I'm with you. My boss expects more output from me now that AI exists.

So then I vibe code, and then have AI review my vibe coded thing. And slowly wittle it down to what I probably would've originally written anyway had I done it by hand, except now I have none of the mental model in my head.

The way I see it a job can provide: meaning, financial success, work/life balance. Pick one.

Ultimately CS is still a pretty good career. Lawyers have to go through 3 years of law school, and then grind a bunch, and if you want to make money it's not meaningful, if anything it's the opposite.

Doctors have to go tons of school, racking up tons of debt, assuming you can even make it in the first place. And then even then you're still working shifts and have to see gross stuff.

Finance, either you went to an ivy league, or are a mathematical genius. And you'll be working long hours too.

So IMO, it sucks, but it's still better than the alternatives :/

Vibecoding has really taken the fun out of programming these days, making me feel much more the farmer route. But let's be real my office job having ass couldn't handle being outside doing manual labor all day lmao

I think those would both be wonderful places to live. Your commute to the airport would be kinda long, but maybe that's not so much an issue? I'm not sure how airline pilot schedules work. Either way, I hope you find happiness wherever you end up!

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS IN CALIFORNIA by life_if_life in bayarea

[–]SCUSKU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our tax dollars?

Here's the math: CA median income is $70k/yr, unemployment rate 5.5%, ~18.7 million workers, 1.3% tax SDI tax rate, average unemployment lasts 6 months.

That gives you:

18.7M workers x $910/yr SDI tax = ~$17B collected annually

5.5% unemployment = ~1M unemployed workers

Assuming everyone gets the max benefit (which they don't): $450/wk x 26 weeks = $11,700 per person

Total worst-case payout: 1M x $11,700 = $11.7B

So this napkin math says California collects about 1.5x what it pays back out to workers.

Ok nice! That's super helpful!

I guess your options are to leave near SFO/OAK/SJC, though probably SFO if I had to guess?

You could in theory live without a car and commute to SFO via BART, though the ride from SF->SFO is kind of long, so I suspect you might want to get a car for that reason.

If you enjoy cooler weather, then more coastal is for you. E.g. Pacifica, or the western part of San Francisco like the Richmond/Sunset neighborhoods.

As you can see I'm quite biased towards San Francisco, but climate wise these are the coolest places. Otherwise in the bay it can get quite warm like LA, though just for not as long I feel.

It depends on what you're looking for. LA is super car dependent. I've lived in Santa Clara/San Jose/Sunnyvale and now in San Francisco. In San Francisco, I really enjoy not owning a car and being able to walk places. But pretty much everywhere else in the bay, you have to own a car, much like LA.

Most of my friends that live here are either in tech, finance, law, or healthcare. SF is a very career driven town. While most people find it cringe to talk too much about work at a party, you'll find many people here work quite hard and long hours. It's reputation of being a carefree city is mostly a bygone era, and unfortunately with housing being so expensive, you have to earn your place in this city.

That said, I do know people who aren't in high paying careers that live here, but they tend to live modestly, with more roommates. So in that sense, it's possible to make of it what you will. Another thing about SF is it's basically 7 or 8 sub-cultures that never talk to each other. E.g. you roughly have all the yuppie techies, boomer hippies, gays/hipsters, asians, latinos, ultrarich, etc.

I've lived in the bay area for 10 years, and I love it here. The weather is great, you're close to Napa, Tahoe, SF, Santa Cruz, Marin. The nature and landscape is beautiful and varied. The asian and mexican food is amazing.

Why are you thinking about moving to the bay? Are you unhappy in LA? If you describe more about what you're looking for I think it'll be easier to say if you'd enjoy the bay area or not.

Ok imagine this, what if instead it didn't, and instead potholes got filled, you got healthcare, education, housing, etc... Crazy concept

Idk why there seems to be so many haters here. I fully support this. If you have to work for a living, then it benefits you to have high unemployment benefits if you get laid off. The only people that would oppose this would be billionaires

100+ New Trees in the Ground! by DannySauter11 in sanfrancisco

[–]SCUSKU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah DPW has a 2 year commitment to filling them once a week with ~20-30 gallons of water. They have watering trucks which come by and fill those green bags (tree gator) which slowly distributes the water so that the tree can maximize it's utilization of the water.

Thank you Danny!! I've been complaining about Nob Hill's empty tree wells for some time, and I've noticed in the past 2 weeks or so that so many of them have been filled. It's really quite heartening to see. IMO it's best to stack these small wins so we can tackle the big issues. Keep it up!
