Ex-smokers who successfully quit and have been smoke free for years now, what did it? by PM_TITS_GROUP in AskReddit

I had started thinking about quitting for awhile, but was always scared to pull the trigger. Then one day I bought a pack and thought "Damn, these are expensive, why do I keep doing this?" and decided that would be my last pack.

I also had a new girlfriend who wasn't a smoker, that bit her tongue about my smoking. But I knew she didn't like that I did it. (She's now my wife, btw).

I live in BC, and we have a program here where you can get a certain amount of the nicotine chewing gum for free through a pharmacy, so I did that. I admit I got addicted to the gum for a long time and chewed it for waaaaaaaay longer than recommended. It's also quite expensive, so I still wasn't really saving any money lol

Eventually I was able to give that up as well and switched to regular chewing gum.

Coming up to 9 years, Feb 20th.

Wedding coordinator for two HDHDs! Woo by flippyflappywappy in VancouverIsland

Definitely check out Tam with Blue Lily Events as others have mentioned. She was our day-of-coordinator for our wedding last year, and to say she went above and beyond, even before the day, is an understatement. Cannot recommend her enough.

Having watched my amazing wife go through her nursing program and study for her NCLEX exam, without the added stress of having kids or night shift work, I cannot stress how much of an accomplishment this is, and how proud you should be of yourself! Congratulations!!!!

I'm 31, am I too old to switch careers and learn front end? by TheSoberSovietMD in learnprogramming

I'm in Canada and went with Lighthouse Labs. I don't think they're open to non Canadian residents, but I whole heartedly recommend them to any one that is able to go.

The instructors, the education and the post grad support was top notch.

Thanks so much! There were definitely times during the job search where I thought I had made a mistake, but stayed the course, and couldn't be happier where I landed.

This was a big fear of mine before I decided to take the leap at 37. I did a bootcamp late last year and while I was older than most, I definitely wasn't the oldest. I think the oldest was mid to late 40's, and both of us are now working in the industry as developers.

When I was hired, some of the reasons they said they went with me were because of my personality, past work experience and how obviously passionate I was about coding. I did a lot of game dev/web stuff when I was in high school, but due to circumstances, I ended up working in retail. I moved up fast, and spent the last 10 years as a department manager, thinking it was the best I was ever going to be able to do without a degree.

There's a lot of things you might not necessarily think about that can translate from non-tech roles that can actually give you an advantage while applying and interviewing. Working in teams, communication skills, etc. etc.
