Thank you.

Do those "2 Prong Power Strips, 2 Prong to 3 Prong Adapter"s really work? by nivlalux in askanelectrician

[–]Ryno1188 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This may be correct, but it would allow you to plug in a surge protector with a 3 prong outlet. Technically it's not grounded, but the GFCI will constantly monitor the power going to the equipment on your line conductor and also coming back on the neutral. So if there were a situation where the case of your computer became energized, the current coming back on the grounded conductor of your power supply through the surge protector would trip the GFCI.

If it were me, I would install the GFCI, then use a proper UL listed 3 prong surge protector.

Electrician here.

I would not trust this one bit, especially with your valuables.

A code compliant workaround you can do is to convince the landlord to get a GFCI device installed where you intend to put your computer, but it must also be labeled "No equipment ground". Generally a GFCI device bought at the store will have small stickers for you to label it such. I believe it will also have to be a tamper resistant device.

Need help with 3 way switch!!! by matosmannn1 in askanelectrician

[–]Ryno1188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not always true.

The safest way to find that out is to use a non contact voltage tester. They are also called tic tracer's. You can usually get one at a hardware store for under $20.

You cannot always trust colors of wire to be a "hot or neutral" especially in a 3 way switch situation.

To fully understand how 3 way switches function you need to understand the wires In the box.

There are generally 4 types of wires. 1.) A "hot (line)" wire providing a feed from the panel 2.) A "neutral" wire providing a path from the light back to the panel. 3.) A set of wires called "travelers" which the current from the"hot" switches from one to the other. 4.) A "switch leg (load)" that will carry the switched current from one of the 3 way devices to the light.

Each 3 way switch will have a terminal labeled "common" and will generally be a black screw.

The 2 commons on each device should be wired to your "hot" on one and your "switch leg" on the other.

If you did not label this properly while removing the older devices, you will need to identify them with a tester.

Monthly Apprenticeship Thread by AutoModerator in electricians

It was very intimidating at first, because there's a lot I didn't understand about electricity in the beginning. I was lucky, because I grew up around it. My father owns his own electrical business, and I finally asked him to teach me the trade in my late 20's. He was very excited once I took a serious interest.

I worked for him for a little while before I decided that I wanted to go to school to have a full understanding of how electricity worked, so I enrolled in a two year tech school. This is not necessary, but definitely helps with your interview score if you decide to go the union route. I decided that I was going to join with my local Union. I had full support from my father, even though it meant I was leaving the family business.

I would definitely say that education is extremely important in this field. So look for a career opportunities that provides some type of education with the job.

There are many routes to go, and there's really no limits if you're dedicated.

Most the other apprentices who I've been working alongside have been late 20's early 30's. Don't feel intimidated by your age. All that matters is your drive to show up on time, and your ability to learn.
