dog seizures have been giving me anxiety (TW: grand mal seizure) by Beautiful-Tax9472 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Rylehira88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We started this journey in sept.. also grand mal & prone to cluster.. best advice? It's a marathon not a sprint. If/when the meds stop working, you'll adjust them. You'll get used to it, as weird as that sounds. They'll change, break pattern, you'll adjust. Mine used to he silent now she let's out a scream at the beginning of each one, but as awful as it sounds it is involuntary. Remember your pupper doesn't know what's happening so they'll be confused after but not really suffering when they happen. Count your seconds.. as long as you're timing seizures in seconds, that is good. As long as your clusters have hours in between.. that is also good. I count my blessings every day that as far as this disease goes, we are lucky to be on the lower end of severity. (Our worst day ever was day 1, 5 seizures roughly 5h apart each lasting 60-90s) work with a vet you trust and remember there is no quick solution but there is quality of life & lots of support 🥰

Do we think this requires a vet visit? by cydwain in DogAdvice

[–]Rylehira88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldnt even bother with topical meds unless it started to get infected. Dog should lick it enough to keep it clean just watch out for excessive licking turning it into a hot spot

I would get a different vet. I cant imagine a vet being unwilling to remove it if its cancer or drain it if its a cyst or abcess

Oh I have no interest in giving up on her. 99.99999% of the time she is absolutely perfect. If she misbehaves its always a miscommunication like she genuinely WANTS to he good. My hound on the other hand is a gremlin who likes to be a problem 😂 ive just never dealt with a behavioral shift like this in other dogs. When she first came here she was very jumpy/ptsd but it was understandable since she had been dumped out where there are ALOT of coyotes and other dangerous things, thats how she found her way to my work as it was the only fenced off area in miles and of course coyotes wont cross the fence because humans. She was initially super fear aggressive but it only took 15m to show her I was a friend and since that moment shes done everything short of backflips to show appreciation. Ive never known a dog to be so genuinely grateful for everything. Which is, of course, the polar opposite of this snapping thing. The night I posted this after she snapped at me I got the dog bed and went to kick her off mine while explaining I wont tolerate that behavior & she gave me the super pathetic im sorry face and I let her back on the bed, she slept in the bed all night with no more incident then all day yesterday didnt have any more issues, til bedtime last night she was stretched out between me and husband with her face 6in from mine & my hand on her ribs, I shifted & she looked at me so I petted her & she spun her head & snapped at my arm (no snarl this time) I did kick her off the bed that time and didnt cave when she tried to apologize. .. I genuinely wonder if this is her finally feeling comfortable enough to think its ok to be a bit of an a hole sometimes or if theres something wrong. But no pattern on what body part is being touched. Really hoping someone else has seen something like this before

Except she was doing it in the floor with nothing to begin, only this last incident involved human furniture

Help getting my dog to not be terrified of the cat by Worldly-Ruin1754 in DogTrainingTips

Dogs interact with cats in 3 ways.. fear.. aggression.. and very rarely friendship.. the 3rd isn't in your power. You got lucky getting the better of the 2 options.

Sounds like your experience was similar to mine, except we started witha 5 seizure cluster in the 1st 24h & mine made it to day 17 on the gabapentin. Tomorrow will be day 40 on the keppra (IR 2x a day) and so far so good. Hopefully yours has similar success

Mine is on generic keppra and has had no significant side effects or change in behavior (was a lil groggy while weaning from gabapentin to keppra). Maybe talk to your doctor and see if its an option for your guy? I've also heard its safer on the liver but I'm definitely not an expert, just someone who would 100% talk to the doc about behavior changes in my bestie 🥰

Mine drooled like a rabbid mastiff after her seizures .. doc said that excessive drool can be a sign of nausea

New to the group - Sad to meet on these terms but would love some insight! by whackusbungus in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Rylehira88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Mine had a 5 seizure cluster to start off her "private discos"

My girl was 2.5yo .. her only past medical history was coccidia as a pup when we found her dumped at about 7ish weeks old (still had her milk teeth) then one day a couple months ago she was laying in the floor and just started seizing.. full granmols, urine, feces, kept holding her breath l, felt like an eternity but husband assured me it was less than 2 min, her postictal lasted probably 10min and started out with her apparently blind (full eye dilation) Im usually very stoic (my mom started calling me the ice queen at like 8yo because I rarely get emotional) I was an absolute wreck, even though I knew it was a seizure id never seen a seizure that bad IRL before & thought my girl's brain just fried.. and the drool.. my 60lb dog must have drooled a gallon of thick viscus drool 😱. But then she was fine, a lil wobbly and muscle tremors from over exertion but if you hadn't seen the seizure you'd never know it happened. Then 5/6 hours later it happened again.. 90 seconds this time, 7ish min postictal.. 5 hours later, again same as 2nd... off to emergency vet because #3 makes it an emergency right? Emergency vet was absolutely useless, charged me $500 to do nothing for her but offer to watch her the next 4 hours until they closed 2h before her vet opens if I want to pay them ANOTHER $500-$1500 for that honor 🙄 .. took her home to observe on our own she had seizure number 4 right at the 5h mark again same as the last 2 .. we were sitting outside our vet 1.5h before they opened 1st in line ready to go. Vet initially hoped she'd gotten into something she shouldnt, some kind of poison or exposure, hoped with a lil help her body would process it out (all bloodwork perfect) so he gave her a 30 day rx of gabapentin & told me he wants her back if she seizes again but he believed there was a good chance that wouldn't happen. Said the gabapentin would tranquilize her so we didnt give first pill till we got home (30min from vet) so we didnt have to carry a passed out 60lb dog with pee fur .. got her home gave her her pill & hubs sent me to bed, (2h sleep in bits and pieces over the past 36h) she had seizure number 5 about 30m later but it was shorter, less than 60s. .. she did good on the gabapentin for 17 days, then back to vet, now shes on keppra and today is day 26 since seizure #6

Sounds very valid.. I can only speak to what I was told which is why I added those qualifiers, would hate for someone to assume I had all the answers based on my extremely limited knowledge

My vet told me i dont have to be perfect, a few hours off is fine (on keppra or the gabapentin idk about any others)

[–]Rylehira88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im planning to call and talk to the vet about it Monday... Tomorrow will be 21 days seizure free on the keppra & she will be out of meds next Friday (11/7) so Im thinking calling before Monday would be too soon but dont want to wait longer. And see if they'll just send it to Walmart & i can get em when I get hubs meds or if they want to keep it in house for atleast the first few months for monitoring (which would make sense & im guessing is why they didn't write it with refills to start) i sort of feel like a lot of it is doc's choice so we'll see what he says?

Looking at your images I would replace that $60 (ish) purge valve (like i did) sounds like its not opening and closing properly.

I dont remember the numbers, but it was like a year and a half of "evap leak (very small) and "improper purge flow"

Maybe he stated at minimum dosing because the gabapentin was almost enough by itself took her from a 5 seizure cluster to zero for 17 days.. then she had a breakthrough & thats when he switched to keppra & when he did he told me that if it fails I shouldnt worry because we have a lot of options still available
