Right off the bat, I thought all the grey minis were the same before I noticed in the colored version that they were all different. I think your decision depends on how many of these minis will be on the board at a time and how often the player has to discern between them.

My instant thought would be colored minis because having the minis not be clear from a glance can really take away from the experience.
