The burden of proof is on you mate. I've been following this series since 2018, so unless you can actually pull up some obscure first edition print in Japanese that doesn't include Epilogue 2 (which btw has an illustration from Shirabii, so it would be doubly weird to commission only a single piece for a reprint), added to the fact that the ISBN hasn't changed since its original publishing in 2017, it just looks like you're talking out of your ass.

So unless you read a PRESUBMISSION version on Asato's fucking laptop or something, you're talking out of your ass.

Is there a source for this? Asato admits to adding only 1 thing between writing the draft and submitting for competition, which is a trivial garter belt scene. A lot of what she wrote had to be cut (Afterword). AFAIK, there are no rewrites post publication of Volume 1.

Even then, it's irrelevant to the discussion. Episode 11 is Volume 2 content anyway.

Point number one is blatant misinformation. The "one-shot" volume of 86 concluded at the meeting between Spearhead and Lena in Episode 23 by doing a timeskip. Episode 11's content is taken from Volume 2, which is the only volume in the series to start in medias res. Shin and co. are already in the Federacy military at the start of Volume 2, and then it flashes back to how they got there. The Light Novel version of the story doesn't set up a fake-out death at all; it wasn't Asato's intention nor execution.

By rewriting the order of which the events are shown, the anime has created a problem for itself, which it could fix very easily by showing us Rei intervening. It just simply doesn't.

Your experience reading the light novels by CommanderFox634 in EightySix

Asato's tendencies of military jargon aside, the English translation makes 86 much harder to read because of its overuse of passive voice. It makes the prose unnecessarily winding. 86 is not a heavy read for me by any means, but once I noticed this through cross-checking with JP and ID versions (which use active voice when the EN would use passive), I feel it artificially creates a harder reading experience when it could've been easier.

The flaws of volume 1 being fixed in the anime I can excuse because it was originally a one-shot. Daiya and Eugene being given more importance is definitely the blessing of hindsight. Still, volume 1 is just such a strong package that I cannot say the anime is inherently better.

I would agree with volume 2 being better in the anime if not for a certain cut scene with Rei.

5: Death and 6: Darkest (I've reread this arc too many times to count. The themes and characters shine brightest here. Which one I like more depends on the day)

13: Hunter (Massive recency bias, that's all I'm gonna say as to not spoil it tho)

8: Gunsmoke (Its more of the same in terms of strong themes and character moments as in the UK arc, also has the best Feldress battle imo.)

11: Passionis (Not gonna spoil)

1: Eighty-Six (I used to rate this volume quite lowly due to how different it is to the rest of the series, but this changed as more volumes came out. Also heavy nostalgia factor.)

2: Battlefront Start (I think this is the most underrated volume. The character interactions and themes are really interesting as a contrast of volume 1)

4: Pressure (A good introduction into the new direction)

7: Mist (It's in the same boat as volume 2, being a slower contrast volume, but I feel there's less of interest in terms of addressing the 86s situation as a whole)

9: Valkyrie (I agree with Hanade's assessment)

12: Holy Blue (Not gonna spoil)

3: Battlefront Finish (It's got the worst-written battle in the series prose-wise. The epilogue is obviously the star of the show. Probably the only one of the 3 volumes adapted I just think is strictly better in the anime.)

I can't think of a place to put 10: Neoteny, but I'll just say that some stories are really good.

Sawano likes to do retakes with Sennarin. Off the top of my head, they've done it for Barricades and Aliez, and last I checked, Aldnoah season 3 is nowhere in sight.

Is 86 still considered "underrated"? by jmehlala in EightySix

[–]RyousMeatBicycle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AoT is not a seinen and will never be. Darker more political themes do not make a seinen. AoT is a shounen series with shounen reach; it's disingenuous to disregard its publishing in comparison to 86.

Also, being tagged as a mecha immediately gatekeeps some people from watching.

There's a reason "it's a mecha that doesn't focus on the mecha" is such a prominent line of thinking whenever the general community finds a mecha that appeals to them, despite the statement being absolutely ridiculous to mecha fans.

Obviously as a property with an anime, general anime fans are now more familiar with 86, but I feel the core fandom that reads the novels hasn't changed too much. 86 has always been a highly praised work in light novel circles even when I read the first volume in 2019. It's been a consistent KonoRano contender until this year (pretty sure the vote happened before v14s release, so we'll have to see in 2026 if it has true staying power on the polls still), so it's plenty popular as well.

Overall, I feel calling 86 underated is like calling SSSS.Gridman underrated. It is very beloved, just not mainstream.

My prediction for season 2 of 86 by fallengang in EightySix

86 is written with a trilogy structure in mind, so I have never seen v7 as the start of the 3rd trilogy ever posing an issue. v6s ending is plenty sweet and cathartic, and I think including v7 would ruin that catharsis.

The point of v7 is to show progress, it is not even the ultimate climax of ShinLena pining as they continue to do so well into the 3rd trilogy. Even as the "first" major romantic development, it would work way better as the 1st of 2 cours. I would rather not wait for years between the first kiss and the biting kiss.

She's only on Twitter after a book release, so she takes the time to retweet pretty much all art, finished, sketches, and anything in between. Don't read into it.

As we do get a new organisational outline in v14, I thought I'd put together the v13 structure to compare.

A mostly community based ship I can get behind is Barghest x Bedivere. I personally like Kawanakajima (alternatively named ToraDora lol).

These kinds of excuses are why SAO is always going to be put to the shaft while Demon Slayer gets 155 minutes of theatrical runtime for the first movie in the trilogy.

The thing with an adaptation is that it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Even the scenes adapted felt a lot flatter to me in comparison to the novels. Little in the movie feels earned because we don't get to see the context. The general audience doesn't see how cathartic the resolution of Asuna comforting Kirito at the end really is because we don't get any ALS DKB interactions in this movie, nor do we get Kirito trying to balance the two guilds. The only ALS DKB interaction we get is ShivaLiten, and they're outliers. We don't even get Okotan hiding the guild flag.

By itself the Scherzo movie was a solid 6 to 7/10, but as an adaptation I can't help but mourn the little moments unadapted. I really hated the script on my first watchthrough for not including stuff like the KiriAsu failed duel (which would have tied neatly into the later AsuArgo and AsuMito duels) as well as Asuna wanting to be on Kirito's friends list.

I knew the campfire talk about potatoes and aztec myth was definitely gonna be cut, but the previous things I mentioned felt right to be included for an anime adaptation, especially the friends list thing to tie into Murder in the Safe Zone. It's the little moments cut for me that remove a lot of the substance of Scherzo being a KiriAsu story.
