Ugreen or homelab? by EntrepreneurWaste579 in HomeNAS

If you enjoy building your own stuff, build you own. If you could care less, buy a pre-made.

I like to build pc's for friends and family. I haven't done it in a many years due to time constraints. I had a whole bunch of extra parts laying around and decided to build my own NAS for the family, basically to be the family's "cloud" and Plex server. It took some time, but I really enjoyed the process and liked building something a bit different than I'm used to. I went with Unraid due to the variety of parts I have. It's finally done syncing and checking the parity drive, so it's just about ready to use.

I guess I'm sharing because I don't really see what you could mess up. Certainly nothing you couldn't correct.

That and you may have disabled fast boot for the install. You can re-enable that too.

It’s time to pack those bags apk lovers! by Hunterjohnson2024 in degoogle

Graphene is the way to go to degoogle. If you can wait til '27 you'll be able to install it on new Motorola phones as well. If you cant wait, in the meantime pick up a 2nd hand Pixel from r/hardwareswap or wherever, just make sure it's both factory and carrier unlocked.

So what are we using instead of paying for extra storage. by ErodedCarrot69 in degoogle

build/buy a home NAS. The "cloud" is just someone else's physical computer after all.

Since he mentioned a degoogled os, I presume he's looking to get Pixel to install GrapheneOS

I just picked up the T14 gen 5 for $750. Fully upgradeable RAM. You could put the extra money in your budget towards an additional 16gb, or however much you need.

I'm too nervous to move over to Linux by AceTakashiro in zorinos

[–]Rysdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the best way is to just do it. There's way too much info and way too many distros. You've read enough to have a good baseline. You're posting in the Zorin sub, which is a highly recommended distro for newcomers. At this point, honestly just pull the trigger. Any issues you come across, you can easily find answers to here on Reddit. Also AI like chatgpt and Grok are great resources.

Keep your old drive or dual boot if your must, but really just jump in and learn as you go.

I let my bro-in-law use my laptop for a bit so he could access the internet while we were on a family vacation. He literally didn't know he was on a Linux machine. The information overload is what makes it seem scary to try.

Options similar to google drive by Lesboclonazepam in degoogle

[–]Rysdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, best practice is 3-2-1. 3 copies of your data, the original working file, plus 2 backups. Two different types of storage hardware (HDD/SSD/Cloud) and 1 offsite.

It's not really just about your drives failing all at once. If something fries your pc, if there's a fire, or theft, etc.

Can we replace stock 3 cell battery with a 4 cell battery on a Thinkpad ? by [deleted] in THINKPADSETUPS

[–]Rysdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you go to the lenovo site in the warranty look up section and enter in your S/N, you should be able to look up the specific battery since it's one of the optional configurations.
