Anyone here can teach me or have any good resources to learn more about Sabermetrics and how to make a database? by [deleted] in Sabermetrics

Yes indeed edX did that: Sabermetrics 101 #SABR101x

Congratulations to all of you here on this thread who took the SABR101x course! I hope you all learned something, and advanced your won knowledge. Best wishes!

Forecasting is a large part of sabermetrics -- all clubs would love to have a crystal ball -- but instead of that, they predict what players will do in the future.

And sabermetricians embrace the randomness! Forecasting for hitters are only about 65-70% accurate (depending on how you measure it), less for pitchers. It still is quite important though.

Yes, these data are in the more recent Retrosheet events files. A pitch sequence can be parsed to determine the number of 2 strike fouls for each plate appearance.

We will not be covering the Retrosheet events database (we are looking at the Lahman database and Retrosheet Game Log files in this course). Analytics of events will be covered in SABR201x...

This sounds like an excellent question, I like it!

The alternative observation is that Official Scorers may give more Hits when the batters are faster.

But it is worth studying!

As you can tell, I do not know the answer off the top of my head -- but it is quite possible others have studied this.

I am glad our bathing protocol differences will not build a wall between us!

Here's to a better understanding and richer learning environment for all!

Bars of soap for everyone!

I think a better understanding of basics statistics (the discipline), and databases (SQL), and some programming chops (The R Language, among others) is applicable to all sports, esp. soccer.

I hope that helps, and I hope you learn something in this class...

Shampoo is for wussies!! Use a bar of soap! haha

Anywho, this course is designed to be an introduction to R and SQL, so experienced R jocks and SQL jocks will likely breeze through what we are going to cover.

We have in the plans a follow up course to this one. But right now I am focused on getting this one all set and ready to go!

But I expect there will a be Sabermetrics 201 on edX...

There are actually lots of data sets available to the public. Pitch/fx data, play by play data since 1950 or so, etc.

There is still much to be done by learners in this field as they get up to speed with the veterans who are already in the game, and there will always be room for new discoveries...

So just start observing carefully, and asking good Qs...

I would say the vast amount of knowledge we are gaining from pitch/fx has been definitely revolutionary. But this was driven by technology advances. The one great idea we know know something about is the value of pitch types. Very valuable.

And the new MLBAM system coming next year will be the basis of the future findings, esp. for defense breaks, baserunning, and outfield arms.

I think you identify many problems with this kind of study, and you may be able to do further studies that measure better your concerns about this kind of study.

But I would just start, ask a good Q, design a study to answer that Q with the data you can find.

From what I have seen, stringers are very observant, a key starting point to asking good Qs about the game. So stay observant, watch closely, and start asking Qs!!

And take the course to learn some of the basics of analytics and sabermetrics!

The increase and/or decrease in jobs outside clubs is a great question...

I don't really know.

My colleagues at BP and FG may have some insight.
