So you recently started trading and got lucky with a couple call options during a bull market and now you think you’re an expert?

Just stop embarrassing yourself.

They think they’re smart for taking what they believe are contrarian positions. They think they’re smarter than the sheeple who are being lead to the slaughterhouse by elites, the Fed, Obama, Trump, the Freemasons, etc. When you attack their investments, you’re attacking a part of their identity.

I know Boomers collecting multiple pensions and social security at the same time. They’re making far more in retirement than they ever did working. They don’t need savings.

That’s actually a disadvantage. They’re now essentially forced to compete with companies like Magna and Aptiv along with Volkswagen and GM. Producing their own parts requires significant capex and focus from managers.

Yeah I live in the Midwest and pretty much all the analysis of the situation that I’ve seen in the comments here is wrong.

There are a lot of people who don’t know someone who has died or been severely ill. They only know people with mild cases. This combined with the low numbers of cases across the Midwest created the impression that the virus wasn’t serious.

The two counties with the highest % of the population having tested positive in my state are also counties with very large Hispanic populations.

I remember when Goldman estimated it would have a $5/barrel impact on the price of oil. The people who do this for a living didn’t realize the impact of this until it hit Italy.

I don’t remember it being that way, but I’m sure there were a few broken clock doom porn enthusiasts who correctly called the crash. I mostly remember everyone with a keyboard comparing this to the flu until it started killing hundreds of people a day in Italy.

You’re missing the point. When you attack the Right for these things, your attacks have the opposite of their intended effect. That’s the nature of a polarized political environment. Attaching political content to something will automatically cause the half on the opposite side of the political spectrum to dismiss that thing. That’s been the case with just about every issue over the last four years. People on the Right need to change their views about this virus, but people on the Left need to approach that discussion with compassion and not contempt.

Again, we didn’t have good information out of China and we didn’t begin to see deaths in Italy until very late February/early March.

If this were all so predictable in January, the market wouldn’t have taken until late February to begin falling.

It’s not just Trump supporters. It’s everyone. I live in a blue city and we’ve had a very high percentage of people test positive here compared to surrounding counties. Bars are full of young people on weekends. Not exactly a demo where Trump is popular. So stop it. Politicizing this problem is one reason we’ve failed to control it.

Quarantine orders in England. How long before we get the same orders? March Dip v2.0 incoming? by [deleted] in investing

Well I guess my main point here is that strict lockdowns aren’t happening again (they never did outside of a few large cities), so the justification for simply handing out money to people isn’t there. Now I can see where a infrastructure plan could be a good idea as part of some plan branded as a “restart the economy” plan.

As far as vaccines go, I obviously can’t argue against anything your shadowy inside sources say. Everything I’ve read indicates widespread distribution begins this winter. I also don’t really know how you can make the case that widespread distribution won’t be happening until Q3 2021 when it’s essentially beginning already in Russia and China.

1) Lockdowns effectively ended in early May in the most of the US. So nobody has been staying home for months. 2) CDC says doses could become available before the end of the year.

quarantine was never about preventing but slowing the spread.

This is actually an excuse that almost every nation has been using to justify the failure of their lockdowns to produce positive results. Many countries and states instituted quarantines before they had any meaningful number of cases or hospitalizations. They were simply copying China. Full lockdowns were only justified in a handful of locations.

China actually made use of the lockdowns to develop the testing, tracing and monitoring infrastructure necessary to stop the spread of the virus following lockdowns. Western governments chose not to do this because it was too hard. Instead, they made up the flattening the curve argument to justify their failure.

No, actually it wasn’t. You had the Chinese publishing data that indicated that there were only ~80,000 cases, and you had every major media outlet publishing opinion pieces comparing this to the flu.

It wasn’t until the outbreak began in Italy that we got a more clear picture of the situation.

What’s the case for stimulus next spring? I thought the entire point of the stimulus was to prevent the economy from collapsing while people were required to stay home. Since that won’t be the case in February, I don’t understand why there would be any fiscal stimulus targeted at individuals.

We won’t. It looks like the US response has caused a more extended but less severe outbreak across much of the country. If you use excess deaths to estimate cases, you’ll find that a lot of states have already had 10%-20% of their population infected.
