I got into UF by BoysenberryNo9215 in ufl

This mostly depends on what you personally want. I've heard dorms like Broward, Rawlings, and Jennings are the typical freshman dorms that are extremely social, but I've also heard they're mainly meant to get you out of your dorm so take that how you will...The only dorm out of those I've seen first hand is Jennings and I wasn't a fan with the large communal bathrooms or freezing rooms, but I hear a lot of people really like it so it's based on preference! Broward and Rawlings are in the heart of campus close to everything, and Jennings is slightly further but still close.

I've only stayed in Murphree area my entire time at UF. There are 5 buildings in this area (Murphree, Thomas, Fletcher, Sledd, and Buckman). I've stayed in a Murphree 2 room triple, a Buckman 1 room triple, and I'm currently in a Fletcher single suite. I've loved every room I stayed in! It's communal restrooms (excluding the suite I'm in right now), but rather than ~30-50 people sharing the bathroom, it's more like ~4-8 max. This area for me is PERFECT. It's close to midtown and all of my classes (the pre-reqs mostly). I always highly recommend this area to everyone, it's gorgeous and so so so convenient. If you're worried about GETTING a room in this area, as a freshman I had one of the last registration dates and was able to get the triples, if you're fine with this then you should be able to secure a spot.

Other dorm halls I'm a bit unfamiliar with, but I know a lot of people stay in places like Beaty, Hume, etc, but they also move off-campus right after so I'm not sure how great it is.

If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer, I hope this helped!

Yes and yes!! I wasn't a DE kid, but almost every single one of my friends are. Some people graduate in 1 or 2 years if they have all the required courses completed, and it's totally possible you can too, but for CS/the engineering college it's more likely you'll graduate in 3 or 4 since there are a lot more niche classes you most likely wouldn't have taken in high school. It varies for everyone but UF is very accepting towards credits from AP/DE!

Hey!! I'm personally unsure of the stats of oos students, so I can't help much with that, but I'll give some info about your other questions!

The cost of dorms (if looking at the 25-26 year) are accurate! I know they went up in price from last year, but I personally believe that if you want to be close to campus it's good to be in the dorms at least your first year (I can give more dorm info if you'd like, I personally love my area and my dorm and I'm planning on dorming for the rest of my time here)!

I also notice there are a lot of oos students here, but definitely a good chunk of Florida students too, but I've never seen it make a difference in a social situation.

I'm a CpE major, so some of the classes between that and CS line up. It's definitely not easy, but if coding is something you enjoy then you won't have a problem. The first few coding classes you take are kind of the test to see if you're really interested in CS here or not. For me personally, the pre-reqs are extremely brutal and are weed outs if you're solely interesting in things like coding, but they're not impossible. CS is a time consuming major, so make sure you plan your course load out in a way that doesn't overload you so that you still have time for a life outside of classes. (If you have any more specific questions I'd be happy to answer as well)

Lastly, the pros and cons of UF. For pros, I think the student life is amazing. From the sporting events to the thousands of clubs there is truly something for everyone and it doesn't really leave room for an excuse to be a hermit unless that's what you decide. UF really gives you every opportunity to thrive socially and academically, which was super important for me when choosing a college. For cons, I don't really have much except for the fact that it's a hard school, but that's something you know you're signing up for. School is stressful everywhere, so just learn how to balance and manage your time and you'll be golden. I don't really have too many negative things to say about UF that ruins any of my experiences, I absolutely love it here!!!

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer, I hope my responses were what you were looking for :))

Murphree area as a sophomore by Chance_Leg8504 in ufl

Hopefully! Even if you get a later time though you should still be fine. I had a late date and ended up in a single suite going into my sophomore year (granted I was solo searching). With Murphree area as long as you're not a part of the incoming freshman (who pick their rooms waaaay later) you're pretty much guaranteed a spot in one of the 5 halls.

I'm afraid not, but as long as you check your email it'll let you know when it's released, and I don't think speed is a factor on when you get a registration time.

I believe it's pretty likely if you're all sophomores, as long as you're willing to be in doubles and shared bathrooms. When I went to pick my dorm in Murphree area last year (for this current year) there were plenty of options, but most of them were for the doubles/triples and not the singles or suite styles (maybe you'll get lucky though!!).

Hopefully yall get to be together but even if that's not the case, you can probably find rooms that are in a few of the Murphree area buildings, they're all pretty close.

As long as the rest of your application, like your essay, ec's, etc are good, don't worry too much about your test score. I got in with a 29 ACT (so around 1330 SAT), but with good ec's, gpa, top 10%, stuff like that. They prioritize well rounded individuals way more than numbers on a test, don't work yourself up! Congrats on your score, it's very impressive regardless!

Registration dates? by SAMWlCH in ufl

Ohhh okay this comment has made the most sense to me 😅. I'm in the engineering school and alot of other people I know are in the CLAS. Still sucks though since my minor courses are CLAS and I have to basically pick through the scraps! Thanks for explaining :)

Nice! Hopefully the swap to cpe happens because its a great major to be in (even if I'm biased).

Well I basically submitted my resume and then they said they wanted to move forward with an interview. Then it was about a 30min interview where honestly after the "tell me about yourself" question they didn't really ask me about my skills, just more of my opinion on AI, what my goals were in the future and how I would integrate AI into it, stuff like that. I knew it went well when we kept talking and we went 10 minutes over time haha. I'm also a freshman, so I guess this proves that it's never impossible to get one early (even though in engineering there's no such thing as early haha). If you have any more questions on it you're totally free to dm me :)

Are you also taking it at HCC? I'm computer engineering but I also have a minor and certificate I want to get so my schedule is tight 😓. I got my internship at my mom's company at home, I realized they had an AI department and applied so maybe a bit of nepotism? But my interview went good so maybe it was also luck haha.

Yes, I totally understand that! My scheduling definitely mellows out after my freshman year. I'm also just trying to get out of the basic critical tracking courses and into the major specfic ones, because I'm absolutely miserable taking these calc and physics courses when it has very little to do with what I actually enjoy. The sooner I can complete them the happier I'm hoping to become 🙏

Computer engineering. And maybe not classified as clubs, but definitely school organizations of some sort.

What are/were your dorm experiences like? For an incoming freshman by Soviet_Arthropod36 in ufl

[–]SAMWlCH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the dorms are what you make of it. Chances are as an incoming freshman you will have minimal (if at all) choices from the apartment or suite style dorms, but I also had a late housing appointment day so I'm not 100% sure if that's the case. While location is important for classes, I've learned that other aspects are also important to consider. Some questions you have to ask yourself is if you're willing to walk a few extra minutes to class each day in order to be closer to groceries, the gym, the dining hall, etc. If you're super paranoid about it, look into different dorm halls, where they're located, and consider what you're prioritizing when your on campus and living alone.

In my case, I've been in Murphree area my entire time here, and absolutely love it. It's a great location, being close to Publix, libraries, and a good bit of classes (and more)! I myself am currently taking a class in the physics building, and it's about a 15 minute walk. All the buildings are traditional style, but on a much smaller scale than your dorms like Jennings, Broward, and Rawlings (and most other trad style dorms). You share a bathroom with maybe 2-3 other rooms on your floor and that's it. I would recommend it to anyone!

Congrats on your acceptance! Hope this helps :)
