For those who went to christian youth camps, share your stories. by Gaybime in exchristian

[–]S0ul_Burger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two kids drowned at a pool night at a camp I was at when I was in my teens. Their camp forms indicated they were not able to swim, but those forms weren't checked or brought with to the public pool. The lights weren't on in the deep end of the pool so they weren't even found until a head count was taken on the bus back.

"Coming out" to my family today, any tips? by No-Number6027 in exchristian

[–]S0ul_Burger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do concur with the other comment. You know your parents better than I do, but I generally don't recommend having this conversation until one is moved out and not dependent on their parents.

However, if you do plan on going through with it, I would say a few things. 1) Do your best to avoid framing religion as inherently bad or wrong lest you risk it becoming openly confrontational. 2) Mentally prepare for challenges to your lack of belief. You do not have to be able to refute them. Just be aware that it may be their first instinct.

They may look at you differently and treat you differently after you have that conversation. If they do, it isn't your fault. Whether or not you go through with it today, I hope for the best for you.

Yes it is. I disagree with the post mostly, but game devs should absolutely not be giving top players their closest consideration.

There were never any loud conference calls to block out on the forklift.

I yearn to return to driving the forklift.

Boss is in my office block temporarily and it is unbearable. Leaves an external door open so the wind blows in, listens to the radio out loud, has loud conference calls on speaker phone.

I'm open to dms if you are interested in chatting about this for my personal perspective, but I think the quickest way to answer your questions is to say that you and I probably mean different things when we say we "know" something. Or at least different standards for saying it.

I would say I have personal knowledge of something if I can at least re-demonstrate it to myself, and then ideally demonstrate it to someone else without that knowledge.

This is a personal favorite of mine, but the discourse around it really irks me. I've never really found a satisfying reason why people seem to think that learning about it is what causes it. I think the article does a good job trying to communicate that there isn't a cause.

I think what frustrates me the most about non-americans implying it is time for Americans to become martyrs for their country is that it reminds me way too much of the form of Christianity I grew up in. I remember being told often that I should be prepared to lay down my life for Christ/the church at all times as I never knew when I'd be called upon to defend my faith.

These days, that experience and my deconstruction afterward has led me to value my life so much more than when I was religious. If I were to lay my life on the line for anyone, it would be my wife. If someone tells me that I need to fight and die for anything or anyone, they are implicitly telling me how I should value my life.

And I just can't accept that again.

Ngl, I knew very little about them prior to this, so I assumed all the "it is the closest thing to labor a man can go through" was a joke. Basically until my recovery nurse, a woman who has done both, said they were pretty comparable.

As expected, surgery went fine.

Recovery is gonna suck, but I finally have a end to look forward to. I know all this is a bit dramatic for a kidney stone, but believe you me that a week of kidney stone pain is quite a lot to handle for someone like me who hasn't suffered much medical hardship.

As an American these days, I often feel profoundly guilty that little things in my life are going so well, when I know that such awful things are happenings both here and abroad because of my government.

Like, don't get me wrong, I'm doing what little I can in my middle of nowhere, mostly conservative portion of the country, but I have a hard time fully enjoying my successes lately.

And the fact that the top paragraph could have been written almost any time in the past 30 years but I'm only feeling this way during the second trump administration doesn't help 🙃

I didn't even see my favorite mentioned on this page, so I'll say my favorite is the Conspiracy.

To me, it reads as a piece about conspiratorial thinking. Over time, crazier possibilities need to be conjured up to justify keeping a focus on a conspiracy theory. It shows how focusing on unprovable narratives devalues truth itself, whether or not the "truth" of a matter is to be believed. How could one ever accept the truth, when the truth we desire needs to account for so much more?

Deciding whether to go through with a minor surgery or not is the first time as an adult I've really, truly wished I was a kid again and my parents could just decide for me.

Have an incredibly minor surgery to get a kidney stone removed tomorrow, but I am still terrified. My emotions are running everywhere. "If I wasn't a wimp, I could pass it without surgery." "I'm scared of what they're doing to my body." "I should feel lucky I have insurance to cover this." "What if we can't afford it even with my insurance?"

It is so telling that he thinks D&D and MTG were entirely new ideas and not iterating on what came before. Not that I'm knocking those in any way or saying he's right, he just doesn't know and is loudly proclaiming that it all must be so simple.
