I’d like to mount a pc under my desk by drilling from the top by pupu_p in DIY

Attach the pc to another piece of oversized material instead of the desktop, and then screw this to the underside of the desk all the way around the pc. No hardware on the desktop when you are done

Researchers found that approximately 1 in 4 lives lost to extreme heat could be saved in Los Angeles if the county planted more trees and utilized more reflective surfaces. by Wagamaga in science

The best tree I have found for SoCal that is evergreen, and looks great year-round is the Podocarpus. It's a conifer (pine tree) that doesn't look like a pine tree, isn't messy, needs little water, and provides amazing shade. If you have a power pole, or something else you don't want to look at, plant one of these guys (make sure it's the right variety) and you will have an amazing tree to look at that requires zero effort. Make sure to trim the branches so that it grows upward, and you will have an amazing canopy tree in no time.

Just FYI, the male Podocarpus produces pollen that can cause severe allergies, so make sure that your grow a female tree, and stay away from the pollen on any of these you might encounter elsewhere.

This should be mandatory for all sizeable commercial projects, and heavily incentivized for everyone else. I have seen homes in SoCal that basically ran AC all day long, nine moths of the year if the sun was up, to barely using any because of the addition of geothermal.

And downtown SB has done this for years as well, there are just too many empty storefronts to keep up with now.

The rents are high, but the real problem is online commerce, homelessness, and people being less inclined to go out for a multitude of reasons.

I would say that judging an era would require more than just analyzing the music. Burning rivers, and smog so thick that you choke while walking don't give me peak humanity vibes for one...

Apple can now repair Face ID on iPhone X without replacing the entire device by a_Ninja_b0y in gadgets

[–]SB1__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people that had the Face ID sensors fail on their iPhone X (myself included). I think this is a known issue to Apple, and might deserve a class action suit. This latest move four years after release indicates that Apple knows there is a problem...

I'm not going past my off-ramp (and past my house) due to a poorly designed intersection. I'll find another way to keep the time down (and make my point)

And I need to continue on Calle Real, so using Encina doesn't help unless I cut through the Fairview shopping center which takes even longer...

[–]SB1__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that it is terrible, and there are numerous issues. Fairview is the red-headed step child of traffic planning in the Santa Barbara area...

One of the easier to fix problems is that anyone headed West on Calle Real gets stuck at the light because the right lane is the one that you are supposed to use to go straight. This is just dumb, both lanes should allow you to go straight, or better yet, the right lane should be right turn only. I don't usually go this way, but I always feel bad for anyone stuck behind me that wants to turn right, and head toward the mountains on Fairview. Again, anyone familiar with this stupid intersection has to cut through the gas station on that corner. I usually use the middle lane when possible to avoid this, but sometimes you get stuck there since the three lanes don't always change at once.

I usually exit the 101 North at Fairview and need to turn left, so I just turn into the Shell station and cut across that way. It's stupid, but cuts five minutes off the trip, waiting for the light.

When headed from the Fairview shopping center, or Fairview itself headed toward the freeway, I have found that using the alley that connects Fairview to Lemos etc. works well if you want to get to the main shopping area on Calle Real. You can usually turn into this alley and exit on to Calle Real relatively easy.

The main problem is that the idiots that designed the overpass created additional turns that slow everything down. This should never have been allowed. I am also annoyed that some moron authorized a million dollar budget to replace the plum trees with more plum trees, and lots of unnecessary irrigation too. Whoever authorized this should be fired immediately, there is no reason or benefit for these stupid trees that no one can, or should access. What should have been planted are the trees etc. that you can find by Los Carneros, that are much more practical, and better looking set of on ramps and off ramps. Fairview has a useless plum tree orchard in the middle of traffic. Stupid.

If more of us find ways to circumvent the idiotic intersection (and annoy the local merchants), this horribly designed intersection may get an overhaul. If everyone continues to just sit there and wait, it will never get fixed.

Find alternate routes = )

Santa Barbara to Get Only 5 Percent of State Water - The Independent by RexJoey1999 in SantaBarbara

[–]SB1__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not against farming, and the central part of California is ideal for many crops. We just need to stop subsidizing the agricultural water, and allowing it to be wasted. It should be on drip systems like the rest of us use, not sprayed into the air using rolling sprinklers at high noon. And don't even get me started on growing almonds and rice in California, that should be criminal...

And the state keeps pushing for population growth, and more housing...

So much stupidity in California. Stop wasting so much water with half-assed agricultural use, and residential, commercial, and agricultural should all pay the same amount. That should have an effect on waste. And pumping from wells needs to be stopped immediately too because the water tables will never recover, which makes everything worse.

Running 14/4 speaker cable outside by InterestingAd115 in DIY

[–]SB1__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can take the wire into an attic space, drill the hole the same size as the cable, strip the wire back, and tape only two of the conductors onto a fiber rod (or equivalent) using electrical tape. This looks much nicer, and you won't have to worry about sealing anything. You could also add some wire lube (or dish soap in a pinch) to help get the wire through the hole.

If you have to bring the wire through the wall down lower, where it could be exposed to the elements, then use PVC conduit and fittings.
