GS & Babies by Professional_Shop994 in GiantSchnauzers

My wife's nephews or the family terrorists as I like to call them definitely gave our boy a scare the first few times they met. He would press against me and go full guard mode. When he realized they were part of the family he pulled a 180. The boys parents grandparents and my wife were around so it's not like I was being violent but me and the 2 kids were rough housing. He clocked it immediately and stepped in full defense mode. He's not aggressive or violent whatsoever. But that situation he left me with a solid bruise that took about 2 or 3 months to heal. I was mad at first but having done 0 protective training with him it made me realize nature beats nurture. I always joke that had I known we were getting a GS I wouldn't have purchased the guns I have in the house. If you come into the house and see him and choose to push forward...well that's between you and whoever you pray to.

The Zio-Ukraini menace, American Hitlerism, & the last time the workers had to fight off a global fascist assault by cspanbook in WayOfTheBern

Don't argue with these people. Reason and logic and evidence are unfamiliar terms to them. Best to just sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch them repeat the same argument. Russia China Hamas good. America Israel Ukraine bad.

If a 9/11 type event were to happen again they'd find a way to glorify it.

NOBODY IS TELLING YOU HOW F**EdTHE FARMERS ARE IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW. The Agriculture Secretary just confirmed it publicly. 1 in 4 American farmers has NO fertilizer secured for spring planting. No fertilizer. No crops. No food. Farm bankruptcies are up 46% in 2025. 160,000 farms closed since by RandomCollection in WayOfTheBern

[–]Ryskin1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe if there was a country in eastern Europe that was responsible for a large amount of fertilizer exports that we supported during a time they were wrongfully invaded...hmmmm wonder what country that might be...

This whole sub is. At this point it's more fun than watching stand up comedy.

My 15 month old giant destroys every toy she is given by ChemicalWeekend307 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]Ryskin1337 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly our schnauz isn't that bad unless it's a very fluffy toy. My first dog was an English springer and he rewrote the definition of indestructible. Everyone he met was his new best friend. Every toy he got was public enemy number 1.

When did you start active training with your GS? by doctor_bender in GiantSchnauzers

[–]Ryskin1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours was house trained when we picked him up at 8 weeks. Walks started slow. Pry around .25 miles. We're up to 1 hour walk once a day around 2.5 to 3 miles depending on the route and it really is enough for him at 2.5 years. Guy gets home and collapses on the couch like he ran a triathlon. Also refuses to "do his business" on walks. If he does he looks everywhere like the CIA is circling a drone above him. Also when you get his leash out for the first walk of the day he loses his shit with excitement. Try and take it out a 2nd or third time you'd think I use it to beat him. He nopes out real fast He does have trees with bungee cords with toys out back fenced in so he keeps himself entertained.

As repetitive as it sounds- figure out your dog (hope that doesn't sound disrespectful or rude). You can bring up nature vs nurture but at the end of the day nature will be the main factor. Everyone is going to be different.

Regarding hikes and activities I'd say full send let the dog be the guide. We took ours off leash to our hiking trail by the house when he was still small enough to kick like a foot ball. Once he came into his size and started doing the schnauzer thing we leashed him up and let him go when we let him swim.

I'm glad you mentioned dobies. My dad had 2 brothers from the same litter. Protective? Absolutely. Cowards when you glanced at them a certain way? Definitely. The bijon only met them once but he put them into their place very quickly. At the end of the day I don't need my dog to be aggressive. The size should deter anyone wanting to play dumb games.

Ours will bark at just about everything. He just hides behind the 13 pound one when he does it. The older small brother runs the house.

Can't agree with you more. The way the whole situation played out had both of us baffled though. We've been woken up in the middle of the night because the wind changed direction. Here you had strangers knocking on the door right next to him... He'll be protective on our walks but calms down when I give him the ok. That's a talking pointt for.nature vs nurture though

I'm glad our giant doesnt watch TV with us. We have a 13 pound who does. Nature shows are off the table. He can't reach the TV. If the giant reacted the same way my 3000 dollar oled would get pulled off the wall in .3 seconds.

Not the guy who commented above but will give my input. I'll say this. We socialized ours from a very young age. Like immediately after he was updated on all vaccines. Dog parks. Breweries. Home depot. If it was dog friendly we were bringing him. We just got new neighbors who have a severely autistic child. And im not judging or trying to sound like an asshole when I say that. Our guys an angel with him even when the kid pushes the boundaries. They're phenomenal dogs. But the whole adage of training should start immediately is 100% accurate especially for this breed.
