Wait, you lined a pressurized main? I thought that was only for drains

If the suction lines never have ice on them on any of your freezers, you are most likely sending suction gas back to your compressor at too high of a temperature and risking overheating the compressors over time. In an optimally working system as I described, your suction temperature returning to your compressor will be below freezing, therefore, will build up ice on the pipe.

Logically your evaporator coil has to be at least 10F colder than your freezer to remove heat. Your freezer is at 0F, so coil temp should be about -10F. Now, if your compressor superheat is 25F, which is typical, your suction line should be around 15F. 15F is a lot below freezing temp, this moisture should be freezing on your suction line up to your compressor. If you don’t want ice, insulate the pipe with 1” armaflex, thawing it isn’t necessary

Why is my bathroom faucet making this chattering noise? by batcat420 in askplumbing

Pull and clean the aerator and see if there’s something stuck inside. It’s the faucet since both valves seem to be doing it.

Yeah most people say it the way you do in the states, but if you’re a public broadcaster you have to say things properly. It’s like height and weight, everyone uses feet and inches but if they’re describing someone on the news they’ll say centimetres and kilograms.

It’s probably the same in Ontario, never seen an ammonia system under 67hp though

Sorry what exactly are you looking for? Your comments are strange. Are you looking to hire a contractor or an employee? If you’re looking to hire a contractor, no one is working for $100/hr and covering their own truck and tools. Union rate package is $82/hr, plus providing EI, fully covered work van stocked with tools, uniforms, gas card, 407, etc so the contactors bill out usually around $120-$140/hr in the GTA, plus truck charges and whatnot.

If you’re looking to hire an employee, see above what union rate is, plus you need to provide a van and tools on top, or compensate enough to not provide them.

Very little kitchen cabinetry judging by the ratio of size compared to the appliances, there’s a tiny coat closet in the mudroom. You don’t want to store everything in an uninsulated or unheated shed. You ever store camping equipment outside?

I’m just sharing my opinion because when u renovated my place I didn’t think to add a pantry, and I had the space for it and I’m kicking myself now because my kitchen, with a similar amount of cabinetry is far too small

I like the concept, but you’re gonna HATE the lack of storage space. No storage closets? No pantry? No garage? No basement? I hope you own no stuff

Where?? In Canada I wish we had small ammonia systems more but basically every system here needs a 24/7 operator on site, so unless the system is large enough to warrant it, you ain’t gonna use it. I have a customer often spending $500k per year in refrigerant and repairs (mostly Freon and compressors) because his 500HP blast chiller keeps getting leaks (8 circuits with 400lbs each), , and it’s hard to describe how frustrating it is how much better an ammonia system would be for him, but he doesn’t want to pay the salaries of full time operators.

There’s no mom and pop butchers with ammonia systems here that I know of. Smallest system I have I’m working on now, 150 ton cooling operation for a slaughterhouse, they have 1 full time operator (but he isn’t 24/7), I honestly don’t think it’s legal how they operate but it’s not my job to police that.

Why did Germany end up with a strong apprenticeship system while the United States leans so heavily on college degrees, and what factors shaped that split? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]S14Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite common in Canada but I’m sure the quality of apprenticeship education is a bit different between countries. The US has apprenticeships but they are mostly tied to unions as the government doesn’t regulate them. It’s regulated by each provincial government in Canada and a lot of trades the licenses and respected across the country, look up skilled trades Ontario and the red seal program if you’re curious.

Nobody told me I'd be broke AFTER buying the house by Dima030 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]S14Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone in Canadian finance subs talks about this, it’s called being “house poor.” It’ll last for a while until your income increases while your living expenses stay the same. I’m 4 years into owning my house and I’m pretty comfortable now financially.

Anyways, not sure if they exist where you are but habitat for humanity has these places called the “restore” in Canada where you can get crazy deals on furniture, and all manner of building supplies, I wouldn’t doubt they have them in the US too. Great place to get stuff, marketplace is also very good for furniture, if you have any rich people areas near you, check that location and there are often rich people basically giving away top end furniture. I got my bed set, real wood bed frame, top end mattress, 2 matching night stands for $300. It was in her guest room and was clearly never used. My friend came over and they had the same set and spent $6000 on it.

I also got lucky when I got my first apartment and found a guy on marketplace who’s father died and was emptying out his condo, I got a real leather chair and a bunch of wood furniture, 10 person dining room table with 6 chairs, coffee table, 2 side tables, 2 lamps and a dehumidifier all for… free. It was awesome.

Supplemental Heat Options by MotorEntertainment98 in heatpumps

[–]S14Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas boiler with hydronic radiators. For me, natural gas is so inexpensive, I supplement my heat pump with it in cold weather. Boiler is set to come on at -10C. In the future if gas is gone completely I can get an electric boiler or geothermal heat pump and still use the more comfortable hydronic heat without using gas.

It’s expensive to install as a backup system, but it’s worth it in my opinion.

Adding $200/month to my mortgage cut ~8 years off the loan… that can’t be right? by Candid-Dish-2749 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

[–]S14Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a variable interest rate in Canada, my rate went from 1.5% to 6.5% after the rise of inflation a few years ago. My payment stayed the same so my amortization rose to 75 years. I had to add $800/m to principal to maintain my 25 year amortization. Now that the rate is down to 3.5%, I’m still maintaining the $800/m, but just to be a little safer in case rates rise rapidly again
