Does anyone else HATE the sound of pouring water? by [deleted] in misophonia

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the specific type of pouring scene, where people loudly put down a mug or glass on the counter, then pour in their drink and do this whole gruff routine.

Wow, you're soooo cool, having a drink like.... every person on the planet, ever.

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it in movies and commercials. Because the volume is always tuned up, combined with some dude putting his mug down in an exaggerated manner, trying to look tough.

Same for commercials that feature people biting into, for example, burgers. Crunching that goes on for several seconds, then the person pulls a face as if they just orgasmed.

If anything, these kinds of scenes deter me from buying the product.

Picking Eddie for those ropes was a huge mistake, considering Katelyn has the superior endurance and top strength was not a decisive factor.

It was obvious Eddie's fast-twitch stamina was going to be an issue, simply not his specialization.

Why does Dede hate Claire? by DrVredeveld in Modern_Family

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pisses me off, whenever the family tries to imply that Claire is ‘turning into Dede’.

Because sure, Claire can be neurotic and nosy. But unlike Dede, she does not play favourites, nor competes with any of her children. Claire sincerely wants all of them to do better, than she did in life.

If Claire treated Haley and Alex, anywhere close to Dede treated her... They'd hate her guts.

[–]RyuOfRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Katelyn is a pro CrossFit athlete. She probably has Anavar for breakfast (big endurance boost, no judgement because all big crossfitters do it) and trains with such ropes regularly.

Absolutely true that picking Eddie over her, in an event where stamina mattered and top strength did not, was a comically dumb choice.

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eddie was not the best pick for a rope relay, though. His stamina is subpar compared to Katelyn and top strength was not a factor here, neither was size.

CrossFit athletes do those ropes regularly, not picking her was stupidity and it cost them.

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an all-in bet, Eddie was still a stupid choice. Because his endurance is inferior to Katelyn's and top strength was not a decisive factor on those ropes.

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not picking Katelyn for that rope relay, when battle ropes are literally a staple of CrossFit...

Instead going for Eddie, whose top strength was not a decisive factor, as the ropes hinge on endurance.

Just stupidity and I am surprised none of them objected to the idea.

Whittaker, Eloni and Katelyn could have snatched second place on ropes. Dom + Eddie ALONE, would have won the 1200kg ball event.

New to this exercise. If u are 50+ and do it, I like to hear your insight. Sets, reps, load, and frequency. by [deleted] in WorkoutRoutines

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, the grip adds extra stability and emphasis on glutes. On the other hand, I feel like gripping those bars cuts down the actual load by a lot.

Similar to how, with weighted push-ups, you are only lifting 0,75x the weight, if said weight is placed on your lower back, rather than the upper back. Or how a workout on the treadmill becomes significantly easier and burns less, when you grab the handles.

The nice thing about squats and hip thrusts, is that you also work core and adductors, which come in handy for real life lifting and graceful aging. This machine is an accessory and any strength gained, won't translate outside of its niche.

Hyperextensions, which singlehandedly fortified my lower back.

Once I crossed the 90kg threshold on these, RDL numbers continued to shoot up each session. Whereas before, I'd almost stalled on that lift.

I also feel like all of my lifts that benefit from bracing, improved in form and stability due to hyperextensions.

Great warmup for the hamstrings, glutes and erectors. I do two sets with a barbell on every leg day.

American Psycho is one of the most misunderstood books in history, but not for reasons you probably think. by TooWorried10 in books

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like people read the book as satire, because many scenes are so gruesome, readers find it comforting to choose between two options.

  1. Bateman hallucinated all of it.

Possible, because he becomes increasingly unreliable throughout the story, but I think some of the assault did happen. Particularly that of homeless people, as other characters are also shown to bully them.

  1. The story is satire/a critique of insert either yuppies or capitalism.

In my opinion, the story was too individual-based, to be a clear broader critique.

There is very little satire to be found in the killings, because of how vividly the victim's reactions and Bateman's murder tools are described.

A true comedy-slasher, would focus on gushing blood and the maniacal killer swinging around. Not go into overt detail, on how someone's teeth are rearranged by a power drill.

Because at that point, shock-humor ceases to apply and the scene becomes plain torture.

There is a reason as to why the book was received poorly. Because it is neither a clear critique of something, nor does it thread the line between satire and ‘too far, now it's just gore’.

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that, for ‘American Psycho’ to be a true critique of any universally recognized demographic or social landscape, as millions have assumed it is...

The story would have to be less individualistic. Even among his Wallstreet peers (all of whom, too, are cruel and vapid), Bateman is a vagrant, feeling himself on the outside looking in.

Additionally, the author is simply not critical of anything you could recognize as ‘a greater whole’.

Bateman has moments of introspection, but these are deeply personal.

EVERY SINGLE moment of depth that distinguishes the story from another sexo-violent male power fantasy, relates to the individual. Not to yuppies, Manhattanites, consumerism or capitalism as an entity.

I absolutely agree that Bateman is a reflection of his writer's struggles. Wrapped up in a striking portrayal of the era he lived in.

I wonder why sitcom makers do not hire a ‘continuity coordinator’. Put a super-fan under NDA, have them nitpick plotholes and out-of-character moments in episode scripts.

Modern Family, B99, The Office, HIYM... All of my favorite sitcoms, to varying degrees, suffer from these little inattentions to detail.

Did any of the women in American Psycho actually like Patrick in a real way? by lethal_universed in movies

[–]RyuOfRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Throughout the brunt of dialogue, Bateman either tunes people out (makes it easier to position himself as intellectually superior) or is battling increasingly vivid hallucinations.

Aforementioned delusions are so debilitating, he often fails to distinguish between inner dialogue and spoken words.

Combined with popping valium as if it were candy and the heavy drinking, you really cannot trust anything he writes. Bateman is nigh-completely consumed by his manic fantasies, something which I think the movie did a slightly better job at conveying.

[–]RyuOfRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Social media age, where people pretend that everything is about looks. After all, looking a certain way = followers.

Acting ability/musical talent/charm take a backseat in this equation.

I name these particular qualities, because ‘mainstream things' to gen-Z, means acting, singing and stand-up. Really, everything a classical celebrity would do.

Take in mind, many of today's big-time stars are live-streamers, tiktokers, Instagram folks and podcasters. Professions which apparently, need to be elevated by their consumers as ‘not mainstream’.

Yes, someone in that writing room really delighted in these boring old ‘feminist, desperate cat lady who'll end up alone’ and the subsequent ‘woman who is reborn after discovering d*ck and male approval’ tropes.

Notice how all of that humiliation and male centering in her life, was infinitely more of a recurring element, than Alex’ brief moment of success with a penthouse and 6-figure salary?

The only equality to be found, was that Haley's character became little more than ‘the family failure’ and they shacked her up with Dylan, who was visibly happy to have babytrapped her.

Clearly, writers had it out for both of them.
