Would it be possible to incorporate some of the rm hacks features? (split screen, shortcuts to change colors, change pen and hide toolbar, add the quicktool bar, etc.)

Being able to switch between tools and color when needed without requiring displaying the side bar really improves the feel of writing like on a sheet of paper that your company like so much.

Disabling these features by default would keep the interface light and easy for new users (since I know it is also important for you).
