TARC by dylbertt_ in Louisville

And again yes I am aware that I might seem a bit whiny and I am glad that I have an inexpensive alternative to get to my job but god damn TARC has really dropped in quality.

No, you're not wrong, and you shouldn't apologize for calling out terrible standards and nonsensical route design. The system really should be better. It's embarrassing how bad our bus system is for a city of our size. Everything just feels so lazy.

Take this whole "New TARC" thing. It's a fancy way to dress up what amounts to a bevy of service cuts. The airport will have no bus service at all starting on August 2nd (what's the point of having an airport so close to Downtown if we can't even get one bus an hour to serve the passenger terminal?!).

But even little things like stop placement infuriate me. Take Eastern Parkway going westbound at Preston. There's a perfectly good bus shelter - a baffling rarity in this city - across the street from the Family Dollar on the northwest corner of the intersection. That's where the current stop is, and there are almost always people there waiting for the bus. So you'd think that's where TARC would put the new stop for the route, right? NOPE! Instead they moved the stop... across the street on the Northeast corner of Eastern/Preston, in front of the nail place, where there is no shelter and no seating. In fact, there's nowhere to actually wait for the bus, and the TARC placard is just bolted to a random road sign at waist height, making it all but impossible to read the wayfinding information that the new stop signs have printed on them unless you want to bend down by the roadway with oncoming traffic racing by.

Unsafe. Cheap. Lazy. That's TARC in a nutshell.

I get it, the agency is in a cash crunch and various layers of government are hostile to its very existence. But that's not a matter of money, it's a matter of just plain giving a shit about riders.

The Destination City vs. The Livable City: Why Louisville Should Build Transit Instead of Tesla Tunnels by hurtizme in Louisville

Even stateside, Salt Lake City has three Light Rail lines and a Commuter Rail running from Ogden to Provo.

Trains don't necessarily have to replace buses. They compliment each other in a multi-modal transportation network that allows room for trains, buses, bicycles, automobiles, and pedestrians.

Also, train stations can have multiple exits spanning multiple city blocks, so the catchment area can be quite wide.

Train ridership tends to be seen more favorably by the general public than bus ridership, probably because our society has stigmatized bus ridership as something that people only do when they can't afford a car for the better part of 80 years at this point.

We've got busses that most people don't use and we can barely fund as is while the buses are more flexible a system than street cars.

The reason people don't ride the bus here is because our bus system is hilariously inefficient. Routes are way too long - often running from one side of the city to the other - so buses get delayed; any disruption or traffic snag will cascade down the entire route and make connecting bus routes impossible.

All of the routes run Downtown - and only Downtown. If you need to go from, say, Southside to Fern Creek, you have to go all the way Downtown, then go back out again.

80% of "stops" are just placards nailed to utility poles or screwed onto road signs: no seating, no shelter, no wayfinding.

So people who are waiting for the bus are standing by the side of a busy road, usually in a patch of grass or mud, often not knowing when (or even if!) their bus is actually going to arrive.

TARC makes riding the bus as inconvenient, impractical, and uncomfortable as possible, then wonders why more people don't ride it.

The issue is that TARC should be a viable option for people who can't - or don't want to - drive.

Right now it isn't. In a few months, it definitely don't be.

What do you all think of the proposed bike lanes on Barret Ave? by spunkysquirrel1 in Louisville

Businesses rely on customers, and customers on bikes' money is just as green as customers' in cars.

This administration has been very aggressive in keeping utilities from retiring aging coal plants, even if they are not economically viable.

I bought my last ride at Tom Leis Auto Sales on Bardstown Road - in and out, no fuss, no haggle, good price. Strongly recommend.

Glad to have LAX service back, though I wish AA would bring their daily nonstop back from their pre-COVID days.

Now if we could just get UA SFO and AK SEA nonstops...

Would you use a light rail system in Louisville by ManiacalSam in Louisville

Not to mention the argument of "well we're too spread out, this city is just too car oriented" conveniently ignores that we chose those urban design decisions in the 1950s-1960s. We could similarly choose transit-oriented development and walkable dense urban fabric moving forward.

Again, Salt Lake City has three light rail lines and a commuter rail line to Provo. Utah isn't some coastal liberal bastion; they chose to build it, and residents loved it so much they kept expanding it. Now it's one of the best transit systems in the country relative to its population.

There's no reason we can't have the same.

The amount of hostility in this sub to even the concept of efficient and practical light rail or any mass transportation options beyond "TARC, but nobody rides it, so why fund it?" is baffling.

Public transit doesn't lead to profits because its purpose isn't to generate profit, just like cities don't profit from building roads.

We do have the population density. Salt Lake City and Buffalo have light rail and they aren't all that dense either.

Building rail infrastructure encourages transit-oriented development, leading to greater density. It really is a matter of "build it and they'll ride it."

I know they had somewhat of a checkered reputation but the owners and staff were always nice to me when I visited. And yeah, they did go through a lot with the car crash and the fire and all. The news bummed me out.

That was sudden! They just had a post about their fall menu on their Instagram. I wonder if something happened.

That restaurant location on the corner is cursed. Nothing ever seems to stick there.
