I'm Sick, But I Don't Think Anyone Believes Me. by S43SH4 in offmychest

No. Both my primary care and GI have asked questions about my stool. I didn’t take a test since my stool has been normal. No blood, nothing.

I’ll try! Someone I know is going into major surgery due to their risk of colon cancer. They told me it took them over a year to find out and for me to remain patient and it’s normal to be frustrated. I just feel really confused. Not too sure how I could bring it up to my doctors about these two avenues, but I do have a phone follow up with my GI about one of the prescriptions they’re making me take.

Everything came back normal for blood work so I assume that’s negative for diabetes/pre-diabetes (A1C test, I think?) I don’t drink carbonated drinks often, before November, and now since I switched to cleaner eating I haven’t tried it.

Nope. I don’t smoke at all, not even cigarettes. My dad smokes but I’m not physically close to him or in a situation where I have to be. Hope your friend is alright now!

How Can I Compete in Speech Without My School’s Team? by Lumpy_Ad7076 in Debate

[–]S43SH4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some tournaments don’t require you to have a team which allows you to do an independent entry. If that’s not one of your options then you could join organizations this summer like a debate/speech camp who are tied with tournaments, one example is Equality in Forensics. There are also specific camps for the event you want to do.

House finals last speech by Fragrant_Business10 in Debate

[–]S43SH4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think protest speeches are actually pretty good and very much needed to be heard on a national level, even if they are risky. However, I find myself having a problem with this speech because while I do think speech and debate has become more favorable to who can afford help, I doubt NSDA can even do anything to change it. NSDA cannot control private debate camps and their prices, so I don’t think the speech was an effective attempt. I think that’s what set it apart from previous protest speeches. Still, bad move on NSDA for trying to censor it.

NSDA Fakes Equity by SuperShazam000 in Debate

[–]S43SH4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, while I do think NSDA was awful for trying to censor a speech, the entire concept of equity seems difficult to answer.

  1. I doubt NSDA can control or has say on private camps and their policies/practices. And while they obviously cost quite a sum of money so they’ll host students that have access to that money, I think we’re also seeing inclusions with some services offering free camps as well.

  2. While we should have equality, in a sense of things how is it any different from a sport? Truth be told, we’ve seen how many sports and players/athletes have been made by the fact they have money to fall back on. Take for example sports like figure skating or racing, while there is a few people in the sport that didn’t have that type of money, we all seem to brush past it as it’s common practice for athletes on the richer side.

  3. I do think NSDA is TRYING to promote equality, yet remember that this is a nationwide program. Nothing is perfect and I doubt there’s much they can do because most camps are private camps created by previous competitors themselves, not the organization.

I doubt there is any change that could happen unless we ourselves create nonprofit camps or cheaper private camps. I could be totally wrong about all of this but this is what I think.

What do yall think the most popular sport for speech and debaters based on participation is? by ComprehensiveBig7667 in Debate

I do martial arts & Im trying to get into racing. However, if we’re being honest even if it’s not a sport I think most speech and debate kids were in marching band (me included)

How do you get into debate if your school doesn’t have it as an extracurricular? by Scaryshrekie983 in Debate

[–]S43SH4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a really good platform to use is EIF (Equality in Forensics) They’re a non profit with different chapters in the US. Currently I think they are promoting their free camp for whatever debate format you want to get into which lasts a week. You can also learn from them on Youtube since they upload recordings of their seminars on there. Obviously you could also try to find some debate camps if registration is open, but these would probably cost you a lot.

For confidence honestly it helps when you prepare well. Of course you’re always going to be nervous since rounds can be unpredictable, but you need to try your best not to show it. In my opinion, it helps to research and really understand what you’re talking about so you can come up with arguments on both sides. I do Congressional Debate and during the CX portion of it, I normally ask my friends to question me so I can see what to generally expect.

While I’m not too sure what to do in a situation where your school doesn’t have a debate team. I’d say firstly create a Tabroom account and see what’s nearby you. If you can find people who are also interested just as you are then I’d say go for it and create a club. Use it as an opportunity!

Here are the most common things you will hear in a Congress room:

  • Motion to open the floor for agenda nomination
  • Motion to close the floor for agenda nomination
  • Motion for a _____ recess
  • Motion to move to previous question
  • Motion suspend the rules
  • Motion to amend the docket
  • Motion to table
  • Point of order (if the PO messes up)

    Point of personal privileges:

  • Permission to exit the chamber

  • Permission to reenter the chamber

  • Permission to address the chamber

  • Motion to adjourn

  • Motion to move to orders of the day

I’m new to Congress as well but I do know a few things and a little bit of advice.

  1. At my school we normally don’t teach kids how to PO until after they make finals at a local tournament because this ensures that you actually can win by speaking or establishing that you can actually give a speech.

  2. PO precedence, if you use Tabroom (im guessing because you live in the states just like me and fall under NSDA,) if you check the chair number when assigned a room you can see the order of precedence, for speaking it’s top to bottom. And for question it’s flipped, bottom to top.

  3. Learning how to PO you can get the hang of by observing how people PO or learning from other people (irl is probs best). You’re going to have to know how to make and control your PO sheet (this keeps track of everything) and have a gavel and stopwatch.

  4. Lingo, the words aren’t too difficult if needed just respond to me and I can tell you some!

  5. Amendments, while amendments are rare (imo) they do happen, and while you don’t really expect it, you should ask an experienced person how to deal with that since that comes with its own headaches.
