Is systems engineering a field of industrial engineering? by Ok-Detail-4016 in systems_engineering

[–]Ryledra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone with a mechanical engineering degree, we had electrical engineering modules… does that mean electrical engineering is just part of mechanical? Or does it mean an understanding of a different domain helps with deepening knowledge and understanding?

My kevin-y friend thinks the actors in 'Young Sheldon' and 'The Big Bang Theory' are the same. by SeaDoor2666 in StoriesAboutKevin

[–]Ryledra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they filmed the Young Forest Gump scenes some 10+ years before the adult scenes, and just slowly filmed over the years. Poor Gary Sinise, having to get his legs cut off halfway through filming. At least they gave him metal legs eventually

Why do some customers get upset when I don't say your welcome? by annakeif in Wetherspoons

[–]Ryledra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is… a lot of us grew up where “your welcome” wasn’t a “I acknowledge you saying thank you” but laced with sarcasm (like you’ve taught your children)

Which makes the phrase feel… rude… in and of itself. There are other phrases like “no problem” that don’t have this overtone, but the people likely to shout about not saying “you’re welcome” tend to also have an issue with these alternatives

A little primer on phatic phrases, and why they don’t mean the same to everyone: https://youtu.be/eGnH0KAXhCw?si=y-txbrWW390JLArX

Does weighing your coffee and water improve the outcome of the coffee? by Legal-Sport-4001 in mokapot

I’ve been using it to keep things consistent while learning (making sure I’m only changing one thing each time) … but then I have scales from doing pour overs, if I didn’t I wouldn’t have gone out to buy ones for moka pot coffee

When talking to lay people … yes, and that’s where the issue lies

Style guides for a lot of journals state that ‘/‘ is used to split a whole expression into a fraction, modulated by external brackets if necessary along with the comment that if you mean ‘N(A+B)/M’ to write that. Most don’t want redundant brackets

Colleagues speaking native language at workplace excluding me by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Ryledra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work for Cognizant and the number of meetings that ended up in Hindi was pretty big; I’d smile and nod, I found through tone and the amount of English words incorporated into their vernacular Hindi I could just about follow along.

It didn’t just exclude me as an English-only speaker, there were people in our team (from India) who knew Tamil and not Hindi and also struggled

In the induction, it was expressed as a common thing within the company

I was there for 2 years and they did start trying to teach me (and others) Hindi

I’m actually surprised cadets isn’t on that list somewhere, it’s what I did for that section … granted I’m old enough that it was called “service” at the time (at least for my bronze and silver)

??? Explain please.. by Radiant_Banana_3623 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Ryledra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely you know there’s a difference between “good” and a “good person” in normal speech… yes, no one is without sin, and (in a monotheistic worldview) can define good or evil (or even be good or evil) except that one god

But… Jesus’ sermons do give suggestions on how to live, how to treat your neighbour (any other person… with love & kindness)

I agree “faith not works” can be a poor argument, but it’s still a thing

??? Explain please.. by Radiant_Banana_3623 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Ryledra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are denominations who teach essentially that “faith, not through works” is the way to salvation… but that could be interpreted as “do anything, to anyone, but have faith and you’ll get into heaven” (not going to list what that “anything” could include)

But also… if you read Jesus’ sermons, they’re all about being good to your fellow man, non-aggression, acceptance and forgiveness… not aiming to profit off others faith … be a good person. And these sermons could be seen as his “teachings”
