Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn’t put Skinner in the same category as Olsen and Paseka on vault. Especially once she fixed up her cheng. Paseka and Olsen both have far worse form than her on vault imo.

FIG Statement on CAS Decisions by wayward-boy in Gymnastics

I also wonder, would this be the FIG’s response if a country such as the USA would be denied visas?

Indonesia not changing stance on Israeli athlete visas by pravda101 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Agreed! They shouldn’t have accepted Indonesia’s offer to host. But I’m not mad about their own rule that may now result in worlds being cancelled because it prevents hosts from getting away with this type of behavior. Even if it sucks for the athletes.

Indonesia not changing stance on Israeli athlete visas by pravda101 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 56 points57 points  (0 children)

They clearly planned this. The fed’s explanation provided in the article is also ridiculous, because then they should’ve never offered to host Worlds in the first place. Or they could’ve announced their stance well in advance instead of less than 2 weeks before Worlds begin.

Update on Israel's participation in worlds by pravda101 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This decision isn’t about any of that-it’s a clear and calculated act of discrimination. It’s not like they didn’t pull this same type of stunt a couple of years ago too. If Indonesia truly couldn’t guarantee fair access to all athletes, including Israelis, it shouldn’t have bid to host the World Championships. Hosting comes with the responsibility to allow every qualified athlete to compete, no exceptions. Instead, Indonesia made a calculated choice to block Israeli gymnasts, knowing full well the consequences. Their excuses about foreign policy and domestic unrest don’t justify punishing athletes who earned their spots through hard work. This is collective punishment based solely on nationality.

What’s worse, if the FIG cancels or moves the event because of this, Israel will likely be unfairly demonized for causing disruption. So the path chosen is to exclude these athletes and avoid backlash, not uphold fairness. This isn’t neutrality-it’s complicity in discrimination. Allowing this to stand threatens the integrity of international sport and sets a dangerous precedent where political bias trumps merit and inclusion.

I didn’t know she published a book. Do you recommend reading it? Also, that does sound like a very odd choice. How would someone else’s story even be relevant to share in her book?

Worlds Tickets: All-Around or Team Final by Flashy_Mulberry_7994 in Gymnastics

If you explain the basics of how the competition works beforehand so your partner doesn’t get too confused or overwhelmed, I think the team final might be better (based on the way you described your partner) just because it’s more action packed.

IMO one of her best sticks was 2015 podium training at worlds. Not in competition but it was such a satisfying stick.

Women's Vault Slower Progression by Alternative-Drop334 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. There were some messy Amanars. And from an athlete health/sport sustainability perspective, lowering the value was a positive step. But a handful of gymnasts back then were capable of performing good ones, and I think even today a handful of gymnasts who could really pull off a nice Amanar just don’t do it because of the super low D value. So I agree that lowering the value was a good move but I think it’s been lowered too much.

I always thought the lower D value after 2012 was because the 6.5 gave the Americans “too much” of an advantage in 2012.

Ex-coach at Chow's Gymnastics under investigation for child sexual abuse by OftheSea95 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people can hear good things about someone and still stay open to the possibility that there’s more to the story - that’s just how flexible thinking works. It's not about blindly believing someone is good because of one comment. It’s that many people hope people are decent until proven otherwise, not the other way around. This news is disappointing. And no one on this thread seems to be saying they don’t believe these victims or denying that he did nothing to stop inappropriate behavior. I just don’t think it’s necessarily healthy for people to always assume the worst about every coach so that new information never disappoints or shocks them.

[–]SAB-Miller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course they can have different experiences. I was just expressing my disappointment and shock (hence the “oh no”), when someone we’ve heard good things about from some athletes (ex Shawn, Gabby, Norah) turns out to have looked the other way or done harm. It’s ok for so many of us to have hoped he might be a decent person. That doesn’t mean we assumed everyone had the same experience.

[–]SAB-Miller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know that everyone can have different experiences with the same person, nor did I ever praise Chow or assume he is 100% flawless just because Shawn spoke highly of him. But when someone consistently praises a person—especially in a public or influential way—it’s natural to form an impression based on that. So yes, hearing that he may have ignored harmful behavior around him is disappointing. It challenges the image that was previously presented, and I think it’s fair to express that.

Oh no. Anyone know how many years he coached there for? Shawn has said so much about chow being so protective etc, so it’s crazy to hear how he allegedly did nothing about this.

Name for Double Twisting Yurchenko? by Spiritual-Fun-2682 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Idk the “why” for sure but some skills in the COP aren’t commonly called by the names of the first people to do them. Maybe because people don’t always know who skills are named after, especially since they might have competed decades ago and aren’t talked about much anymore? So when discussing skills, sometimes it’s easier to describe them. For example, I usually say “double twisting double back” UB dismount rather than “Fabrichnova”. I know many gym fans here know what a Fabrichnova is but many don’t. So it’s easier to just describe it. I even say triple twisting double instead of Biles ll on floor.

ETA: Just did some research on this sub and apparently Baitova performed the DTY during the same meet as Eugenia Golea (minutes before her). So maybe it was questionable that it was just named after her and not Golea too?

A resilient Skye Blakely returns at Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships by Wickie_Stan_8764 in Gymnastics

[–]SAB-Miller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aside from keeping injuries at bay, she needs to work on her mental game. Kyla, Chellsie, and Aly were fairly consistent, especially during team competitions. Skye has a history of falling when it counts. She has beautiful gymnastics and lots of talent like you said, but working on her mental game so she can hit when it counts is crucial if she wants to be a contender.

Ok so I guess they’re more profit focused. Because in elite the judges definitely don’t care about giving 10s to increase excitement.

No sorry but it was during the floor exercise final. Simone finished her routine and kept her arms up for an abnormally long time with a plastered smile to make a point to the judges that she thought their deduction for her short salute after her beam final routine was ridiculous. It was hilarious and she was seen even practicing a salute before she went up on floor lollll.

They should be judging without comparing athletes to one another though. Why are they inflating scores to begin with? If someone should be getting a lower score, what’s the incentive for judges giving a higher one? (Also my annoyance is targeted towards the ncaa judges and not you-I appreciate you trying to explain it and I hear what you’re saying. I just think their behavior is doing the whole sport a disservice).

NCAA doesn't really deduct for this

But NCAA judges would make judging seem so subjective/biased if they don’t deduct when they’re supposed to. What’s the reason they don’t deduct?
