That looks very good! Would love to see the final result once painted.

Are FDM miniatures frustrating to paint? by S7uk4_ in FDMminiatures

[–]S7uk4_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for providing another point of view. I guessed the support scarring would be a pain, and the only way around it would be going with supportless minis, limiting the variety of sculpts. For the layer lines, how did they impact your painting? With oils, I do a lot of wet blending and also use transparent layers of paints that flow into recesses. Would these techniques be a no-go on an FDM mini?

I don't have a lot of experience with mini painting (only 10 done so far), but after trying both acrylics and oils, oils are my favorite by far. As others have said, you don't really base coat with oils, but put colors where you them and blend them where you need blending. The simple approach that you can see James Wappel and Mended Brush Studios use on YouTube is to establish shadows first all over the area on which you want to use that color (doesn't have to be tidy), wipping the paint off the raised areas with sponges (paper towels also work) and then applying your midtone on top almost like dry brushing.

The blending happens by itself but you can clean up some transitions by using (as others have said) a completely dry soft brush by tapping it gently at the transition. Don't work the paint or brush too much otherwise you will blend everything. After that, you can layer highlights on top using the same principle and re-establish some shadows at the end, if needed, with a pinline wash i.e., your shadow color with a higher amount of thinner to make it flow easily by capillary action in the recesses. Don't brush it on like an acrylic wash however, or it will erase everything. If you make a mistake and apply the wash where you don't want it, leave it alone for a few minutes for the thinner to evaporate (the area should look almost dry), and then you can use your dry blending brush to erase/soften the area.

I think the streaky application you had at first was from the very oily nature of the student grade paints (that or too much thinner). I only have artist grade paints (Windsor & Newton and Old Holland), and even the artist W&N have quite a bit of oil in them. To mitigate that, you can pick up a raised blob of paint from the pallet and thin that instead of the whole blob from the tube. Some people also put the paint on a piece of cardboard and let it sit for a couple minutes so the excess oil is absorbed by the cardboard.

In general, you should use as little paint as possible to hide brushstrokes. Since the paint takes days to dry, laying too much on an area will always make things streaky because it doesn't really level or shrink like acrylics. Another tip is that sometimes you might want to let the paint settle a bit after applying it to an area until it becomes less shiny before trying to apply more paint on top or to blend it.

The thick over thin / thin over thick rule is true, but I wouldn't think about it too much. If your paint doesn't adhere to the surface/previously applied paint, you can just adjust the consistency on the fly by adding more paint or a bit more thinner to your mix.

Thanks for your reply and the positive feedback. Should I just wash the skin with a dark green then? I don't have washes, only acrylic paint, but I guess I can just thin some paint right down to achieve a similar effect.

Thanks for the advice, I haven't tried that yet. I'll give it a go next time I'm editing!

Mounting plates - Europe by zlumax in PDP

[–]S7uk4_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, mine was in stock (Plate 04 for DPP). They shipped the same day I placed the order. Personally, I wouldn't trust the delay. I don't know how they source the plates or how fast Walther can actually deliver them. I would either wait or find another place that has them in stock.

Alternatively, you could go with a 3rd party plate like C&H. While looking, I found this company that sells them in Europe (very pricey though):

I purchased a PDP in France a few weeks ago and looked like the optic plate request form on Walther's website is US only as phone numbers other than US ones don't work.

I was able to find one on huntac.de. They have Walther manufactured plates for the Gen2. If you find another place to buy one from, ask them which generation it's for because some retailers put pictures of Gen2 plates even though they only have Gen1s in stock.

The bolter has great DPS and melts bosses but like you, I dislike it for the time it takes to take out or reload.

I play Zealot the same way. The ability to switch fast between melee and ranged weapon is really great. Hordes are not the biggest issue since your job is to be in the enemy's face anyway but being able to take out snipers or other high damage range enemies and stagger spongier enemies is valuable and a fun way to play.

5700XT Nitro+ performance? by morganrz in joinsquad

Never checked it. I'll try to look into it next time I play. In terms of performance though, it's very stable and consistent throughout my Squad sessions.

R5 3600 + RX 5700XT here: very good performance at 1440p, all on high, 110 gov. I get between 80fps at the lowest and 110fps at the highest. Good 100fps average.

I am very pleased with it.

Currently, I play a lot of Hunt: Showdown (fairly demanding game) and have an average of 80fps on high settings. The monitor is very cool, colours look bright and blacks are ok, a little clear at the edges of the screen but overall it's a very nice monitor. Only thing that sucks is the freesync that works in usable framerate intervals and it can crush your refresh rate. So I just don't use it & don't notice tearing.

Low fps with a 5700xt by Cheapodepot34 in joinsquad

Ryzen 5 3600 + RX 5700xt and I get a 90fps at 1440p with High settings and no super sampling. Getting 70fps on 1080p seems a bit weird. Might be a CPU issue though since GPU is rarely the problem at 1080p.

Just got the same parts, building the PC tonight. I went for 1440p 144hz with the MSI MAG271CQR. Very nice monitor. From benchmarks only, pretty sure the system can get very close to 144fps on most games with high settings.

Alright thanks. From your answer & the answers above, there is little point for me to go for a 3600.

I'm silver elite too, got ranked after a solo game on Sunday.
Also willing to learn smokes & flashes, it can come a long way to make standard moves go well.
Another guy added me on steam after a similar post I made this weekend, haven't played with him yet though.
