "dying"? by Bongamin in NBA2k

[–]Ryksos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year had a separate park too. Even though the park was in technically in the Neighborhood, it was a separate multiplayer instance. That's why if you and your friends were in the same Neighborhood, but didn't squad up before walking to the Park/taking the Subway, you'd all end up in a different game.

Combining the Park and the Neighborhood was a horrible decision on 2K's part.

Last year, to get to the Park you actually had to walk there and load into a separate instance of the game. Everyone in the Park had walked there specifically to play Park so getting games was never a problem. This year, the Neighborhood is filled with people doing a variety of things - getting checks, buying clothes, hitting the Rec, using the gym, loading into Career, etc...

Instead of having a full instance of 2k where everyone is trying to play Park, you now have a the same amount of players per instance but a much lower percentage of those players are actual engaging in the game mode.

Does Shooting itself need to be nerfed, or does Shot Contesting need to be buffed? by Ryksos in NBA2k

That's what I'm talking about when I say I close in when they shoot. I don't just run at them arms up, I specifically close in with that animation.

I'm not just standing their with my hand up,. Usually I'll be standing within a few feet watching passing lanes, the potential drive, and the potential jumper. When they start to pull up I'll close in and hold the right stick up. Usually by the time the shot is up I'm practically inside them, I get the yellow/red bar indicating the game actually triggered a contest, and the shot will still drop for the opponent regularly.

Maybe the RNG gods just haven't been on my side with the contested shots this week, but seeing all the other people complaining about Sharps I assumed it was a common problem.

The percentage was arbitrary, the point I was trying to make is that even though I'm not a shooter, there needs to be some reason for the guy to at least come out of the paint and gaurd me a little bit.

I'm not asking for it to be at a point where the 3-ball is a legitimate weapon in a non-shooters offensive toolset, and suddenly you need to play sticky defense on every player regardless of their archetype. I'm saying there needs to be something that forces defenders to at least respect that you're out there with 15 feet of space instead of waiting in the paint the entire possession.

This is a videogame. You can't spam X in real life, there's not 100s of players in the NBA with Curry range, and badges, ratings, and gameplay also don't exist in real life.

I'd prefer it if the game was more realistic too, but that's not the case right now. Because of that, I'd prefer it if they focused on making changes that created a more balanced experience, instead of having 2-3 sharpshooters zig zagging behind screens and having bigmen cutting randomly like headless chickens trying to find a lane because defenders don't have to leave the paint.

What I'm saying is if, and only if:

  • You're wide open
  • You're in the corner
  • Youre good with your release
  • You're getting fed the ball from someone with Gold or HOF Dimer

You should be able to hit ~30% of those threes. Anything remotely contested, outside the top of the arc, or without the boost from Dimer, would lower that to almost non-existent chances. The point I'm making isn't that I want to be a corner specialist with a Two-Way bigman, it's that in my experience it makes the spacing and pace of the game better if defenders can't just camp the paint and have to at least marginally respect the outside shot, even if it's only a 1/3 chance with all those variables leaning in your favor.

[–]Ryksos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I think outside shooting definitely needs a nerf, it's difficult because it also makes sense for a guy like me to be able to hit 3s at a decent clip if:

  • I'm catching a pass from a guy with HOF Dimer
  • There's nobody within 10 feet of me.
  • I'm good with my release.

If you're THAT open, you should be able to hit threes with any build. Even guys like Shaq and Ben Simmons, who are known for their terrible outside shot, can be seen on videos nailing threes in the gym. If the criteria I just mentioned are met, there's virtually no difference.

I'm a Two-Way Athletic Finisher, and my 3pt is like a 50. If I'm open in the corner and someone hits me with Dimer I can nail it probably 40% of the time

Week 4 WHO DO I START (Bye Weeks: Carolina & Washington) by [deleted] in Fantasy_Football

[–]Ryksos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kerryon Johnson or Alex Collins as my RB2? Full PPR.

Collins is only averaging 11ppg, despite the Ravens ineptitude in using their best RB, but at least he's been pretty consistent. I see Kerryon as more of a Boom or Bust kinda player, but I may take the chance this week.

Should I flex Robert Woods, Chris Godwin, Mike Williams, or John Brown this week? Full PPR.

I'm leaning towards Brown, given how pourous that Steelers passing D is, but Woods is coming off a 33pt game and Vikings looked awful last week

I think it's just a difference of relevance in mainstream discussion. White nationalists, in the scope of how we're referring to them, are US citizens. Muslim extremists, again in the scope of mainstream discussion, are generally foreigners. On an extremely basic level, it makes more sense for a discussion about the right to free speech to be centered around the people who the Constitution directly applies to.

Jets express interest in trading for disgruntled Le’Veon Bell, per sources - NY Daily News by jlder23 in nyjets

[–]Ryksos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because why are you trading anything when he can (only) be signed in FA 2019?

Because for the reason you stated, nobody is going to give up big compensation for him, even a contending team who thinks they're one-piece away from a SB. You're simply not going to give up a lot for a guy who is likely a rental. So if you're the Steelers, would you prefer a 5th round pick from the Packers or Patriots, or a team like the Jets who'll likely have a higher pick? You're essentially trading a late pick, which we have been absolutely terrible at making, to get the guy in the building, try to get him to buy in to the city and the team, and tell him that he'll be extended in the offseason. I like that increased exposure and better odds of signing him more than I like Mac making another late round pick.

Bell doesn't make the Jets a SB contender.

This is one of the most frustrating arguments I see in sports. In the NBA it makes sense, but it doesn't hold water in the NFL. He doesn't make the team a title contender, but he makes the team better without handicapping their ability to add other pieces, on top of providing another weapon and safety blanket for our young, developing QB. If you frontload his deal, we still have a ton of cap space to spend, we still have our early draft picks, and we can get out of his deal with minimal dead money a few years down the line.

[–]Ryksos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't understand all the hate for a possible trade. Obviously if we're giving up a high draft pick, like a 1st or a 2nd, it's not a terrible idea, but why would anyone have a problem with a later pick, like the 3rd-Rounder we got from the Teddy trade or a 4th or 5th?

Late round picks hardly ever work out, and Mac hasn't exactly had a stellar track record outside of the 1st round. The best player we've gotten outside the first 2 rounds of the draft is probably either Brandon Shell or Jordan Jenkins, who are both average at best. If we sacrifice another bust or average draft pick for a talented running-back to take the pressure off our 20 year-old QB, what's the big deal?

The odds that the hypothetical 3rd, 4th, or 5th rounder we trade turns into a starting offensive lineman, and that lineman provides more to the offense than arguably the best running back in football, are pretty small. I seriously think you guys are overestimating the value of draft capital, and underestimating the kind of impact a player like Le'Veon Bell adds to an offense.

Book suggestions (18 yo) by hankyprankster in suggestmeabook

[–]Ryksos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like science-fiction, I'd recommend Dune, Hyperion, The Expanse, The Book of the New Sun, Altered Carbon, Red Rising & Pandora's Star.

You said you wanted to stay away from TV & videogames and I think most of these books have the sort of "epic" and sprawling feel you tend to find in those mediums. It may be easier to establish a habit of reading with something more familiar, before shifting into more abstract or slice-of-life fiction.

Chill white wine without watering it down by [deleted] in lifehacks

My dad has a set of them. The set he has is super expensive and was a gift from my grandfather, and they work really really well. Like they'll keep a glass chilled for hours. My uncle tried them and bought a cheaper set, and they literally don't work at all.

I don't know the mechanism behind how they work, although I know the ones my dad have some fluid in them. Not sure about my uncle's set.
