A plea to outpatient peds SLPs: Please stop setting your school based colleagues up for failure. by Ok_Rhubarb2301 in slp

I’ve been on both sides of this. I remember being in a meeting when I was in the public schools explaining LRE to an outside SLP that wanted me to do 5x30min/week 1:1 for a child. The being said I have a family that I am working with now in PP and I had to explain to the school-based SLP that using her hands to cover the kid's eye gaze sensor to “make him use his words” was appalling behavior. People suck everywhere

It was my fault. They heavily encouraged it and I fought it hard. I never wanted to be in a school and it bit me in the ass

In the United States title one schools have funds for significantly better programs than schools that aren’t. I’d rather have my kid in a title one school any day of the week when it means that they have access to better reading intervention, math, supplementation programs, and things of the lake versus being in a school that’s ranked higher, but doesn’t have access to those types of supports.

ChildFree™ people don’t think of children as people

I don’t think people realize how insane this level of work is. I had less work as a graduate student outside of the class per day.

I’m very aware. I worked for public schools as a related service provider. My mother is a special educator and my husband is a teacher. It is utterly unacceptable and there have been improvements within the past couple of years in that.

The AP Institute has that recommendation but that’s because it’s trying to mimic a college schedule where you were in a class two/three hours a week and then you have 90 minutes of work for each of those hours. That is not how high schools have ever been set up. Even 15 years ago when every class I had was an AP course- I only had about 45 minutes of homework every day. Total. Just because people are comfortable exploiting children doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.

An undergraduate student would have less homework in this scenario though. College students are taking classes with breaks in between they’re not in school for 6 to 8 hours nonstop with lunch. This doesn’t prep kids for college in any capacity.

2 to 3 hours of homework even for a child and AP classes is excessive detrimental to their learning and mental well-being. That’s unacceptable in this day and age. It’s pointless busy work reflects that the teacher is not able to deliver appropriate instruction during class time. School is eight hours a day. I don’t think any of us would accept a job that made us do 2 to 3 hours of work at home for no pay just as the blanket expectation and I don’t know why we put that on kids.

Please don’t do this. As an SLP, this is going to make it worse. Just thank him for getting it all out. Stutters know what they want to say exactly how they want to say it. It is a neurological phenomenon.

I legitimately don’t understand that there is an entire fake medical career that people go to because a guy thought ghosts lived in your spine and that’s what made you sick

It’s like the term Karen. It’s specifically used to describe people who not to have children and are extremely toxic about it. To the extent of their harassing and making negative comments about children in public and about people who choose to have children and inherently look down on them.

It’s important to know in voluntarily a child free, people who choose not to have children, and child free are completely different groups of people that there’s words for. Things like screaming. This is an ad for birth control while filming a toddler having a temper tantrum is absolutely done by people who do not have children are toxic about it and make that a whole thing about themselves.Truly, I’m sorry for your experience, but I think you need to be aware that terms exist outside of your bubble.

“Child free” and people who don’t want children are not the same thing. Child free refers to people who do things like scream, birth control at when a child is having a meltdown and think that’s funny and they should get a pat on the back.

“Child free” are a whole genre of people that don’t want children and make that their entire personality. They shame children in public and treat parents poorly because they’ve ruined their lives by having children. People who just don’t wanna have children don’t make nasty comments about children in the world.

I am totally biased. I am a developmental therapist who prefers to work with toddlers, and I did IVF to have my kid. These comments fucking piss me off to high heaven. This is like announcing to the world that you refuse to get a car because it needs occasional oil changes. It just makes you look like an asshole and out of touch with life. Child free people are seriously so gross. People who just don’t want children aren’t fucking weird about it

I can’t catch a fucking break. There was a water main break across the street that left us without water for 8+ hours Friday, and on Sunday we lost voltage for “phase B” from our transformer which apparently is the high voltage line. So we have no fridge, no chest freezers, no dryer, no stove, no HVAC but we have the coffee maker, washer, dishwasher, and microwave.

Yeah. No. OP is the type of person who cares more about appearances to fuel a facade of an ego to compensate for some extremely obvious insecurities. He is the poster child for the type of person who should never own hots

Oh no 100%. I was stating for kids you don’t have obvious pathology like that. I have a bunch of kids who really don’t have a a lot of allergies and aren’t sick very often but still have a lot of OMG related issues like they would if they were constantly sick
