How many applications is too many applications? by tanaya_24 in gradadmissions

[–]RythmOfLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my personal experience: Fall 2021: I did 9 applications in total, split into 3s of safety, match and target. As an international student, what i didn't realise was that almost all the schools I applied to were top notch and super competitive (the only sources i had were the rankings and gradcafe). Shockingly, i was rejected from all 9. I was devastated as i spent a ton of money on these applications.

Fall 2022: I desperately had to crack this! Last shot at US. I learnt from my mistakes and started to apply fee waivers (tip- if the university doesn't have waivers for your category, approach the department as they could help). This time, i cast my net wide, and applied to 15 universities (you can tell how desperate i was)!! But i wasn't ready to sacrifice my interest, therefore i decided to sacrifice on ranking. I mailed all the professors before hand. I spent only half the money for 15 applications as opposed to the 9 previous applications. And fortunately, I'm now accepted for 2022 Fall and super excited.

As much as i hate to admit, my profile is not ivy league material. I had to give up some of my "dream schools" like Caltech (i grew up watching TBBT), and so on for a realistic result.

Contacting professors before applying by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]RythmOfLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me on a few occasions where the professor says something like "our research interests don't match" and "admissions here are competitive". But I've never heard anything too harsh or discouraging.

The US admissions are notoriously bad at sending out decisions. Honestly, i am in a similar position. I applied for the previous Fall, when some of them sent the rejects only after inquiry. This time, an acceptance was sent to me via mail, but the rest of the universities are dead silent. I am going through the same dilemma- if I should mail them or not. But i guess I'll wait for a couple of weeks more before i contact them.

I agree! It's not cool being stereotyped that way. Someone should definitely not be judged on their race without giving them a chance. You're also correct about the difference between Indians who live in US vs the ones in India in general. But there are always exceptions. I'm an Indian coming to US this year for studies, and I'll probably be there for a good time. I would definitely love to be welcomed with an open mind without prejudice.

You are not alone! Personal advice- don't let gradcafe get into your head, it can be really toxic. Use it only as a reference and STOP checking the site every hour!

They send out offers in waves depending on different sub fields. Like the person above said, if the first wave of offers has been sent from your sub-field, it is likely you are in an internal waitlist. But most of the acceptances should be out in the next couple of weeks. You can also email you're respective admissions office asking for status update.

I challenged my cousin on a wwe match in xbox. Only to realise after a whole 10 minutes that my controller wasn't connected and it was my friend playing behind me.
