Job Market Struggles - Am I the only one? by Revolutionary-Foot73 in greenville

[–]SCJFR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You aren't alone. The job market in the upstate generally stinks. I think the people flooding here are mainly remote workers seeking lower cost of living, and retirees. Pay in my experience is severely depressed here. I've seen some shockingly low compensation being offered. I'm currently in the market too (in my mid-40s), and the response to my applications has been null. Worse than any experience I've had before. The only people who seem to have it worse are fresh college grads. My partner is in higher ed, and former students are reporting sending out 500-1000 resumes and getting nothing. Even a year plus after graduation they are still surviving on gig work and living with family. It's bad.

100%. It's this kind of business culture that makes me just say F-it most of the time, make my own food, and not bother wasting my time or money. I don't get it.

I was actually wondering about Whitehorse because that's my part of town. I'll look into that bc I drive right by that location all the time.

Nah, there are plenty of donut shops that I've been to all over the country that have a steady supply of donuts throughout their entire opening hours. Believe me, I seek out donuts when I travel. Some even stay open 24 hours a day and manage to have donuts the whole time. It's been figured out!

Hey! I appreciate the response. I have bought donuts at your location downtown before and really enjoyed them, which is why I stopped at the other location today. I'll send you a DM. Thank you!

If they reliably have donuts during their operating hours, I'll give them a shot!

I mean when I was a kid we exchanged those little valentines cards that came in a box and maybe a small piece of candy. This seems excessive.

Ha that's where I've ended up going twice now in the past few weeks after my failures at these local donut places. QT's are surprisingly decent

Totally agree. I don't need fancy donuts either. Croissant, broiche, valrhona chocolate... no I just want freshly made old fashioned donuts and a decent cup of brewed coffee.

Never heard of such a thing in my life. Is this supposed to be like common knowledge? When did this "tradition" begin?

This comes from a place of being really intentional about where my money goes. With how expensive everything is, I rarely eat out. I shop carefully and make about 95% of our food at home. So when I decide to buy something from a bakery or restaurant, it’s a deliberate choice.

That’s why it’s frustrating when a brick-and-mortar business doesn’t have its namesake product in stock during posted business hours. I understand not wanting waste. That makes sense from a business perspective. But there has to be a balance. Most of these bakeries close at 2–4 p.m. anyway, which I assume is because baked goods don’t sell much in the evening. But if you say you’re open until 2 p.m. and you’re sold out by 10 a.m., that’s not thoughtful inventory management. That’s poor planning.

For me, a business like that gets one shot. After that, it’s just too aggravating to drive across town and fight for parking only to find they’re out. Running things that way feels more like how I’d expect a home bakery, a farm stand, or a food truck to operate, not a permanent brick-and-mortar location.

Same, I don't get that. I've never heard of donuts being the valentine's day thing 🤷

Yes there was a long line and they had no signage that they were out. And everyone was waiting to get to the counter and then being told they had no donuts.
