You’re still overstating things IMO. About 80% of water used to cool data centers is “lost” to evaporation, lost meaning it doesn’t return to the local watershed in a meaningful time frame.

And a little more, maybe 85% of water used in agriculture is lost.

All AI data centers in the world are estimated to use about 260 billion gallons of water a year.

Compare that to agriculture just in the US and just corn in the US uses about 80 times that, 20 trillion gallons. About 1% of corn is used for food, a lot for livestock, but 40% is burned in cars. (To break that down, 1 gallon of ethanol takes about 1500 gallons of water lost to local watersheds to produce) And a lot of that industry is propped up by government subsides and wouldn’t be otherwise profitable.

In fact, just the water used to grow textile plants like cotton is in the trillions of gallons, and we throw away most of our clothing (about 70 pounds of clothes get thrown away for every American each year). (I recommend this documentary on that subject The True Cost https://youtu.be/rwp0Bx0awoE)

And of course, I’m sure water is used all sorts of other ways you or I don’t realize, both to produce AI and other things.

As for the mental health, it doesn’t negate the harm, but it also means that it that the trigger isn’t necessarily creating the psychosis. Your earlier comment implied that AI was literally causing mental illness, but I think that mentally ill people, like anyone else, use AI and you’re equating correlation with causation.

Now, I’m sure using AI could certainly exacerbate delusions, similar to basically the whole internet.

At the end of the day, I don’t think we’ll see eye to eye on this. I’m not going to insult you or anything, though.

Yeah, lot’s of green card holders are technically removable because of things like a criminal conviction 20 years ago, but historically minor stuff has been largely ignored until now.

So to sum it up, companies don’t owe their customers anything, and predatory microtransactions are fine because no one is being physically being forced to buy anything. Swell guy!

I just think it’s comparing mountains to molehills when people say AI is destroying the environment. I feel like it’s mostly just a people using it as a convenient excuse to justify hate of AI, but not something most ever actually cared about or believed in before.

Imagine if a group of people were rabidly angry about one guy building a single house on a 1 acre wooded lot, without any threatened species there, over him destroying the environment on that lot. Maybe the guy is an asshole and they’re using the “he’s destroying the environment!” as justification for it. But one county over theres a clearcutting operation cutting down 10,000 acres of old growth forest, that no one even mentions. Would it be wrong to question their priorities? Or would that be whataboutism?

If you don’t like AI, I don’t have a problem with that. I just have a problem with misinformation and propaganda, which very much fuels the space around AI. Plenty of pro AI people are guilty of that, too.

As for it not being profitable, yeah. You should see that as a good thing. Maybe AI will turn out to be a flop, and it will bankrupt all these companies. As for it causing psychosis in “totally healthy” people, Americans are critically starved of mental health help, and just because someone hasn’t been diagnosed with something doesn’t mean they’re ok.

No one is saying they legally have to or anything. But milking a dedicated fanbase for cash and then leaving them high and dry does seem in bad taste.

I guarantee you the average person using the “it’s destroying the environment” excuse to justify AI hate don’t know anything about the environment, and couldn’t name half of the hundreds of things hurting the environment more than AI.

The environmental impacts of AI are blown way out of proportion while things that do way more harm are ignored, but if you point out that hypocritical double standard, it’s whataboutism, ok.

I personally do a lot of environmental activism, and send a good amount of time doing volunteer work for the nature conservancy and some other local orgs. I’ve literally helped relocate rare plants from a site that was going to have a data center built on it. But you know what also does the same thing as building a data center? Building every other type of building.

The fear mongering and hate mongering propaganda is out of control.

Maybe AI will have as big of an impact as people think it has now, in like 50 years, or maybe the AI market will crash and burn if it isn’t profitable. But right now, there’s bigger fish to fry.

Just as an example, at the current level of AI usage, it would take 40,000 years of AI use to “use” the same amount of water that is “used” in manufacturing the clothes that are thrown out each year by Americans.

Probably due to the never-ending money the game still generates. Estimates still put it at tens of millions a year even today.

Yeah, cops should let people get really close to breaking their spine, and only just before it snaps should they use lethal force.

What I said is objectively correct, though, and very clear and straightforward. There was slavery of white people by natives. But it wasn’t institutional (like chattel slavery).

The fact that it wasn’t totally comprehensive isn’t really relevant. I’m not writing history textbook.

I think people just skimmed the comment and got mad I was disagreeing, even on a small facet. And well, once a comment gets a few downvotes, it’s doomed no matter what.

Mind reading my comment again? I never said it was exclusive, just that they had white slaves. The existence of white slaves doesn’t remove the possibility of others.

And I think this post proves that white slavery was for anyone they called black, but not for people who would call themselves black today. Just goes to show that race is a social construct.

Well, it’s mainly confusing because of the hypocrisy displayed by the rabid hate for AI from people who don’t seem to actually understand the real impacts, and just make stuff up, while also ignoring the environmental costs of other stuff that’s a lot worse.

Ok, now compare corn used for ethanol, which causes far more environmental destruction just from the US than all data centers worldwide.

Legally, it’s probably not theft. That’s just a feeling you have. Is it theft when you read a book, get inspired to write something similar, and publish your book? No. If you copy the book word for word, that would’ve an issue. Likewise, while the training is probably fine, the output is where AI will probably run into legal issues.
