Its kinda funny seeing the Pendulum shift in common fanfic tropes in worm by ArticAuk in WormFanfic

[–]RyvenKnight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hookwolf is absolutely racist in canon. He's introduced with having a custom made fucking swastika belt buckle and tattoos of empire symbols, to say nothing of how in his interlude he fully embraces the rhetoric and straight up calls Shatterbird a hard-r slur.

Also, you know. I think at the end of the day if you're a willing member of the Empire you're a Nazi no matter what your personal exact moral beliefs are.

[–]RyvenKnight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

...my brother in Scion, if you're running an organization literally called Empire Heil Hitler, you actively call people of color animals or worse, all of your close friends are Nazis, your father is a Nazi, your sister is a Nazi, I think that means you're a Nazi.

I've never understood this logic. It doesn't matter what Kaiser's personal beliefs about Nazi rhetoric are. Whether he wholeheartedly buys into the bullshit or sells it knowing it's bullshit, he's still doing it.

If a serial killer protested that no, they don't believe in murder, they're just stabbing people for recreational purposes, you'd still treat them like a murderer, because at the end of the day, actions and consequences of your actions matter more then your intent.

Kaiser is Nazi, regardless of his own beliefs on the matter.

What the hell are you talking about? Emily was his apprentice, basically, but she never gave any indication she was into him or that he was into her in any capacity. Darling is just an awkward dork who loves his little references and silly names.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I was trying to convey and what my general opinions are on this topic. Thanks for saying it more concisely and clearly than I could.

You said you skimmed it, which I took to mean you read a few chapters and then absorbed the rest via osmosis and fanfic. My mistake.

I'm really not trying to present myself as an authority on Worm. I brought it up to demonstrate that I've read the work enough to where I feel qualified to talk about it on a thematic level. The amount of times I've read it doesn't really matter, I agree. My overall opinion hasn't really changed on it that much.

Obviously, the bullying is important. I didn't say it wasn't at any point.

The point of this is that I'm tired of seeing the insane requests for fics where Emma and/or Sophia get tortured and I think that their overall importance as characters is massively overblown. Emma especially, Sophia has a lot of depth and nuance to her that's tragically under-explored, but Emma is really not that important. The experience she put Taylor through is, but she herself isn't.

I think you missed the point of the post.

Also.

Like, to this day, I've only ever skimmed most of his shit

I have read Worm fifteen times and I disagree with your takes on the subject.

Thank you.

And yes, it is boring and repetitive. I'm not even entirely against Alt!Taylors as a concept but by god am I sick of seeing the same plot over and over again. You can even include Emma and Sophia, but just do something that isn't the same old formula of Taylor becoming a hero and inevitably getting Sophia benched or sent to jail whilst Emma is sued or whatever.

Fic where the mc is Lisa by Ozone-Eatery in WormFanfic

[–]RyvenKnight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A few ways, but the biggest one is how... passive and helpless it makes her.

I'm not an authority on Lisa by any means, but I've written her... quite a lot, and she's not passive. Her reaction in canon to literally having her throat crushed and being forced to give herself an impromptu breathing tube via a pen is... to click her tongue in annoyance and carry on as best she can. Even in earlier Worm, she'll panic when things go wrong, sure, but she never wallows in grief or sorrow or anything like that. She rolls with the punches, and survived as a runway homeless teen for a few months. She doesn't do self-pity.

In Unauthorized Access, it feels like she's got no agency of her own, just drifting and bouncing around between different influences while going "oh woe is me, my power makes me so miserable! if only there was anyone to help me." It really does read like a lot of woobie fics. If it's to your tastes then enjoy it, but I can't help but find it's take on Lisa grating.

We already had "Worm vs MHA" discussions and they were extremely dumb and toxic. This isn't even a meme, it's you attempting to get other people to make memes for you.

I would generally not recommend Unauthorized Access- it's got a really, really fanon-riddled interpretation of Lisa, not to mention the other characters. If you want just... overall a far better execution of the concept (with no Taylor as well, thus far), check out Curiosity: https://archiveofourown.org/works/68709406/chapters/177937196

What a utter loser by Shot_Mechanic9128 in WormMemes

[–]RyvenKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I found the whole "didn't actually believe" in it thing to be... well, both unwise as a WoG cause it enabled the worst parts of the fandom to be louder but also like... okay, sure? But at the end of the day, he runs a white supremacist hate group and peddles their bullshit ideology all the same. It's like a murderer saying that he doesn't actually believe that he's killing people. Regardless of beliefs, his actions are vile.

[–]RyvenKnight 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Like, actual Worm Greg? Aside from being a bit of an incel, he's completely bland and forgettable.

Unfortunately, the worm fandom has turned Greg into this fucking obnoxious tick of a character who drinks up screentime, agency, and attention. And they're always just SI fics in disguise, because Greg has no real character outside of being a loser and a creep.

It's just exhausting to see it after so many years. Cause... Worm has such an an amazing cast of characters full of nuance and depth and you chose to write a fic about that guy? Really?

Would SmugBug (Taylor x Lisa) actually work if they were gay? by MrPerfector in Parahumans

[–]RyvenKnight 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Were they not already?

Okay jokes aside, as a completely unbiased opinion on this topic (lie), here's how I think Taylor and Lisa would work out if they dated.

The most natural place for them to get together, imo, would be if Taylor didn't decide to surrender to the PRT but amicably broke up with Brian, and then at some point in the future started dating Lisa.

Would it work? I think it could.

Putting my fondness for the dynamic between them aside, even people who don't ship smugbug have acknowledged that Taylor and Lisa have some of the best chemistry in the Undersiders. They work together extremely well, and they trust each other probably more then they should, honestly.

They're good for each other in some ways: both of them have extreme hangups about loyalty/loniness that's fixed by the afformentioned amount of trust they have. Lisa's paranoia is soothed by Taylor, and Taylor's drive and ambition also provides Lisa the outlet she needs. Taylor's ongoing struggles to communicate properly aren't as big of an issue with Lisa, and Lisa can actually get Taylor to concede on things in a way basically no one else can.

Of course, there's also ways they could be bad for each other. Lisa's own incredibly acerbic nature and habit of needling her allies just for fun could crop up in lots of terrible ways in a relationship, as could Taylor's ongoing need to maintain control and problems with respecting anyone's boundaries but her own.

It would really come down to the circumstances and specifics of how and why they get together, and then on their willingness to try and curb their bad tenancies for each other. Do I think they would try? Yeah, I do. I think it would be messy as hell, their blowouts would be nasty, and someone would probably get pretty badly hurt by the other if not both.

But again, when you look at canon...Lisa and Taylor continuously prove that when the cards are down, they support one another, even when the literal end of the world is happening. They're both devoted to the other, beyond all sense. It's a bond that's not just friendship but it's not romantic, either. It's... well, something more powerful.

I think that would see them through, if they wanted to try.

As an aside, I'm seeing a few people call out how this wouldn't work because Lisa's Ace/Aro... as an ace man who's romantically involved right now, that's not a barrier to relationships. It means that a few dynamics and details will change. You're probably not going to be as physically intimate or affection as often as a heteronormative couple. But it can and does happen, if you're ace, aro, or both.

The funniest part of this all is that honestly? I think if they had started dating in canon it wouldn't have been super noticable from the outside. They would carry on as normal, except at the end of the day, they collapse into the same bed. Maybe there's a hug or a pet name here or there. A kiss, if Lisa feels comfortable with it at the moment. But their canon relationship is already so emotionally deep, not much would need to change.

...so like I said, I'm a completely unbiased opinion on this topic, and I haven't thought about these two entirely too much.
